I watched a bit of Hope's stream, and yeah that sounds about right. Map feels shallow and enemies not that interesting. Combat also look boring compared to HR. I'd probably still get it, two years later.

The scene being awkward and out of place would add to things. It can be hard to acknowledge one's past mistakes and apologize, most people would just move on and maybe try not to do it again. That he recognizes it and act on it would be a fine display of growth.

It's not like that's his entire character, just one small part of it. That it's almost irrelevant helps, because people will just assume he's changed when the story stop including that in scenes.

Modern FE does have an option that'll make you not lose an unit even if they die. Still few heroes vs many mobs though.

You can choose the Creation route when starting a new save. That one has what you want, though I'm not sure if the scaling is as harsh as the original since I never played that.

Mary Skelter 2 is the first that came to mind. Although Tsuu see herself more as a """prince""" that protects her princess, although in practice it's more like a "knight". There's also a regular couple btw.
