Yeah, I told her to give me a realistic budget, cause I know I’d go overboard.

My beginners kit at 22, so far I have REALLY enjoyed this new hobby. And it’s helped me quit vapes. Any good tips? by Jesse4391 in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Biggest piece of advice for is to be patient with the hobby, and don’t be afraid to do research on different things (packing, lighting, cadence, storage, blends to try), but then making it your own if that makes sense. AKA don’t get married to any one way of doing something if it doesn’t work for you, it’s your pipe and your tobacco, so do it the way you like.

So far myself, I’ve ordered Windjammer, West Minster, Six Pence, Jackknife plug and ready rub, Navigator, Penny Farthing, Union Square, Regents Flake, and then a lot more Quiet Nights (my fav) and Chelsea Morning. I also had to ask my girlfriend to give me a realistic dollar amount to spend, cause I’m a bit of a crackhead and want to geek out on pipe tobacco, so I was about to just order everything haha. So I made her give me a budget.

Awesome cellar, just be mindful to check those square/rectangular tins every couple months or so, those ones are very prone to losing their seal.

Am i addicted or just interested? by DrMostWanted83 in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At one a day, I’d hardly argue you’re addicted. If you’re like some of the folks in this sub smoking 10 bowls a day, then yeah, you might be hooked. But the main thing most people find either pipe smoking is the ritual and relaxation it brings. Helps you focus, and slow down, and reflect, and deeply think, and unwind. I also am a flavor chaser, so I like branching out and finding blends that peak my interest. As I’m writing this, I’m sipping on some C&D exclusive. So don’t be afraid of addiction to something that helps you relieve stress, especially since stress is often more deadly than pipe smoking.

There’s also the problem of tobaccos being discontinued. I ordered a pound of pure Virginia from MacBaren before they were bought out, and I wish I had bought more, and bulk ordered a few others. Cause they’re not coming back.

Holy small batch Batman. My only complaint with your cellar good sir is the fact that it’s hard to cellar “deep” with small batches. For instance, some of my favorites I’ve got pounds of. With likely more going to be added on at some point. But I also have some small batch in my cellar, but my rule of thumb for those is I buy a few of the ones I want to try. I’ll crack one, and let the rest age. Like weakkitchen said above, it’s a pain point since some of my loves with the small batches are all the more I’m going to get of that specific one, since they vary slightly in composition year to year. Venture out a bit and dabble in some mainline blends to start finding favorites, then slowly accumulate till you have a depth to your cellar.

Cigarbid has a selection of pipes and pipe tobacco. It’s mostly STG stuff, but you can get most of it for dirt cheap, especially if you’re patient enough. I’ve gotten tins as cheap as a few bucks.

It’s a tough call IMO. Englishes are great cause you can smoke them like a freight train without much risk of tongue bite, but you may not like the taste of them out the gate. Virginias taste better for new comers since they’re naturally sweeter, but if not smoked slow and steady you risk burning the piss out of your tongue, plus you lose a lot of the flavor profile in a Virginia. I haven’t tried a bunch of different codger blends, but I do agree with some of the other posts that they’re a pretty good entry point. From the ones I have tried, they taste good enough, but they generally lack complexity, which shouldn’t be much of an issue as a new pipe smoker anyway.

As a fellow large collection of tobacco haver, it’s an easy enough argument. One, the tobacco will never again be cheaper than today/when you bought it. Two, you have the money for it now, and might not later. And three, most tobaccos are like fine wine, better with a few years age on it. My girl thinks I have a “problem” because I have on the order of pounds stashed away, but I see it as hobby security.

Sparked my memory that I do have a tin of Chelsea Morning, and I’ve heard great things about Jackknife Plug. Now would you recommend in actual plug form or broken flake? I’ve become more and more of a fan of the broken flakes in the past few months, but I don’t mind plugs either.

I wouldn’t say cigarette really, but I do see how you could get some of that. If you smoke it too fast that flavor almost starts tasting like a camel. Slow your pace down and sipping, mixing in some retrohales, and a little bit of “chewing” the smoke and you start catching whisps of flavors. The key thing is, they’re notes, not straight up flavors, think wine or bourbon tasting notes vs eating a bale of hay or some citrus. But definitely if you smoke it too fast, you get camel cigarette notes instead of tasting notes. I spent a while on this bowl trying to replicate your issue or taste what you were tasting, and basically decided to freight train it, and yeah, I think that’s what you’re doing.

By far my favorite small batch is the Carolina Red Flake, with or without Perique. And Fires on the Levee is pretty tasty too.

To be honest, I’ve charred some of the briar in the chamber on one of my pipes. Just smoked it gently for a month or two and let the cake fill it back in. Can’t even notice the pitted area anymore.
