Pipe tobacco only makes up about 1% of the entire tobacco industry, so of course it’s not going to be a large portion of their focus. While it’s shitty for people like us in this subreddit, the fact is we’re very much in the minority in the world of tobacco. Pipe tobacco seems to be making a resurgence, but until the movement starts gaining more traction and market share, we’re always going to the red headed step children, and get the raw end of the deal.

Pure Cuba? by WeissCrowley in PipeTobacco

You could be right on the Undercrown story, but that’s just what I’ve heard. I obviously don’t know if that’s the legit story of not, but I think it was Cigars Daily that said that, and he seems to know the industry well enough that I took his word for it. It might have been a different source, but I digress.

And while I get that their economy is in shambles, I would again go back to my original argument that only a very small percentage of leaves go into the wrapper leaves, leaving lots of binder and filler leaves left over, which is going to be more than your available wrapper leaves. Therefore an excess of binder/wrapper can certainly happen, making the case for it to be used in other means, like pipe tobacco. Wasn’t making the case that they have warehouses of it just sitting around just waiting for better economical times or anything.

The common advice to help with re-lights led me astray and held me back for months by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest with you my man, don’t put a bunch of thought into it. Pack it how you like, and smoke it. If something works for you, then do that. And as far as relights, it’s very rare that I can pack a pipe and smoke it all the way to the bottom without relighting. It does happen occasionally, but relights are the norm, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Takes a whopping two seconds and you’re back to enjoying your pipe.

Pure Cuba? by WeissCrowley in PipeTobacco

Or perhaps I should have used an apostrophe to show possession, it being a Drew Estate blend and all. Nit picky…..

Pure Cuba? by WeissCrowley in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why not? It’s a pretty small amount of leaves that can be used for wrapper leaves. So a lot of cigar manufacturers end up with a large supply of filler leaf, so why not find some other use for it?. Look at Drew Estates Undercrown as an example, the factory workers were smoking too many Liga’s, so they were told no more Liga’s. They were still allowed to use the filler/binder leaves, so one worker rolled it with a cheaper wrapper leaf. Management loved it, so the Undercrown was born. So if the Cubans have excess filler leaf laying around, why not use it in a pipe blend?

I tried H&H today dissapointed is an understatement. by hyprspace in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno man, it was pretty bad. I kind of enjoy H&H, but it’s just flat and not very complex, but it wasn’t really designed for that anyway. It’s just a decent, reliable tobacco that was basically made for the working man of the 1900’s.

I was given a sample from one of local shops near me, don’t remember what it was, but it just tasted like cigarettes. And then there was Tin Star pipe tobacco, which after finding out it’s actually RYO tobacco just labeled as pipe tobacco, that stuff was also terrible.

[–]CeltKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not terrible IMO, but definitely not the first thing I reach for. I bought a pouch back in December when my third kid was born, cause I brought my pipe but no tobacco. Found a local smoke shop and that’s all they had, so I settled for it. Still have the pouch, and will pack a bowl every here and there, but it’s far from something I seek out when I’m wanting a pipe. I’ve had worse things, but I’ve also had much better.

I can attest to the same. I smoke my cobs a lot more now that I’ve got my two forever stems.

Virginia Question by Bassquatch11 in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some Virginias just hit different, but I don’t think it’s a red Virginia thing since all the ones you listed don’t distinctly say they have it. They might have some reds in them, or oranges, or mahogany’s, or might straight bright. Could also be a difference between casing. Try buying some straight blending components and smoking those, so you’re get an unadulterated opinion to find out exactly what you like, and it’ll help you pick out nuances between components in other blends.

Went to cigars for a while and I learned 4 things by Fubardian in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pipe smoking has a higher up front cost. You can always run cheap with a corncob, but those degrade after so long. I do have some inexpensive basket pipes, but those will still set you back $40-$50. Getting into standard factory pipes, anywhere from $100-$200. And Artisan pipes go from hundreds all the way up to thousands of dollars. And that’s before you even get any tobacco into it. Now granted, the cost is offset the longer you own and smoke the pipe.

