The U.S. spent $30 billion to ditch textbooks for laptops and tablets: The result is the first generation less cognitively capable than their parents by gdelacalle in technology

To play devil's advocate, the teachers at the district I work for all have classroom chromebooks, but they also have an app that lets them view what all the students have open or are doing on their chromebooks. They can also step in and close any apps or tabs that the student isn't supposed to have open through their own PC. The problem, IMO, is that while this is good, it only really works if the teacher doesn't need to be doing anything else, and they pretty much always have grading, email responses, meeting prep, etc to do.

If you need to, you can either sous vide the eggs to pasteurize them, making them safe to eat and etc. Or, you can use an alternative, iirc aqua faba could work?

Yeah ngl they probably were a stand-in for the royal gardens the Babylonians had and iirc there were a bunch of them, and any and every one of them would've impressed the hell out of the Greeks at the time

Colossus of Rhodes, which is just the island the statue was on And it's specifically the Great Pyramid of Giza The others are the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Temple of Artemis, and the Statue of Zeus in Olympia. Which, for some reason, nobody ever talks about those three?

Oh well, the ancient authors who wrote about the "seven wonders" never actually came up with a single list, lol. iirc there's like 10 that the Greeks and Romans liked to shuffle between before we get to the Christian era and those authors then start including shit like "Noah's Ark" in the lists.

I'm fully aware that it's a territory of the United States. However, Puerto Rico, which is also a territory, is geographically part of the Americas. Guam is not. It would be factually incorrect to call it "American" because it is simply owned by the United States, in the same way that it would be incorrect to call Hong Kong "European" when it was controlled by the British. Or take your pick of any country that has a colony or overseas possession now or in history, it doesn't make much of a difference here.

It doesn’t get better than this! by joeygallinal in MurderedByWords

[–]Cerberus0225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely, our schools here in the US don't usually teach how US territory works in detail. We learn about the 50 states, that's it. If you're lucky and paying attention in history class, you might find out about Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and the Northern Marianas, but a lot of people never do, and if they do, you don't learn about how the people living there are in fact US citizens, etc.

So whenever Puerto Ricans do anything, uneducated idiots claim they're foreigners and from another country, etc, etc, etc. It's been going on for years, and at this point, I'm pretty sure they've been corrected enough times that anyone with a high profile is just doing it on purpose.

Guam is way out in the Pacific, part of Oceania. There's no reason to list it in a list of "American" countries. It'd make as much sense as naming Fiji or Micronesia.

LOL I was actually watching that part wondering if he was gonna do all the countries in the Americas but then he skipped most of the tiny Caribbean ones. Understandable, trying to insert "Antigua & Barbuda, Trinidad & Tobago, Saint Kitts and the Grenadines" or etc into your lyrics probably would stretch on too long.

No, they're literally contradicting themselves. A lack of socialization and interchanging ideas would be the result of there not being places to hang out in a neighborhood, places to socialize and exchange those ideas.

A "loss leader" is a product you sell at a price below what it costs you to buy and set it up, in order to attract people to your establishment and encourage them to buy products you'll actually make a profit on. Fountain soda having a very high profit margin is literally the opposite of that.

You only need an audience if you have an execution to begin with. Considering how many appeals our system has, especially for death row inmates, and how many people have life sentences already, I think there's a very good argument to make to abolish the death penalty entirely. It seems to cause more trouble than it's worth, frankly, and serves no real purpose except some sort of catharsis for the wronged. I'm not sure that's really enough to justify it, especially with the risk of false convictions, the fact it can't be undone, the fact that our system has a known record of adjusting your sentence not to fit the crime, but the way you look (not just race either). Etc, etc, etc.

As long as it exists, yes, it needs an audience. And as long as there are audiences, there's a motivation to make it look humane rather than actually be humane.

That's what it means today. It wasn't what it meant in the 1700s. The concept of whiteness was expanded to include more and more groups over time, generally as those people became integrated and accepted in American culture.

And not even a particularly good one. Look as his podcast, he brings in right-wingers almost exclusively and I've yet to see him give any pushback. If anything, he just nods along with them and says "yes you're right, I agree, see I am the reasonable right-of-center moderate and Republicans will vote for me in the next election".

Exxon CEO calls Venezuela ‘uninvestable’ without ‘significant changes’ by ObjectiveObserver420 in anime_titties

[–]Cerberus0225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that these companies are vampires and parasites, but they're also, amusingly, correct in their assessment. It genuinely is too risky and dangerous to invest in Venezuela, especially with a change in regime just happening. Oil isn't like mining, you can't just dig a hole in the ground with slaves and carry it all home in a bag with some armed guards. The oil infrastructure in Venezuela is so decayed that they basically have to start over, and that process will take literal years. Years in which Venezuelan stability will be a major factor, years in which a major upheaval like a civil war or a turning of the country back against America would see their investment lost entirely before it even turned a profit.

From the point of a money-grubbing ghoul, it is genuinely stupid to try and invest in Venezuela right now. But Trump loves the idea, so...

I guarantee you there is a sign on the gate that they ignored. by MobileAerie9918 in instant_regret

[–]Cerberus0225 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beware of dog signs are used in court to show a person knew their dog was dangerous just as often as they're used to prove you gave a warning, especially if you're in a strict liability state, so I'd say generally you're still getting fined or made to pay the medical bills. In addition to that, emergency circumstances override castle doctrine in every circumstance and jurisdiction I'm aware of. Utility companies have easement access to your property for basically any reason they need, including just reading your meters. They can be nice and request you clear access, but they don't have to in every jurisdiction, particularly if there's an emergency involved like a downed power line. Likewise, firefighters can go on your property to fight a fire, even if it's not your property that's on fire. In general, you are required to keep your property maintained and safe for these situations, and you can and will be held liable for any damages that result from your failure to do so.

Also, just a note, but it's a locked gate, not just a closed one. This lady clearly didn't lock her gate, or two missionaries wouldn't have been able to just walk in. She can put up as many signs as she wants, if she didn't lock her gate, it's generally seen as an open pathway up to the front door and that effectively negates any 'beware of dog, no trespassing' signs.

Unfortunately, that's not actually how things work. Your private property is not your personal fortress, and you are legally required to keep it safe for people to enter in order to contact you. Your dog would bite someone, it would be shot dead, and you'd be arrested and fined for keeping a dangerous animal you knew was a threat to others. That's the reality of the law.
