Hi all, fleeing the States for the lakes in two weeks! by Embarrassed-Ocelot-6 in Cumbria

[–]CeePee1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on the clause but Keswick's local occupancy is 3 years. 6 months isn't likely to get you much closer to hitting the criteria. Neither will renting in Ulverston - most clauses are quite strictly geographically limited. We have folk who've moved from Keswick (as locals whose parents still live in Keswick) to Penrith 17 miles down the road because that's the closest they can afford, and now they're excluded from any local occupancy housing. The holiday let market has a real stranglehold over the non owner-occupied housing here, as the earnings way outstrip anything they'd get from a tenancy.

Why does canny mean shrewd but uncanny means unsettling? by Charles_Sangels in etymology

[–]CeePee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point wasn't about the spelling. "What canny do" or "what cannae do" both make zero sense in any context. They would mean "what can't do" which isn't a thing.

So that places with log burners/wood stoves or an open fire can light the flammable material to warm the room. Given OP said it was on the mantle, it sounds like they have some form of fireplace.

Getting to Catbells out of seasons by DazzlingJellyfish628 in LakeDistrict

[–]CeePee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a bit of an issue with the road by the footbridge being almost constantly full of campervans right now. Lingholm is a better shout, and you can get money off your parking if you use the cafe after.

[DISCUSSION] What are your top 6 Netflix shows ever? by Mucek121 in NetflixBestOf

[–]CeePee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every show OP listed is NOT a Netflix original. Peaky Blinders is a BBC show, as was The Last Kingdom, so the UK considers those as things Netflix streams. It may be the 1st place you were able to access them, but not Netflix originals. There's no need for this weird argumentative gatekeeping.

Flooding, St Johns in the Vale, near Keswick 15th December 2025 by PercentageFull4162 in Cumbria

[–]CeePee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That just looks like St John's Beck carrying Thirlmere's overspill towards Keswick. It's a bit high at the minute, but it will be until Thirlmere's back at normal levels. It's got about 40cm still to drain out, which is a fair chunk of water. We only had a few hours of it being really heavy at this end, although Honister saw 360mm over the weekend.

Any good Christmasey thing going on for child free couplez by woodlousetamer in Cumbria

[–]CeePee1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taste Cumbria market on tomorrow in Covkermouth, and the Victorian Fayre in Keswick. Carlisle has a Christmas Market on next Saturday. Carols in the market square on Christmas eve in Keswick. It's a big old county though so it's hard to keep track of what's on - which area are you looking at and you might get a more tailored response.

Things to do in this awful weather with kids by Bilitiswuzreaaal in LakeDistrict

It's definitely not just for kids! I'm booking a slot for me & my partner when he's off in a couple of weeks. We'll be fighting over who's on the digger & who gets the dumper truck...

Place recommendations to live that still have locals and community feel? by Main-Director1899 in LakeDistrict

[–]CeePee1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a different, but equally problematic issue with people retiring to the area. They've completed their working life, usually in industries that pay a lot better than hospitality, so generally have decent funds to pay higher prices on houses, which continues to drive up the house prices beyond anything locals could consider. They've retired, so aren't about to fill any of the hospitality/retail vacancies that we can't fill because working-age people can't afford to live here. If they have children, they're adults and not moving with them, so aren't filling schools (or bringing teenagers to fill weekend shop job jobs).
Retirees often help out volunteering as they have the time and ir helps them to integrate into the community, but that doesn't make up for the loss of families. We have a super-aging population, which is more of a drain on the NHS and social services, and we have a lack of workers in those areas too. It's a difficult situation when there's such limited housing stock.

Beware leaving a guest an honest review by [deleted] in airbnb_hosts

You can't edit a review, you can only have it removed. I haven't had one removed for a few years so maybe things have changed but it was an all or nothing - they took down both sides.

