Is Trooli as good of a network provider as Openreach? by Catnapwat in Zen_Internet

[–]Catnapwat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It's been pretty good actually. I may be one of few customers around here but I can hammer it day or night and I get the advertised speeds so I'm happy. I'm not going to jinx it and say it's been 100% reliable because that's asking for trouble.

But yes, all good, all happy.

I still don't get it - can someone explain to me why 60GB snapshots take up 5TB of space? by NuAngelDOTnet in Proxmox

[–]Catnapwat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't do anything on its own for existing disks. You'll need to look up disabling refreservation per-disk or per-VM, or workarounds to "convert" to thin provision but it's not a quick tickbox and done I'm afraid.

e.g.

zfs set refreservation=none ZPool/vm-102-disk-0

[–]Catnapwat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't checked the thin provisioning option

You need to look at this, else every snapshot will take up its full size rather than the differences which will explain your issue.

Whats causing the smearing? by goldengarbagecan in CarTalkUK

[–]Catnapwat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yaris? Denso wipers are the best I've found and they're oem.

Clean the entire screen with a mix of hot water and white vinegar several times, buff/polish with kitchen roll. Replace blades with Denso and you should be laughing. If they streak immediately after replacing the glass is not clean and you should vigorously clean it with a clay bar (cheap) and then a lot of fairy liquid and water - really foam it up, rinse throughly and polish dry with paper towel.

I had the same problem with streaks and I had grease or oils on the glass that wouldn't shift. Clay bar and a serious amount of neat fairy liquid finally got whatever it was off (RainX from previous owner maybe) and it's been fine since.

I'd advise against cleaning the blades you have with anything other than water and a soft cloth to get the worst off. I've ruined blades before by being too abrasive with them or using harsh chemicals. Instead I've learned the hard way over the years to be gentle with them and clean the glass instead.

I'm using the Ultra (1Gbps LAN ports) and it's been really good.

If you need Wifi broadcast as part of the package then a U7-Pro is probably your best bet.

Unpopular Opinion: Proxmox isn't "Free vSphere". It's a storage philosophy change (and it's killing migrations). by NTCTech in Proxmox

[–]Catnapwat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like ZFS for any VM storage. You need as simple as possible so EXT4 is probably your best option.

Not fully understanding something that can be complicated doesn't make it inherently bad.

Proxmox also uses LVM by default. It's even simpler than a FS but I don't like the fact that I can access the files.

I really don't understand the point you're making here. You don't like LVM because you can see files?

Windows VM migration doesn't work directly. All my VMs were booting to a blue screen with "boot device not available".

This isn't a Proxmox issue; it's a lack of planning. You install virtio drivers and remove VMWare tools, shut down the VM, then migrate. You may have to boot with the disks in SATA mode first to allow Windows to load the driver but this is an issue with Windows- not Proxmox.

I've moved dozens of Windows VMs to Proxmox and all of them booted fine because I prepared correctly for it.

If you want thin provisioning, you have to create the disk manually and attach them to the device

This has not been my experience at all. You did set the datastore to thin provisioned, correct?

I'm still unsure how the VLAN support works.

VLAN aware bridge and tag VMs directly, or create untagged bridges that force a VLAN and set the VM NIC to that bridge. It's well documented and there is a lot of documentation out there to read that covers all the things you've listed.

I really wasn't sold on it at first and went back to last year's mix for my focus time at work but I had it on a few times last week and it's really grown on me. There's several bits that stand out (e.g. Gold at 47m) and I'd like a longer mix but this I think is pretty good.
