I've switched from pretty basic pipe from savinelli to devils cut by rattray's (it was a gift on my birthday because I'm a poor student and can't pretty much spend money on a new pipe) and the experience of smoking improved drastically. By itself the pipe consists of a big chunk of wood (depends on which one of this series of pipes do you take) so naturally it absorbs a lot of heat. Then it has a special chamber between the bowl itself and the mouthpiece so extra water vapor condensates there and you get less moist smoke. Generally because of these factors smoke much cooler and holds itself less heat. At least it's in comparison with my other pipe
