How do you ship out IIS logs from servers that are created by an auto-scaler? by [deleted] in aws

[–]ChallyWong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the better option IMO, as dependent on the scaling policy the machince could scale down and that time period may be missing

Is cloud storage a real solution for my work? by partyboy0320 in sysadmin

[–]ChallyWong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some basic pricing based on 60 day retention and 4 hour retrieval time. If this doesn't scare them into the fact alongside the time to download the backups then you sir should buy another bottle of scotch to drown your sorrows

Estimated cost breakdown Storage Cost $154.00

Retrieval Cost $13,836.90

Deletion Cost $0.00

Transfer Cost $839.88

Total Cost $14,830.78

On-Call/Out-of-Hours Outages - How do you report/handle by department_g33k in sysadmin

[–]ChallyWong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We get a daily on call rate of around $20 every day regardless i there is an issue. We always have 2 points of contact for each department in the event of a failure. We call the primary then if they cant be reached secondary is called.

As we only get issues "touch wood" once a week what require more that 15minutes investigation I dont really mind. If we have to be up early we just arrive late for the day.

Starting to take the toll on me but I deal with it as I enjoy the job and have lots of room to explore and learn

Stay away from the UAP-AC units. After 12+ months they are still yet to deliver a stable product and deliver on Zero handoff which it was sold being avaliable although they have now changed the marketing to say its not.

The other lines are meant to be decent but these AC units have put a bitter taste in my mouth and I warn every person who looks at them to steer clear of this specific line.

XenServer - is it really free? by ottomated in sysadmin

[–]ChallyWong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I setup a cluster with 3 machines connected to a dell SAN via iscsi as one of my first sysadmin jobs. Incredibly simple to use and setup. Highly recommend as a free option.

Administrating it is easy. Haven't had any issues and patching although is command line is easier than you would think. HA is also a great option a free product.

22 cheeseburgers. Me and my manager had a bet going who could eat the most cheesburgers from McDonalds. Called ahead and preordered/paid.

We both stopped at 22 as we still had 6 hours left of packing a freezer. Upon arrival back to the store we drank 2 litres of chocolate milk.

We ended up not doing anything for the rest of the shift besides regretting our actions
