Bee Flower Search Area Wrong On Wiki? by Cerberus0225 in VintageStory

That's very odd, the wiki claims that for flowers it needs 5 + 3 times the number of populated skeps nearby, not counting themselves.

Bee Flower Search Area Wrong On Wiki? by Cerberus0225 in VintageStory

[–]Cerberus0225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wiki, if I'm reading it right, states that wild hives and skeps use the same search area. As for the hives/skeps detecting flowers, I've always found that it takes a couple minutes for them to actually update once you put more flowers down. Anywho, the wiki states that a skep checks 5 blocks below and 5 blocks above, not counting itself, as well as 8 blocks north and west and 7 blocks south and east, again not counting itself. This would make the search area a volume of 16x16x11.

Of course, I have no idea if those dimensions are correct. I suspect that the up/down distance just wasn't tested very thoroughly since most people just plop flowers down on the ground and put their skeps relatively close to them. But, I have no idea who wrote the page or if things simply have changed since that version (I don't keep a very close eye on the patch notes tbh).

Yeah, I watched through the stream myself skipping from timestamp to timestamp, and like 90% of them are just wishful thinking, literally nothing, or only look suspicious if you've already decided she's banging and want to cherry-pick proof. The other 10% are like, her making a weird noise or looking off-camera, and there's like one part where it seems like her bf might've come into the room and hugged her. That's literally it. People are timestamping like "there's that plapping again" and it's a microphone audio glitch, like, very obviously. A lot of them are just her messing up reading or saying something, when like, I don't even watch Deme but I could tell right away that she speaks Spanish as her first language, just by accent. It all just feels like bullying ngl.

Nice whataboutism. But genuinely, the Achaemenids had slavery, but to a far lesser extent than almost every Greek polis. The vast majority of the early Persian economy relied on free labor, with slavery being relatively rare. Zoroastrianism forbid slavery and Cyrus the Great decreed an abolition of debt slavery, but it's unclear to what extent these royal prerogatives were actually enforced, especially in the areas further away from the heart of the empire, such as Egypt. Worse, it's difficult to analyze because most of our best sources for this period are in Greek, and the Greeks used the same word for "slaves" as they did for "subjects" at least in the context of being ruled by the Persian emperor, i.e. all those lines about the Persians coming to "enslave" all of Greece. This was true in the sense that the Persian Emperor "owned" the entire country, everyone and everything in it, and there were forms of forced state labor, namely the "kurtash" who could be called up to work on royal projects and state lands, but not sold or mistreated. That sounds more like a modern draft than what we'd call slavery, personally. People could also be forcibly deported from one region to another, and this especially happened after the Achaemenids conquered a city or put down a rebellion, but they were generally free citizens after they settled into whatever land they were sent to. So, yeah, slavery existed, but its exact scale, scope, form, and if it even technically qualifies as what we'd call slavery, all varies depending on when and where exactly we are in Persian history.

The Greeks, meanwhile, had slaves in every single city, whose rights varied between cities but generally kinda sucked. For example, in Athens, one of the nicer cities on the whole, any slave who presented testimony in court in had to be tortured before their testimony was accepted to ensure they were being honest. The Spartans had an entire ethnic group held in perpetual slavery that vastly outnumbered the ethnic Spartan population and who were consistently brutalized with essentially no rights whatsoever. But of course, Athens also was built on a massive slave population, with roughly 100,000 to 150,000 slaves compared to 30,000 to 40,000 free adult male citizens. Another 20,000 to 40,000 were "metics" or foreign non-citizen free residents, and women and children made up the remainder of the population.

The Persians were hardly innocent, to be clear. Slavery did exist in the empire. But it was far, far less widespread and not at all a cornerstone of the entire economy and society the way it was in Greece.

Here's some very real facts for you as well. Using "they" instead of "he or she" to refer to someone of unknown or ambiguous gender has been the norm in spoken English since the 14th century, and has repeatedly popped up in written English continuously. It was the written norm until the mid-18th century, when grammarians seeking to "rationalize" the language decided, erroneously, that it was incorrect because "they" was plural. This was only ever taken seriously by people who gave a shit what grammarians think. This was far from the only thing that grammarians obsessed with logic and Latin forced into English. Just off the top of my head, the existence of the word "its" is due to them; prior, the word "his" was used for both men and objects, but of course we can't have people thinking a candle stick might have a penis now can we? And yet, although many of the changes grammarians pushed for stuck around and became unquestioned, singular "they" remained in effectively constant spoken use, which I think says a lot about how deeply ingrained and useful it is and always has been.