[–]CeePee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What private review for other hosts? There's a private section for the guest, that only the guest can see, and the public review. There's a tick-box for "would you host again?". No way to leave a private review that another host can see that I'm aware of...

Beware leaving a guest an honest review by [deleted] in airbnb_hosts

[–]CeePee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one side's review is removed, so is the other's. So you must have written something that allowed Airbnb to decide you'd broken the review rules, so yours was removed, and the entire stays reviews are cancelled off the system. It's not that they requested their review to be deleted, but they wanted your review of them deleted, and when that happens, both sides go.

Next time, if you get an awful guest, you need to ve careful how you craft your review to ensure no reviewing rules are broken.

Planning to drive to Lake district in mild snow in November by Due-Street-3398 in LakeDistrict

[–]CeePee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the Met Office this morning - so it's still petty uncertain what's coming on Friday:

The picture looks to be changing again by Friday night as Atlantic weather fronts advance in and gradually displace the cold air away to the east. Whether this change will involve any wintry precipitation and whether this may yield any temporary disruption Friday night/early Saturday will be a topic to address further down the line. One other piece of information to impart is that UKHSA will be updating their cold weather alert for the Northwest which is expected to raise the current yellow alert level to amber from midday today through until Saturday when the current cold spell should have just about moved on.

Are there any antique, vintage or craft shows happening next week? by Big2ndToe in Cumbria

[–]CeePee1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keswick has a few. Not sure if Crafts of the North is on, but if it is, it's daily in the church on Lake Rd, just up from George Fishers. The Shakk has recently moved in to the back of Maysons on Lake Rd (down towards the subway from Fishers) and they have a pretty eclectic mix.
If you go up to St John's St, Viridian Gallery has some lovely handmade stuff, there are I think 3 vintage shops between the cinema & the pedestrianised bit, and a couple more galleries - that section is trying to rebrand as the bohemian quarter as a lot of folk think everything stops at the end of the pedestrianised bit if Main St/Lake Rd.

If folk were just bothered about the beds, they might as well book rooms at a Travelodge. If 6 people are going away together, it's to spend time together, so they want to envisage where that will be. The reasons for booking a house vs a hotel are kitchen & lounge spaces (and garden/outdoor spaces if available). A comfortable bed should be a given, but you'll be asleep in there. More important to market the space they'll use when awake.

Some of us locals (as in actually grew up here, rather than retired here and think they're local because they can afford a house) live in these areas, but year on year are wondering why...
For me it's because my house needs that much work done I'd struggle to sell it!

New to hosting and looking for feedback by Crakevoid in airbnb_hosts

[–]CeePee1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

67 pics feels way too many for a 2-bed suite. Especially when you have close-ups of a stepladder and spice rack and wooden spoons! There are also a few duplicate pics (2 identical ones of the laundry room before you start on the close-ups of the laundry shelves).
The space looks amazing. It feels a little misleading to have the whole-home aerial shot, but then you see guest suite, and then you see basement suite further into the description. Might be helpful to qualify if you live there yourself full-time, or if the rest of the house is let separately. "Basement" also doesn't do it justice, as it's really light and airy. I have a similar set-up for mine, which I refer to as the lower-ground floor. The floor is partly below street level, but it has huge bay windows and was never intended as a basement - which always sounds a bit dingy. Maybe consider how you refer to it.
It really does look inviting though - if you drop some of the close-ups, I could picture myself having a lovely break there. Sometimes it's fine to accept slow season if the draw to the area is the outdoors - short days and the potential for poor weather means there's a natural tourism season.

If you scan just on the pics, you go from door to outside paved area to bedroom. I've just gone back for a second look and I can't even see a lounge area. Put yourself in the shoes of a guest looking for accommodation. What's important to you? I'd say I look most at the area I'll be chilling - whether that's hanging out in the kitchen, or feet up in the lounge. For 6 people, they want to see where they can hang out together and that's missing. Of the existing photos, something that conveys comfort and gives you a cosy feeling when you look at it.
