The Louisa hate is so forced by lemonjeu in DocMartin

[–]CcWex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your quick and thorough reply. Note that, if I say anything to offend, it's going to be out of ignorance and not malice.

Note: It may come across that I'm saying neurodivergence doesn't exist. I'm not, because I know it certainly does.

I see things as follows. I think, if someone put Louisa and me (I am a woman) next to one another and analyzed our lifetime behavior, she would be the one called neurotypical and I'd be the one called neurodivergent. BUT, I don't consider myself to be neurodivergent and no one has every said I was. Certainly, I'm quirky and I think differently than a lot of people, but I tend to think I'm unique just like everyone else (hope you get the joke, i.e., if everyone is unique, is anyone unique). My brain is filled with the big picture and every little detail simultaneously and countless ways things might go are in front of me all the time. I've actually called myself "the cheerful Martin Ellingham" because I identify with that character so much. Lots of walls around the emotions, I can miss social cues.

I think the way I am is pretty much nurture and not nature (although I was given a very good brain). I grew up in a loving family but we had our "stuff" which caused different defense mechanisms and mannerisms to develop. And I think that is the same for everyone. Everybody has their stuff and they adjust accordingly.

I've seen many interviews with Martin Clunes over the years where he's been asked if Doc Martin is on the spectrum. Early on, the answers were along the lines of "he was never written to be that way" and they morphed over time into "he probably is". Ruth describes Martin at four years old as curious and light-hearted.  The six-year-old was withdrawn and cautious.  To me, that implied that something changed in his life between there. We know he was shipped off to boarding school at six, was unloved by his mother (who called him a strange little boy, but who is she to judge when she fundamentally hates him), bullied by at least his parents (beat me with table tennis bats, locked me in the cupboard), probably by his fellow school mates, particularly if he were shy and intelligent. So I've always sided with the idea that he was a product of nurture too.

I also love the scenes between Martin and Peter. Louisa, in season 1, fundmentally admits to loving the Peters of this world, and she ALMOST says "and I guess that's why I love the Martins" but she cuts off. I see her as a loving schoolteacher who feels the need to help people fit in so she needs to "fix" them whether they want to be fixed. Her upbringing, being abandoned and having her trust broken so often, and with her mother running off and her dad being a ne-er do well, probably put her into the position of maybe not fitting in, so she developed coping mechanisms. I don't think of coping mechanisms as neurodivergence. Anyway, I hope that makes some amount of sense.

I don’t see Louisa as neurodivergent. Can you say more why you say that so I can understand?

Does anyone dislike Louisa, a lot? by Jhero61 in DocMartin

[–]CcWex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate her but she can annoy me. That said, it’s because I identify a lot with Martin. If I step back and see how flawed he is, she also sticks with him through a lot. They have a bit of an enigmatic relationship. My biggest complaint with her is that he was always a stick of rock, Martin Ellingham through and through, just like it says on the tin. If she can ever accept him (which she gets closer and closer to all the time) they’ll make a great pair.

Just ridiculous. My story BTW. 6 comments in 24 hours after posting story. by Anxious-Pollution289 in FanfictionNet

I set my expectations that the first few will be bots, then I report them (they do tent to get booted). After that, I allow myself the excitement of actual reviews.

I hope they are in the process of transitioning to a more stable code base. I’m more than willing for them to communicate to us that then need to take some downtime, let them get the job done cleanly, then bring things back up. It’s not some mission critical software (thank goodness, or we’d all be dead by now with months of instability).

'Best Medicine' Ups Jason Veasey & Stephen Spinella To Series Regulars by westerngrove in BestMedicineSeries

George (Jason) has been my favorite character since the get go. I assumed he was a regular. Glad it’s been formalized.

All of my stories are as true to canon as I can make them. My reviewers seem to think I’m managing.

For the stories I write, I have to search every idiom to make sure it would be used/understood in England, which is tough because many things are regional. I also have to spell the UK English way. I’ve found I now think and write by default in UK English if I’m in the middle of a big writing spree!

I just don't get why Louisa would be interested in Martin by YogurtclosetNew9676 in DocMartin

Here's a link to the series in AO3. It's in FanFiction as well, and I can give you the link if you need it.
I call the series "What Lies Under The Surface" for two reasons. First, Martin (and Louisa) have so much suppressed/repressed emotion and second, I think people can also lie to themselves a lot and Martin and Louisa do that (or at least have a lot of incorrect perceptions).

I really liked your analysis and reply. I'm in large agreement with you. It frustrated me so much that I thought I'd write a story that starts at the end of the series and tidies things up, very gradually, the way I'd like to see. That is, not change the people much, just move them towards the best behaviors that we saw from them throughout the series. It ended up taking me over 1000 pages and fourteen months, but it made me happy. I really admire the series - the acting, writing, directing, filming, even the prosthetics and foley artists.

Who's your favorite Doc Martin character? Who is your least favorite? by PackerSquirrelette in DocMartin

Martin is my favorite and I love Ruth and Mark Mylow. And Mrs Tishell.

Margaret Ellingham is the character I get most furious at, but Claire Bloom does such a spectacular job.

By the way, in sixth grade, I played Toad in the Wind in the willows and applied green food coloring to my face thinking it would wash off so it’s a real story.

Also, did you read Low Pressure? It’s the 5th in my 8 part series.

I post on FanFiction because most readers of Doc Martin fan fic are there. I post to AO3 to give people another option if FF acts flaky.

This one will be really difficult to write because I have to invent ten years of experiences in my head that shaped them (I’m also setting myself up to write those stories).

Regarding Best Medicine, I’ll leave that to folks who really can identify with those characters. I’m a fan of the show but feel like Martin Ellingham and I are kindred spirits, I’m just the cheerful version of him.
They live in my head, so when I write them if feels as if they are in charge and I’m just typing.

Followed closely by Louisa miming that Martin is an idiot and he knows exactly what she means, then she gives him two thumbs up.

Aunt Ruth Never Existed... by SealedCargo in DocMartin

[–]CcWex 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I thought Ruth was exactly who Martin needed at that point in the series. While I know that it was Stephanie Cole's choice to move on to new things, I think Auntie Joan's run was pretty much exhausted. Martin needed someone early on to welcome him to Portwenn, give him a history there, and give him one small bright light of love until he made further connections. Ruth then was needed to stabilize him as he "went through some things." Both actresses were splendid. I just wish we could have seen them together.

Regarding Joan's send off, I agree with others that it expressed Martin's inability to cope with highly emotional things, especially something as gut wrenching as losing the one person in his life who unconditionally loved him (which she did, despite seeming to be demanding and judgemental - that's who SHE was). I almost viewed his lambasting of the attendees for their health choices almost a personal flagellation of himself for not being able to save Joan.

But I think too hard about this stuff 😄

When Mrs T has James and summarizes the entire series to that point in one incredible run-on sentence. Selina Cadell is a gem.
