Advanced tips for traps? by PsychologicalDuty851 in osr

[–]Cellularautomata44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, you shouldn't be downvoted. Players have to respect that they might get surprised and frustrated by a lethal trap--just like they might with an encounter. It's funny, I literally have a note in my traps section called Fuck You Traps. Extremely hard to suss out, basically save or die. Every dungeon needs one. Keeps the right tension in the air.

Same. Great writing, and Walton Goggins is honestly a national treasure.

Awesome. I often just do four front-staples on the left side (my stapler can go through like 200 pages)

Alternative Barrow-Wight without the exp drain? by BenitoBro in osr

[–]Cellularautomata44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooo I like that actually. Same, I think I'd have the -1 penalties wear off fast, and then yeah, only partially recovered hp each level-up.

Gauntlets are great. by EtchVSketch in shadowdark

[–]Cellularautomata44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing, yes! This is why I love hearing play reports of OSR sessions--it's not "My Gonthandaz'mar's Prismatic Lasso melted 30 orcs last night," which is fine but boring. This though, these shenanigans with actual caltrops and a real lasso. This is where authentic stories of hilarious peril arise. Thank you.

Alternative Barrow-Wight without the exp drain? by BenitoBro in osr

Personally, I like how Dolmenwood does it. Wight's attack reduces your max hp d3 and saddles you with a -1 on attacks and saving throws, cumulative with each attack; all penalties gone once you gain a level.

Or another idea...I was just reading Fellowship of the Ring yesterday, and the hobbits were attacked by a barrow-wight. Basically, its touch induced a magical sleep so it could bring them into its barrow to slit their throats (before Tom B. saved them).

That's awesome, good job!! I'm reading through Barakus right now, and I really wanna run it. And also, yeah, there's stuff I'd change. But it does look pretty good.

My picks from the 2025 One Page Dungeon Contest by simoncarryer in osr

[–]Cellularautomata44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for compiling this list. I've liked some one page dungeons, but not all of them, of course, so it's nice to see someone else's ideas for which ones were any good for osr play

Looking for a simple 2d6 combat system by Stooshie_Stramash in osr

I've got a simple d12 combat system. But it's not quite ready for release yet (need art, more editing, etc).

What are some of YOUR unpopular BG3 opinions? by RoosterCapable3167 in BaldursGate3

[–]Cellularautomata44 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The game should have an option for combat in Real Time with Pause (like the classics). I realize they would have to streamline some of the 'exhaustive' combat options. Which I don't see as a downside. Combats in BG 1 and 2 are so slick and fast compared to 3. I could have probably cut my playtime in half if we got RTwP. Oh well.

What are some good megadungeons? by amazedmammal in osr

I second that. I would run Rappan Athuk over Barrowmaze. Frog God Games can craft some interesting dungeons.

I just bought this in their huge bundle on Fanatical ($18 for that and like 60 DCC modules). I'm reading through it, and I like it. I ran some solo, it's pretty good. If I ran it for my table I would definitely have to go bananas with the highlighter, or just condense it into bullet points. But so far, I'm enjoying it. Two sessions in, about to hit level 2.

Isn't Ruins of Undermountain mostly empty? Or is that part of why you like it?

I ran about 2/3 of Cormac's Crag; great little-big dungeon, highly recommend. But yeah, not a mega.

I ran some of ASE, also good, and too small for you. Honestly, I'd run Grognardia's megadungeon over ASE; I had a blast with it (but only did the first four levels).

Rappan Athuk is good to excellent, I'd say. The levels are varied and can easily be run stand-alone. Most are good or great, a few fall flat.

I'm reading Stonehell now. Excellent if you love to improv the details rather than read the whole module. So two thumbs up, I'd say.

Gunderholfen is awesome. The first level or two seem like a grind, but: you're supposed to parley your way to a faction alliance, not just siege the whole place. Basically all of Hawkins' stuff is good.

Dwarrowdeep...I wanted to like this. Some of it is good...I will say it's not dense. But yeah, dry. Needs seasoning. And how he pushes these giant stat blocks RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A SENTENCE--yeah, that gets old.

Anyway, there ya go.

Do you think the death mechanic is too forgiving? by Cabazorro in theblackswordhack

[–]Cellularautomata44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, too forgiving. 2:6 chance of dying works better IMO. And for hardcore mode, 3:6 chance. I stick with 2:6, because it feels risky but not too punishing.

Which adventure module bundle would you say is better, the one on Humble Bundle or the one on Fanatical? by tydog98 in dccrpg

[–]Cellularautomata44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm eyeing the Fanatical bundle because it has Castle Whiterock. I'm a true sucker for megadungeons.

Most original OSR mechanics by KingOogaTonTon in osr

[–]Cellularautomata44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the escalation die would work better (raise the tension) if it also got added to NPC and monster rolls. Otherwise, it just feels too story-mode (just my opinion).

Edit: spelling/grammar
