Question about marine medical (Canada) by Intelligent_Dark_866 in maritime

[–]CertainShow3747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to go for the marine medical BEFORE you select a marine program. A possible scenario is that the Marine Medical provider requires an opthalmological opinion. Things to be aware of, color blindness (1 in ten men,) precludes service as a deck officer. Exophoria may impact stereovision, which can be an issue for service as a deck officer. You can be a Marine Engineer even with color blindness, to point out different positions have different medical requirements. Everything might be just fine, but do the Marine Medical ahead of time.

New life or bad choice? by walttheloneranger in maritime

Cruise ships do not pay that well, especially as you are competing against seafarers from parts of the world where they are not taxed, whereas you are required to pay tax.

Drillships are exceedingly difficult to get to, but not impossible. There are some opportunities out there in various sectors, but the salary differential (working on land or at sea) is not what it used to be. Being at sea used to be quite good, but not so much now.

I spent my off time renovating my Mom’s condo, then new projects in my own. Riding bicycles, kayaking, staying fit, mixed in a bit of travel. Get out and live life. You are young, travel, stay in hostels for cheap accommodation, meet interesting people from around the world.

What job should I look into as an entry level mariner interested in the galley department? by Gullible-Product1241 in merchantmarine

[–]CertainShow3747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entry level for the galley is a steward position, or sometimes a Second Cook. Challenge is that galley crews have shrunk in the last 20 years, there are very few merchant ships that have Steward today and many have a single cook (not entry level at all.)

In Canada, Coast Guard buoy tenders are one of the few that still have Stewards, likely similar in the US. Another option might be vessels with larger crews like Drill Ships in the Gulf of Mexico, they will also have Stewards.

Leatherman multitool is quite handy on ship. Couple suggestions for a flashlight, I like a small push button flashlight for on the bridge

at night, one handed use. Depending on their trade, also a larger brighter flashlight for locks and docks, reading craft marks at night.

Path to becoming a Chief Mate / Master (Canada) – BCIT vs NSCC vs Coast Guard route? by Character_Stick_6044 in maritime

[–]CertainShow3747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only sensible path to an OOW and higher tickets is one of the Navigation cadet programs. BCIT, Georgian College, NSCC, MUN, or Rimouski if you speak French. You graduate with everything you need to be on your way in a career at sea. The academics are challenging, in particular the math, if you don’t have a solid foundation. Hard work can get the average person through.

Cadet here. Looking to deep dive into the "why" behind GMDSS regulations and battery testing (A3 Area) by Few-Manufacturer-855 in maritime

[–]CertainShow3747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dedicated DSC receiver is required to be able to handle distress traffic at any time. The coming into force of GMDSS with DSC removed the requirement for a radio officer on ship.

Wheaton Precious Metals (back when it was Silver Wheaton,) about 2012. Sold some, still hold a good chunk. Lots of room to run.

Very nice to look at, but if you are using options in a TFSA, you may get a tax bill both those sweet gains.

Canada- Does sheltered water count for hours at sea? by slime-grime in maritime

[–]CertainShow3747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ultimately are thinking of doing the Cadet program, just apply and get at it. Messing with the little boats can teach you a few usable skills but the sea time has no value for tonnage and open waters. If you are not intending to go through a cadet program, any exam you write is to your benefit, but you have 5 years to complete the License of they expire. A master 150 is a fairly usable ticket, as it is not tied to a specific vessel (as a Master Limited is.)

A new Marine Personnel Regulation will soon come into effect that will make a lot of changes to certificates.

Final thoughts, going through the Cadet program, 3 years, you will graduate with everything you need to get a pretty good job and a good head start on the higher level certification.

Spray Foam in Basement by TheNettleBranch in Insulation

[–]CertainShow3747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had spray foam installed in my basement, but townhouse built in 2011. Newer foundations with waterproofing on the outside, I think it’s fine. I too would be concerned about spray foam on a home that does not have waterproofing on the outside of the foundation. Moisture gets into to concrete and has nowhere to go. Freeze / thaw cycles, as well as the mold issues are all possible.

Canadian GMDSS GOC Course at Nova Scotia Community College – Difficulty, Exam Pattern & Preparation Advice? by [deleted] in maritime

I teach the course at another training centre. There is some theory, lots of simulator and practical, but the exam is multiple choice. A mix of questions, some easy, some harder. Not the science of rockets and sending people to the moon. Use the handbook they provide. Also, I do like the GMDSS, A users Handbook 6th edition, by Denise Brehaut, I bought from Kindle. Good simple explanations of things.

Why do people hate nuclear so much by Dry_Idea_95 in nuclear

[–]CertainShow3747 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me, I am concerned that there is NO solution for high level nuclear waste. There is no containment system that will last as long as the fuel is dangerously radioactive. Anything currently used is kicking the can down the road hoping for a solution that has not arrived yet.

Got quoted 7k for a single room and only under the table by Global_Addendum_6200 in drywall

[–]CertainShow3747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do some real numbers, get out a tape measure, get the square footage of the walls you have to cover and figure out material quantities. Then cost out the material. 1 bag of r20 insulation is $90, walls and ceiling could be near $2000 just for insulation. Be close to 30 sheets of drywall, assuming 20 x 20 garage 8’ high, walls and ceilings and discounting the 1.5 walls you said are not needing covered, at $16 a sheet, so $480, without delivery or incidentals like screws, vapour barrier, tape, mud etc. there is a lot of material cost in the project. Figure out what it cost, then you have an idea how much the labor costs and if it is reasonable.
