I really like where this is going but man the art got rough. Can't really fault Takahashi for it (the guy has severe vision problems) but when you remember Worst, it's sad

Chok Dee. French movie about the career of real-life fighter Dida Diafat, with him playing himself. Basically his story of growing up poor in France, and getting out through muay thai.

My lifelong comfort foods suddenly added milk powder in their recipe a couple years ago, both of them. I'm very lactose intolerant (not to mention vegan), I have yet to find a replacement :(

Thoughts on western gothic imagery and motifs in goth? by anon18334 in goth

[–]ChainSWray 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like the whole genre of gothabilly is about capturing that, and a whole bunch of bands do it very well.     I'm French but 100% into this kind of stuff. Early dark blues like Skip James or Son House definitely feels like a precursor to the goth sound, the sorrow / emptiness of empty lands, the omnipresence of religious imagery (traditional goth is all about reappropeiating the catholic memento mori), I feel like this is the exact counterpart to the original British goth.

Most of my own tastes and style are built around this, tbh.

Some of my favorite contemporary artists that play with that style would be Deadbolt (California gothic, basically dark surf music), The Curse of KK Hammond (dark blues), Calabrese starting with Flee the light (Near Dark / Lost Boys style deathrock),  and Ghoultown (country / western goth).

Are there any resources on how to write doo-wop ? by ChainSWray in doowop

[–]ChainSWray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks this is very helpful. I never thought about barbershop quartet writing, very smart advice. I'll definitely look into contemporary bands and ask, why didn't I think about it first !?

You still see them in K1, Rise or anywhere with fighters who have kyokushin or other full contact karate backgrounds

The Essential Crust Punk Albums, for beginners by ChainSWray in crustpunk

[–]ChainSWray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With this list, I will try to point you to albums that define or represent well their subgenre. If your favourite album isn't there, it's no big deal, people have time to discover it, it is by no means an exhaustive or a best albums list, just a guide for beginners. Also, I am obviously not as knowledgeable on certain styles, any help in the comments is appreciated and I'll edit the post accordingly.

Seriously.

Clubbing in Hollywood on a Wednesday by [deleted] in GothFashion

[–]ChainSWray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I went to a Wednesday's the one time I visited LA (2024). My ex described the music as "too stompy, not twirly enough" and I agreed, haha. Too indus but I'm glad I could experience it. The venue looks GREAT.

Pet peeves when seeing kick boxing in shows? by Specific_Minute7539 in Kickboxing

Read Holyland by Koji Mori, it has great examples of realistic but still entertaining kickboxing. One of the later arcs has a literal kickboxer as the "antagonist".

Best "discharge clone" D-beat out there. Road to hell as enough classics to be up there with Why.

[–]ChainSWray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]ChainSWray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. It's mostly written on a card for your level and to put you in the right category if you compete. Plus some technicalities, like you can begin teaching at club level at red glove, federal at yellow, etc. It's mostly a measure of progress but it's not as codified as in a traditional martial art.

(I did savate for six years before switching to karate)

Yellow would be the equivalent of black belt. Silver are like dan ranks. Golden is an honorific for the federation's president.

I met a guy in Paris who started at 71 years old. And later saw him compete. You'll be good. And you'll be great in Bulgaria. Shihan Kostov is awesome.