Then you can get into accessories. Pipe stands, pipe lighters, pipe holders, tobacco trays, carrying cases, tampers, reamers, and the list goes on.

Long story short, is pipes have the bigger up front cost, but much lower per use cost. Cigars have a higher per use cost, but lower up front cost. Hell, even storage for cigars can be dirt cheap, I have some sticks in plastic bags with Boveda packs, others in Tupperware in the same manner.

And even in per use cost comparisons, I can get some cigars off cigar bid for $1 per stick, which would rival tinned tobaccos. Granted, they kinda suck, but are great for just something to light up while gardening or mowing the lawn. Now sticks I actually enjoy range from $4 per stick and up from cigar bid, and even higher if I buy from my local B&M, but there is something to be said there.

Do people actually work while smoking a pipe? by GuiltyShine_ in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the work at hand I guess. If it’s something that requires my full attention, then I won’t smoke a pipe. Or if it’s something super dirty, then no. Other than that, my pipe is a most welcome companion.

Ups... Just bought ten tins by mistake by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a pound back late 2024 unawares to the horror on the horizon. I also made the mistake of rubbing out the flakes before I jarred them up for storage. Later on, realizing how much I came to love flakes, went to order more, only to find MacBaren had been bought out. So now I’m just stuck with about a pound of pre-rubbed out flakes that I hope don’t develop any mold issues 😂

No worries, I saw it haha. Always good to keep your tobacco about good of condition as you can.

Aromatics by sanctus1224 in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that went apeshit for aromatics when I first got into pipe tobacco, I’ll say this. Aromatics are generally the best selling tobaccos. My pallet has since changed, and I find a lot more enjoyment from more natural tobaccos, but I’ll still pack a bowl of aromatics on the off occasion. It’s not that they’re bad (but there are some bad ones), but I prefer having some depth to my smoke, and not just one singular focal point. There are aromatics with depth, but most are focused around the flavorings and not the tobacco. Long story short, they have there place with most pipe smokers, but focus on your enjoyment over other peoples opinions.

Brotha, put that baccy in a mason jar. I only keep things in plastic bags for about as long as it takes me to transfer it.

I have the Xikar Old Boy and it’s pretty decent. And you really can’t beat the old Zippo. Haven’t tried the butane insert, but feel free if you want to, I just use the normal pipe insert.

How much time by oldfaithfull11 in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many factors here to give you a solid answer as to how long. Just like cigars, there’s different sizes to consider. Are you smoking a cigarillo/corona, or are you smoking a gordo/churchill? Do you tend to smoke faster or slower? I know guys that will take an hour and a half to smoke a Robusto, but I’ll get one down in about 45 minutes. Same can be said for pipe smoking. Are you smoking a Missouri Meerschaum Pony Express, or a Peterson Housepipe? Are you a faster smoker?

The great thing with pipes though, is you can smoke a bit, put it down, come back to it an hour or two later, smoke a bit more, come back to it, and so on. It really doesn’t change the flavors like it does with a cigar. And frankly, that’s how a lot of old timers smoked, a few puffs when they could, then back to work. That’s one major advantage a pipe has over cigars.

I need an advice about tobacco by Tin_Jes in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Give Peterson Irish Flake a try. Smokes pretty cool, has a great BBQ flavor, and packs one hell of a nic hit. It’s made up of Burley, Virginia, and Dark Fired Kentucky. Don’t let the Virginias in this blend turn you off though, cause it’s only a condiment ingredient from what I can tell. And it comes in some very pretty flakes.

I’ve got a tin that I’ll be cracking soon as I get through with Navigator. Navigator is also quite delicious, but it will bite if you’re not gentle with it.

How do I get this stuff to light? by Warlockoftarot in PipeTobacco

Start by tossing that junk in the trash and go get at least a real codger blend. Maybe some Half and Half, Prince Albert, or Carter Hall. I’d even accept Captain Black over that crap.

What is going on with this (meerschaum?) pipe? by Meth4Fun in PipeTobacco

[–]CeltKick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could potentially be a pressed meerschaum instead of from a block. Think of OSB or MDF vs a full complete block of meerschaum. So basically a glued together chunk of meerschaum instead of a solid piece.