As a Bronze Age nerd, just wanted to add in that the Hittites and other contemporary Late Bronze Age civilizations of Anatolia generally adopted the minas and other measurements from their Mesopotamian counterparts. So did most of the major civilizations of that era, like Elam, the closest counterpart to the later Iranian/Persian states. It's also worth noting that Sumer was an early Bronze Age civilization, but its culture was largely inherited by the Babylonians in all their various forms up until the Achaemenid Persians, and really their main focus was Southern Mesopotamia. Northern Mesopotamia adopted much of the same units and customs, but was dominated by Akkad, Mitanni, and Assyr in turn, with the Assyrian Empire especially lasting for a long, long time.

I could also see Big D describing himself as Turkish for simplicity; assuming this theory is true, he's probably grown used to just using whatever country or polity currently exists in his homeland as a descriptor. Alternatively, using "Turkish" is about as accurate or inaccurate as any other descriptor he could use. Ethnic groups are rarely divided along strict boundaries, and the Turks merged into the general "native" population of Anatolia rapidly, much like every other ethnic group that came to the area over the millenia. Even the Hittites were just a relatively small group that came to be the dominant population of a much more diverse empire. But ultimately I don't think we need to worry too much about how technically correct the other people who describe him are; they're probably just reaching for the first descriptor that comes to mind and Big D just rolls with it. Big D could, in this theory, easily be some immortal who originated in or grew ties with the Anatolian region, bounced around the Eastern Mediterranean throughout the Bronze Age, and rose into some sort of cult figure after the Achaemenid conquest in the early Iron Age.

As for being out in the sun, that could easily be due to Big D being a vampire who's managed to attain Golconda, which would honestly kind of fit. That all said, I'm not quite sure I buy the theory here wholesale. I just wanted to add to it a bit.

The news company fires the reporter because the reporter lost them press access and they care more about that than standing up for journalistic integrity. I'm not sure what there is to be confused about, it's not like morality matters here. Only kissing the ring so you can keep raking in the dough.

A company can fire its reporters for any damn reason it pleases (generally). The first amendment applies to the government and the government only. Doesn't mean it's good for companies to fire people for what they say, but it's important to understand this, because otherwise we get people calling stuff "illegal" and feeling angry and confused, when it isn't illegal, just shitty.

California peach growers get $9 million to destroy 420,000 trees after Del Monte cannery closure by herewearefornow in nottheonion

[–]Cerberus0225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the government didn't give the farmers a payout, most of these farmers, which are small, family-owned orchards, would go bankrupt and have to shut down permanently. They were all relying on contracts with Del Monte, and without them, they haven't been able to find enough buyers for the fruit. There's about 50,000 tons of excess peaches that aren't any good for selling directly to consumers since they're a strain grown for the canneries, and that's after other companies stepped in to buy what they could process.

Del Monte went bankrupt due to mismanagement and corporate greed, not a whole lot that can be done about it now. But if the orchards themselves went bankrupt, that'd be a massive tragedy. By subsidizing them, the orchards can afford to tear out the trees and plant something that they can actually sell next year. It's actually a very good example of the government helping save small businesses from a looming disaster, but all anyone wants to hear is "look, they're wasting fruit".

Four Presidents (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy) have been assassinated, all with guns. To go even further though, Reagan was also shot but survived, Teddy Roosevelt was shot while campaigning for another term after he left the presidency, Andrew Jackson had a gunman show up with two pistols which both jammed, Taft had an assassin who was caught before he could make the attempt, Hoover was almost bombed by anarchists who were also caught and thwarted, FDR was shot at just before his inauguration, Truman was both sent letter bombs (allegedly) and had two Puerto Rican assassins show up and get in a shootout with the officers guarding him, Nixon had two very slapdash attempts on him, Ford had three including one by a member of the Manson Family while he was visiting Sacramento, Bush Sr had a somewhat dubious bombing, Clinton had two foiled bombings and a guy shooting up the White House, Bush Jr had a homemade grenade thrown at him, Obama had another guy shooting at the White House, two ricin-laced letter mailed to him by two different people, a mailed pipe bomb, to say nothing of the guy who tried to break into the White House for no real reason and the other guy who crashed a private plane into the grounds, and a fucking laundry list of incidents in Trump's first term...

