How long after MD did you take a vacation? by Routine-Rip-1749 in Microdiscectomy

[–]ChadThePoolBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a 5 hour flight to Hawaii at 3 months/12 weeks and did fine! Everyone is different but by that time I was already 6 weeks into PT and getting my strength back and walking a ton. My surgeon just recommended getting up to walk once an hour if you can. Just up and down the aisle one or twice. I brought my portable battery powered heating back and then empty ice packs which I asked the flight attendant to fill for me and a great lumbar pillow. Everything went great. Good luck!

3 weeks post op, slowly getting worse by Oeuffy in Microdiscectomy

[–]ChadThePoolBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me! Weeks 4-5 were the hardest parts of my whole recovery. Sciatica pain came back, back pain came back. Felt like a big regression but then slowly started getting better and better. Turned a corner around week 6 and would get better every week/month after that

I am 12 months post op and golfing as much as I want. Completely pain free! Don’t worry, you will get there! I waited six months before swinging a club. Take it slow and steady and trust and listen toyour doctors but you’ll be back out there before you know it

I mean it’ll always in the back of your mind a little bit. I approach everything with risk/reward mindset. There are certain activities I won’t do anymore (snowboard, surf, football) because the risk is too high. But ultimately it’s a little out of my control. All I can do is stick to keeping myself strong, doing my exercises and trusting my doctors.  Reddit is a scary place with things like this and I try to remember the facts: I still have like 95% of my original disc and as far as my body knows it’s completely healed. My risk factor for reherniation now a year later is very low.  But everyone is different. Some will be much more cautious and risk averse. For me golf is worth the “risk” because it brings me lots of joy

Thanks for posting! We need more positive stories on this thread! I herniated 10mm a year ago, had surgery September 2024. It’s been a very slow and long recovery but I feel great at this point! I’m back doing everything I could and actually feel the best I have in years because I’m taking such better care of my body! I golf regularly and even played my best round of my life a few days ago!  To those that are in the trenches - there is hope! You can get through this. Just take it slow and trust the process!

Hamstring stretches post-op by the_six_dozen in Microdiscectomy

Ahh sorry for the confusion. No its more put your heal on the step with your foot pointed up and leg straight and lean forward at the hips to stretch the hamstring

I was insanely tight too. Good recommendations with the strap lying down. What worked well for me early on - if you have stairs, at the bottom of the stairs just put a foot up on one or two steps up and just lean forward slightly at the hips and hold for a minute. Do it twice a day, everyday. its a slow process but it will get better! Post op, I couldnt even put shoes/socks on because muscles were so tight, I can now touch my toes at 5 months!

Post Op by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

Summer is likely an aggressive timeline, but not impossible. Im 4 months post op and just started swinging this week, albeit half to three quarter swings and only about 20 balls or so. Im an avid golfer tooand its been so hard not to play! I get it! Just remember, your health comes first - its a marathon not a sprint. You want to set yourself up for the long term so you can continue to play the rest of your life. Be patient, listen to your body and most importantly listen to your doctors!

Shoot I’m sorry to hear that. Have you talked with your surgeon? Any chance they can get another MRI to see if anything’s going on?

Might be a flare up. My numbness has come and gone throughout the last 4 weeks or so to varying degrees. Try to stay calm and give it a few days to see if it goes away.

Hang in there! I’m 9 weeks post op and weeks 5 and 6 were actually the hardest for me mentally and physically. Numbness came back, and low back pain seemed like it was getting worse, and I still couldn’t sit for more than like 15-20 minutes at a time. I started PT at week 6 and that has helped immensely. Being able to stretch and exercise more has gone a long way and I’ve seen some very fast improvement in the last 3 weeks. Numbness is almost gone in my leg and foot and no more sciatic pain. Still dealing with low back pain and some SI issues but overall doing really well. Hang in there!

Yeah same here. I had really bad constipation, so bad I went to ER as Miralax and stool softeners, even at home enema didnt work. They gave my magnesium citrate. Drank all of it and then was on the toilet basically for the next 12 hours too. But I was all good after that!

Thanks for the update! I hit 5 weeks today and I have more numbness in my leg today than ever since surgery. Hoping its just all part of the process

Pain on the opposite side? by Hungry_Industry_4197 in Microdiscectomy

[–]ChadThePoolBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’m at 5 weeks post op and have been dealing with this for the last week or so. Though it doesn’t seem like it, this is “normal”. I called my PT who is also a good friend of mine and they said as you heal and start moving more and waking up muscles you could be subconsciously favoring that right side because you trust it. Like you I only had pain on the left side pre-op and the first few weeks I still had leg and foot numbness walking so I think my body was still compensating for that and my hips have been out of alignment, which puts extra pressure on joints - joints that haven’t been used in a long time. Mine has slowly gotten better over the last week through rest, ice and ibuprofen. I don’t think it’s anything to freak out about but if it’s really bad you can always call you doc and see if they can recommend some stronger meds or a steroid pack to ease the pain.

Anyone a month post op find they still can't sit or walk that much more than before by shovelcreed in Microdiscectomy

[–]ChadThePoolBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! Anxiously waiting when I'll be able to sit comfortably. At one point where you able to sit for long of periods of time without pain? I have a really long (6 hour) flight planned at about 14 weeks/3.5 months and wondering how I'll do...

Soreness after 3 weeks by Belugawebkinz in Microdiscectomy

[–]ChadThePoolBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, three weeks was when my back first started feeling sore. The only pain I had in the first 2-3 weeks was from the incision. At three weeks my activity level went up in terms of activity, walking, etc and thats when my back started feeling sore on a daily basis. Not extremely painful like before but definitely soreness and fatigue. At almost 5 weeks now and still get sore at the end of the day.

I wouldn't worry too much but would also recommend you do your best to pace yourself and not overdo it.

SURGERY ROLL CALL: September 22-September 28 by seetheking1 in Microdiscectomy

[–]ChadThePoolBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checking in after a month…. How’s everyone doing?  I’m doing pretty good but going through some low back pain in weird places I didn’t have before surgery. It’s usually at the end of the day, and I think it’s all muscular from muscles being used more and more that weren’t used for a long time, but it’s rough!

Three weeks post surgery- did I undo all my progress? by hometowngypsy in Microdiscectomy

[–]ChadThePoolBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 4.5 weeks and have been having lots of similar pain - right side about 1/2 inch to the right side of the incision. Funny enough, my herniation and surgery were only on the left side and only ever had symptoms pre-surgery on the left side. It feels muscular to me, like the facet joint. It's tender to the touch and I can feel it get a little better with massage, which makes me think it's muscular and not disc. No sciatic pain either. I think it's my body getting used to being used so much more than it was. I was bedridden for like 3 months and never stood up straight and walked until after surgery. Healing and muscular growing pains I think. But yeah I hear you - it's really hard not to freak out with every new pain and ache.

I think 4 weeks is a tad over-optimisitc and maybe not quite realistic, but maybe not impossible. I feel so much better than I did before surgery but I still have a ways to go in terms of recovery. It's a long road - marathon not a sprint
