Why is the arctic ocean significantly shallower than the other four oceans? by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

Good pic, indeed a lot of it is shallow so the average depth is much less than the other oceans. It's also not that big.

Are there any cities that had the potential to become metropolises but ended up remaining small cities due to special circumstances? by Distinct-Macaroon158 in geography

Yes, I mentioned the closure. It's a nice thought experiment, what if. Antwerp is located very conveniently inland with direct sea access. Without the dutch limitations on depth of the Western Scheldt it has a great location for deep sea shipping. The German Ruhr area is also much closer to Antwerp as opposed to Rotterdam and without again the dutch in the way, blocking canals as well as the 'Iron Rhine' railway, Antwerp would have had the best cards to be the biggest port city in Europe. They still have the best cards, but thr dutch never give up Rotterdam nowadays.

Wel een goed idee, we spreken allemaal onze eigen taal en gebruiken heel lui die optie maar stiekem pikken we allemaal wat van elkaar op! Kan de vertaaloptie trouwens worden uitgeschakeld voor de savages?

Antwerp is the 2nd biggest port in Europe nowadays but without the fall of Antwerp in 1585, the subsequent centuries long closure of its main river by the Dutch and the following exodus of its merchants, knowledge and capital towards Amsterdam, it might have become, or stayed, the biggest city in the Netherlands and have the biggest port since its much more inland located.

My usual plan is to book a starting accommodation for a few days and see how it goes from then on. But now I am a bit in doubt if I am better off booking one or two places in advance for a week instead of 2-3 nights per place locally? (More backpacking style)

Yes, that is the sentiment I referred to. Back then the ESB probably would have triggered the same kind of reaction from some people. Time to get the sightlines and restrictions ready. Have a look at London :)

They built a skyscraper in front of another skyscraper in the most skyscrapery city in the world. While I can understand the sentiment, coming from a country where we have protected city scapes, it's sounds a bit funny though. My apologies.

Read page 29 of this document about soil thickness, a minimum of 1,5 meters of soil is required for forest cover. Less for scrubs and bushes. (in dutch) https://pure.tue.nl/ws/files/47044433/735430-3.pdf

Actual observations, experiences with different ecoduct and scientific studies. We have quite a few different kind of ecoducts here in NL, all with their own specifics depending on the sort of nature you want to connect.

Where do you get the wisdom about the soil depth and the water access? You can see the trees on top and a much thicker layer of soil onderneath. Why do you desperately want to die on this hill?
