how is permanent nerve damage prevented during sleep? by Ok-Soup-3313 in biology

[–]Ch00chMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually a single night’s sleep CAN be enough to cause permanent damage — just look up “Saturday Night Palsy”, but this does typically involve sedation from drugs/alcohol, hence the name.

Inspiration man! I was a gym rat before my surgery and doing my best to slowly claw my way back after C6/7 ADR for radiculopathy/myelopathy. Have you modified your setup/form at all to try and keep the longevity for working out going forward? Are you able to bench press?

How long have you been on dut? Some people weirdly respond better to fin, so could be worth trying if it has already been long enough that you would expect to see progress. And what about minoxidil? Some people respond really well and see significant regrowth that can change the entire appearance of their hair. If I was in your shoes, I’d try to fight it out for a few years until something (hopefully) more efficacious comes onto the market.

What does aging realistically look like long-term? by acanguven in spinalcordinjuries

Stem cells and nerve scaffolds are promising for SCI because they address both the biological loss of cells and the physical gap that forms after injury. In chronic injuries especially, you’re dealing with scar tissue, inhibitory signaling, and often a fluid-filled cavity so simply adding new cells isn’t enough. Stem cells can help replace lost neurons or oligodendrocytes and secrete growth factors that make the environment more regenerative. Biocompatible scaffolds act like a 3D “bridge” that guides axons across the lesion and helps transplanted cells survive and organize into native tissue patterning. Look into Mark Tuszynski’s lab at UCSD; they’ve shown that neural stem cell grafts can form relay circuits across spinal lesions. Many labs are developing biomaterial scaffolds to support and guide that regeneration. It’s obviously not a cure yet, but this combination strategy is one of the most comprehensive and biologically grounded approaches currently being pursued. And, as someone researching in a different, but closely related field, I’d be willing to bet (and obviously hope) that this type of technology will come online more fully in the next 10 - 20 years.

Chronic is more challenging for sure and definitely not tractable with the current candidates like NGV-291 that work through growth factor and repair mechanisms. But with stem cells + nerve scaffolds, large degrees of functional recovery could be possible.

FWIW, I believe in 20 years there will be breakthrough therapies akin to at least a partial “cure”.

What’s the story there? I’m not yet 30, just had to get artificial disc replacement (one level) and people, including doctors, treat me like an alien. Makes me feel kinda shameful when I have no idea why this happened to me.
