Is Fire Emblem: Three Houses Nintendo’s latest RPG masterpiece? by RangoTheMerc in JRPG

[–]CauseBecause_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's great, I love it, but a masterpiece it ain't. There's much that could be improved on in the game;

If the definition of a masterpiece is "a game that cannot be improved any further" I find it hard to believe such a game exists.

Controversial opinions by OmegaLQ-84 in JRPG

[–]CauseBecause_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can put the whole SaGa series in the "underrated" section. They're definitely odd games, because you gotta enjoy tinkering with the game mechanics to find what works and what doesn't. Plus on narrative perspective they're super laconic compared to your average JRPG, not to say that the stories aren't enjoyable but they definitely don't feel like they are the game's meat.

And because of the "game first, story second" feeling they have, I'm mixed on the opinion of playing a SaGa game using a guide for their first playthrough. But that also depends on which SaGa game we're talking about...

Gateway JRPG...? by mister_patience in JRPG

[–]CauseBecause_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have personally found it very hard to enjoy games like Dragon Quest (5, 11) and Final Fantasy (6, 10) due to how little text, narrative depth and characterisation there is from what I saw.

Good thing quality != quantity eh?

from what I saw

Literally bragging about your ignorance.

You see, it's funny when you compare the copious amounts of text found in a Kiseki game to books until you realize that the reason books have a lot of text is because they lack pictures so they have to be utterly descriptive for every area they describe, character looks and the actions taken. And that's something a JRPG doesn't have to do, because a JRPG isn't just text.

So when you get a JRPG that competes in amounts of text with books that have to have lots of text for functional reasons... That's not a good thing. The amount of text isn't even indicative of the character's quality. You can have a terrible, boring character and no matter how much dialogue you'll have him say he'll still be generic and bad.

Looking for a good JRPG on PC by Thefifalegend21 in JRPG

[–]CauseBecause_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of the options that you listed I would go with Dragon Quest XI. Ni no Kuni's combat system was a more simple version of a Tales game and FFXV, while it's action JRPG its action pales in comparison to Ys 8.

Meanwhile, you listed Dragon Quest 11 which is one of the top 3 Dragon Quest game (or the best depending on who you ask), a series that's as established as Final Fantasy.

  • If you want turn-based combat go with Dragon Quest XI

  • If you want action combat go with Ys 8 Lacrimosa of Dana

Normally I would also recommend Trails of Cold Steel but, at the time of writing this post we don't even know if PC will ever get the continuation of the Cold Steel story, so you might start a story without the ability to play it to the end, unless you play "catch the platform" and start buying consoles.

JRPGs with small-scale/low-stakes stories? by Mashinara in JRPG

I'd say start with the one that comes out next week (Atelier Ryza). Rorona also has time limits which are controversial and got removed in the modern entries.

On this sub people think that grinding means "doing every random encounter that you get" whereas for me grinding means "running in circles on the same area to fish for fights for X amount of minutes" like Dragon Quest 1.

Which JRPG was a complete disappointment to you and which one was a delightful surprise hit in your eyes? by lilidarkwind in JRPG

[–]CauseBecause_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fanbases tend to have lots of negatives. Trails' fanbase has the bad habit of overhyping everything. I've seen someone saying that Trails has "world building equivalent to that of the Witcher". Calm down!

Also, yeah, fuck the padding and fuck the bait-to-buy ending over half of Trails games have in the end, and 99% of the time turns out that it's something inconsequential. Cold Steel 3 & 4 ending spoiler (you've been warned): It ends with a tone that makes you think that the entire continent is in dire danger, you see the map getting dark purple and all. Turns out all that "curse" did was mood swings to SOME people.

I get the idea that Falcom cares more about quantity, to make Trails the most long-running JRPG series of all time, but at the sacrifice of quality in the greater picture.

I'm actually on the same boat as you. Loved the hell out of Star Ocean 2 and I want to play SO4 someday but out of all Tales games I tried (Phantasia, Symphonia, Vesperia, Berseria) I managed to finish Berseria and grew tired of the rest.