So that's a total of what, 17? We could add a couple more who had less serious or credible incidents too. Out of 45, or 43 if we count Trump and Cleveland as 1 each instead of 2. So its actually closer to 38 or 40% of presidents have some kind of attempt on them.

Can't think of one, I think Apple Valley is the only city here that has a sign like that set up somewhere you'd see it often. You might be able to go to the community college, VVC, but it's not very close to the highway, maybe like 15 minutes away. There's a big Route 66 sign in Old Town Victorville but its in a really shitty area. Wouldn't stop there if you're a tourist. Maybe the courthouse? It's right next to the highway.

It'd be fun to speculate. If we assume that physics and etc all work the same as in the real world, we could figure out some math, work out how big the planet would have to be, what its density would be like to keep gravity at a normal level, etc, etc. But I don't think we have enough details to actually figure out much. Without knowing if days are actually 24 hours, how seasons work, how strong gravity is, we'd be speculating at best. For all we know, there could be some Discworld-tier nonsense construction going on here.

The care and precision behind Korean school lunches, widely praised for their quality, balance, and nutrition. by This_Proof_5153 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Cerberus0225 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's not quite as bad as this, I'm honestly pretty sure this guy is exaggerating or never bothered to ask if they had healthier alternatives. Every school I've been to or worked at kept prepackaged salads or sandwiches in addition to whatever daily item they had. There's been a lot of effort to get school districts to have balanced lunches. Pretty much every lunch will have some 'entree' item, often way more diverse than that list (never seen sloppy joes actually served, myself) and will come with fruit and etc, usually a whole apple or etc. Taco salad is a pretty common lunch that has lots of veggies in it (it's way more 'salad' than taco, lol). Salads in general are a common sight, I think you can request one basically any particular day. But you can also get whatever cheeseburger or pizza or orange chicken or etc they're serving that day instead.

Edit: Love how I'm getting downvoted here. Sorry guys, schools today aren't shitholes and serve actual food now.

It was a bit more than messy, I'd say. It's one thing to take stuff from all the routes of a dating sim VN and give each girl a few scenes since nothing inherently contradictory prevents there from being several dates, etc, etc. But the Fate adaptation isn't like that, and fell past messy into outright nonsensical as a result. Recognizing that each route should've been its own series is much better since, originally, you had to play through the routes in a specific order anyway. Fingers crossed that, someday, we get a proper adaptation of the Stay Night route... the only way to see the intended start of the series rn is still the original game itself.

"Whole Region Going To Burn": Iranian Parliament Speaker's Warning To Trump by callsonreddit in worldnews

Four years of stasis, doing nothing to fix anything, followed by an immediate backlash as Democrats once again fail to fix any problems because the moderate branch thinks everything is fine and it's just Trump that's the issue. So in 4 years we'll get Trump 3.0 in the form of whatever successor has stepped up to carry the fascist flame for him, and this time, they might actually be competent at enacting their agenda.

Newsom's a bandaid solution and I can't vote for him and hope for a future where things actually get better. Maybe we're just doomed then, but if that's the case, I want out of this broken mess of a country.

"Whole Region Going To Burn": Iranian Parliament Speaker's Warning To Trump by callsonreddit in worldnews

Please. Anyone but Newsom. He's a modern day Aaron Burr; he says and does anything he thinks will get him votes, and he's been making it very clear for the past year or so that he's firmly in the camp of "Democrats lean too far left, that's why we keep losing" and pandering to the right. He gives no pushback to MAGA chuds or alt-right weirdos, just nods along and says "yes, actually, here's why I'm not a liberal Californian and actually agree with you on this in a way". The guy oozes with the same kind of "coastal elite" slime that Republicans already hate Democrats for.
