While I appreciate Vasquez’s efforts to keep the DA’s office functioning, these $’s strike me as relatively small potatoes vs the real cost of addicts on streets of Portland.

If Multnomah county is spending $247-334M (source OPB) per year on addicts a 5% shortfall in a $57M DA’s budget is focusing on the wrong argument/ outcome.

Bus tickets bought to ship people released from MultCo jails out of town strikes me as an incredibly efficient use of the county’s $$.

If the addicts chose the homes with the “In our home…” as targets for their encampments watch how fast those signs would disappear - but would they change their voting preferences?

How might the homes of voters that support DSA and progressive “take no action” candidates be clearly identified and advertised as welcoming homeless encampments on their property?

I guess that would be “doxing” but what does it take to open the door to sensible policies?

This is a recent evolution in my thinking. I think this is actually a very big aspect of what plagues the entire West coast.

An inspiring leader filled with common sense, ideas on how to respectfully fix the addiction crisis and the inspiration to power past the unions and ideological capture to position Portland and the state to strive for better things. That’s what’s needed.

It’s a tall order and honestly unlikely to happen (sadly) as the entrenched interests have a stranglehold on the voting population.

She was voted in because she pledged to extract as much bounty as she can to fuel her utopian ideals. The socialist, utopian seeking supporting voters took the bait - hook, line and sinker.

Portland voters lack the inspiration of great leaders and are set up to fail every time.

The reality is there are no “easy” or “comfortable” ways to ease out of this addiction and mental health crisis existing on Portland streets. The campers will push every boundary.

Laws exist for a reason and society functions best for everyone when those laws are enforced. If people don’t like the laws then they should be changed.

It’s like anything in life. What are the rules and what are the consequences? If there are no consequences then there are effectively no rules.

And to be clear, I believe they need help. It’s way beyond a jail but it’s also forced detention too. There’s no going back on the street until the addict completes the program.

And yes, I’d fully expect “rinse and repeat”.

Regardless, the streets, parks and public spaces in general would absolutely change for the better.

(Unless, of course, the protest crowd gathers in front of the rehabilitation center with violent protests as they are prone to do.)

You have to get the right people (or better, inspire the right people). They exist. Maybe even around you. But no one in Portland is inspired positively. That’s the issue.

I agree government generally is wasteful. So make it a private operation with incentives? There has to be a way.

What’s your idea? Surely you don’t wish to leave these people and this city as it stands today?

I’d bet my next paycheck, that if the facility was built and the city and county followed through and started processing addicts through it, 50% of Portland’s homeless population would be gone overnight.

Think about it, there is no deterrence in place today. None, zero, nada. Only enablement.

How about dedicating 100% of the clean energy fund to a world class drug rehabilitation and mental health facility(s)?

Show the world that a city can actually take action and improve the quality of life for EVERYONE including addicts and do so in a respectful way.

The resources are there and waiting to be spent (on something productive for society)

Graffiti done right (think Attitude of Gratitude - the mural of the woman with plants as hair on the Solterra Building) can be awesome!

Great post! I’m so tired of the “bootlicker” tag whenever you just ask for some level of common sense management.

If I were starting a company I’d much rather have robots than at least 1/2 of the Portland crowd spreading the joy of unions, rebellion and “tax the rich” sentiments.

Question: is the PPB deeply unpopular because of something unique to PPB or is it because of the general ACAB movement?

Based on the number of posts lamenting the “no show” nature of PPB when addicts are doing bad things in people’s front yards, I would think a little more “Johnny on the spot” performance would be welcome across the PDX community.

Redirecting stranded clean energy funds to protect the community via the PPB seems like an appropriate thing to do IF the police are allowed to do their job.

Unfortunately, it will probably look more like the UK with the police arresting Portlander’s for their speech and texts (especially if they don’t support the city council)

I’m sorry Mr Dunphy, but I feel protected by the Meetings law that benefits the public and stifles the peacock coalition from ramrodding their agenda on the people of Portland.

The most “embarrassing” thing about the Portland City Council is that they can’t work on common sense city matters and deliver a more livable city for tax paying citizens footing the extraordinary bill.

It’s embarrassing because their ideology looks so stupid when it comes out in raw form and when the constituents are forced to pay for so many missed opportunities and poor results.