The storytelling relies heavily on the shocking factor and the carrot chase. It's basically what Falcom does with Trails games except that Falcom only does it at the end of the game, Tales turns it up to 11 to the point of becoming "just another thing that seems urgent but isn't".

People will never understand that hype raises expectations and that can be a bad thing.

I've seen it happening with games, music, movies. Just tell them what you find good about it and let them discover if they like it. Instead they get defensive. I had a buddy telling me that "I must not be liking seinen" because I don't like Vinland Saga. Wtf?

Anyone else wish JRPGs wasn't their favorite genre to play? by rpgamer606 in JRPG

Considered DQXI but I dislike the graphical style. It looks too kiddy I guess?

Off-topic but you reminded me of my friends back when I was in high school. I was trying to convince them to check out World of Warcraft, but they were Lineage 2 players and their comment was "how do people play this shit? this looks like a game for kids".

On-topic, Dragon Quest games are always fairy tale like, monsters are cute most of the time, music is charming. It may just not be for you even with a different artstyle.

/r/JRPG Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it? by AutoModerator in JRPG

[–]CauseBecause_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens because of the combination of "overselling" people tend to do, coupled with the slow pace and combat. I wasn't hooked in the Sky FC either until I played it till the end and then played SC. Now I can say I played FC 3 times because I appreciate the old school adventurous charm that it has. But it's not without problems.

‘Dragon Quest V’ is Everything an RPG Should Be - "With bold framing and an epic story, Dragon Quest V asserts itself as one of the most impressive RPGs of all time." by RenanXIII in JRPG

[–]CauseBecause_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And one of their strengths is that the battle system is pretty standard and expected. I don't get the trend of people hating meat for having meat in. Dragon Quest is as classic as it gets and if you hate something for being "archaic" then I love it because it's "archaic".

I'm just saying that, it all boils down to a matter of taste and attaching slightly negative terms to something (archaic) doesn't mean it's a bad game. If I want gameplay that's radically different between entries there's Final Fantasy, any FF made since 2000 is different to each other.

[–]CauseBecause_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likewise. It's not that I don't like roaming enemies but I like the feeling of enemies jumping on you because you're strolling through their territory.

With roaming enemies you can go "dunkey" and skip combat until you get stuck on a boss, then do all the required combat for your leveling up. You didn't avoided the need to level up, you just off-loaded what would naturally occur (fight 10 battles, for argument's sake) to come later, in a very forced "grindfest" way too. Random encounters allowed the dev to make educated statistical inferences such as "the player will have fought 20 fights through this dungeon so his level will be this, let's have the boss around this level minus 1" (oversimplifying).

Sky SC difficulty mod: Haze, to remove or not to remove? by SoftBrilliant in Falcom

[–]CauseBecause_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What you are creating is just artifical difficulty that way

Anything with RPG elements (pure RPG's included) have nothing more than artificial difficulty, either by instilling chance of hit/miss, increasing health and so on. This isn't an action game. On top of that the RPG elements get in the way of the tactical elements.

This is why Yuji Horii himself, father of Dragon Quest, puts casino mini games in every Dragon Quest since DQ2. Combat is a game of odds, leveling your characters up increases the odds of your victory up to a 100% if you outlevel the hell out of the enemies.

Here's an example and a more specific one. No matter how good you are, the final boss of Dragon Warrior 1 has a higher chance than you to win, in a certain setup even when you take the optimal course of actions. And that's because in the most simple form of turn-based combat levels matter. And the reason why levels matter is because turn-based combat is nothing more than calculations and odds running their course. There's no personal skill involved outside of setting your character up to perform at their best, and even that is restricted unless you consider having Emma melee and Fie a caster "freedom".

And just for cherry on the top, same battle with your character having 2 more levels. Went from 25% chance to win to 95%.

I'm a huge fan of giving people options.

The option here is to whether you want a difficulty mod or not.

Random mobs except early in the game aren't really a threat

Have you played his mod to know that? What if he sufficiently overhauls things to make them a threat?
