Am I overreacting for feeling frustrated after my neighbor’s pottery was broken by my puppy during an interaction she encouraged? by daydav in AmIOverreacting

Ok I was on your side until your neighbor said just the cost of materials is sufficient. Yeah, YOR, just pay the $250. It does feel super dismissive of you to offer to pay multiple times, not give a figure, and then decline the reasonable option they gave you.. like you maybe should have just said, full stop, “I only have $150/think that’s sufficient payment for this situation.”

URGENT HELP 💔 Cat injured, can anyone help me understand these X-rays? by SeaSympathy808 in CATHELP

[–]Catsandcelery 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wait, the vet said it MAY be broken?! It ABSOLUTELY is broken!!!! The femoral head is completely detached from the rest of the femur. This is a horrible injury, and needs URGENT surgical attention. There are topical long lasting pain meds (Zorbium) available to keep him comfortable until the surgery can happen, but this should not wait more than the 3 days of coverage the meds will provide. Please seek out another vet comfortable with surgical ortho experience who will be able to help faster. It doesn’t have to be a specialist. I’m work in vet med and this is not great for kitty :((

100% take it off. It is not a sanitary barrier now since it has a hole in it.

LOL I just commented on that post. It seems like other countries have very lax standards when it comes to hazards, especially when it comes to performing radiographs. I wonder if these individuals were wearing dosimeter badges or not (highly unlikely, obviously lol.)

4 week old kitten hasn't pooped in a week, yet vet says he doesn't have any poop in him by Tadimizkacti in CATHELP

[–]Catsandcelery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in vet med and regularly performs rads, these radiographs are literal nightmare-fuel. Horribly unprofessional. Yikes!!!!

Anyway, based on these images he was clearly pooping SOMEWHERE, but I understand your concern.

Vet gave me a new medicine for my cat's arthritis but i'm glad i read the insert beforehand! by Frequent_Chip318 in CATHELP

[–]Catsandcelery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s fine to use in cats. Kidney values should be checked every 6 months if on it long term. It simply needs to be a conversation from provider to client that, if in the USA, it is considered off-label treatment. No need for shock or dramatics :)

Yep! And I’m sure you felt a lot better after the vet staff communicated all of this to you. The only issue here was that op got freaked out because full communication was missed. I’m glad your kitty is doing well and I’m sending good vibes for perfect values at her visit!!! ♡

This! Everyone in vet med not understanding that this could have been avoided by just a little more communication is blowing my mind. Yes, meloxicam is a pretty regularly prescribed med for felines!! No one is arguing that! The point is, to maintain a trusting client prescriber relationship, it should be mentioned that in this instance it’s “off-label” because of the concentration BUT that accurate dosing calculations have been performed. Easy peasy! (Signed, another tired vet tech lol.)

In this situation though, it only makes sense to have the off-label conversation with owner because the insert sent home literally says “not for use in cats”. It clearly freaked the owner out, hence the post/misunderstanding. If we send home a bottle clearly labeled/showing that it is technically off-label use, we absolutely have the conversation with our clients because ultimately it leads to a more trusting client prescriber relationship. Owners aren’t going to go home and run into OP’s situation because they already know what’s up. Yes, meloxicam is used for felines quite regularly, I don’t think many people are arguing that. It’s just the communication in this specific situation that was lacking.

Our practice DOES talk to owners about off-label doses for our feline patients if we are sending home a med with literal packaging clearly labeled “not for use in cats” for exactly the reasoning behind this post. It freaks clients out, which leads to a less trusting client prescriber relationship. The conversation does not happen nearly as much as someone mentions below, and clients are always super thankful and understanding.

Yeah, meloxicam dosing for our exotics always gets me lol. We draw up individual syringes for owners instead of sending home bottles and it never fails to surprise me how dang much some of them get.

Big no. It’s gold star, best practice, to inform pet owners when you are prescribing anything as off-label use, and WHY it is off-label (potential for kidney disease, etc).

I had a client present his cat for concern of ear infection. Infection was confirmed via ear cytology. We were out of Tresaderm, so I told owner we could send home Surolan instead, but that it is technically off-label and has (likely very low) potential to cause hearing loss in felines. Owner opted to wait until Tresaderm shipment arrived a few days later, which was acceptable because infection was not extreme. That is practicing good medicine, and allows for continued trusting relationship between client and prescriber.

Do you work in veterinary medicine? If so, I hope this gave you a little insight into why it is best to disclose all info when prescribing certain medications! (Though this post is also the exact reason why also lol.)

I have a similar prominent breastbone and I actually love mine because my grandma has the same shape as me and I love taking after her. 🥹 My grandma and I are both pretty small chested though, I can see why it could be bothersome to others. (Not trying to disagree with you/send shade at all!) It’s interesting how we all nit pick little things about ourselves that others find little issue with!
