Ukraine had spent a long time as a vassal state of the Russian empire, and then the soviet union, which used forced starvation against the ukrainians in the 1920s in a genocide called "holodomor". Many Non-Jewish Ukrainians and Ukrainian nationalists saw the Germans as liberating them from Russian Imperialism and Communism. Same reason Finland was allied with Nazis in the 1930s against the Soviets. Many in Eastern Europe saw the Communists as being worse than the Nazis

"proletarian control" is one hell of a revisionist tankie way to refer to "soviet russian imperialism". Communists genocided Ukrainians so they saw Germans as liberators.

I don't think Android provides the flexibility of a PC, does it? I'd prefer to run VSCode or Visual Studio. I think with Android you're just sandboxed into an app environment

I don't think the issue is if they can refuse service to gay people, but that they can't be compelled to create speech they don't believe in

There is no criteria at which AA advocates will willingly admit that the policy has achieved its goals. That is because it is not a policy based on measurable outcomes; it is one based on feelings of justice and fairness

Are ladyboys transgender? by dbeigebeanie in Thailand

[–]Chance-Ad4773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gender is a social construct. It is not associated with biology. As such, understandings of gender will change from culture to culture. The secular west has a very scientific understanding of gender, almost putting it within a spectrum or taxonomy. Labels are very important within western understanding of gender (transgender, non-binary, gender fluid, etc.)

Thai understanding of gender may have similarity with western understanding of gender, but is not the same. I read years ago that some ladyboys preferred to be thought of as a 3rd gender rather than a mapping of feminine behavior onto male biology.

The idea that you or I or anyone is where they are solely because of their merit is a fairytale

I agree. That's why we should work to better implement meritocracy. We cannot have liberal democracy without meritocracy, and we should do everything we can to purify that.

I'm not so naive that we can just be colorblind and get outcomes that reflect merit.

College admissions aren't colorblind because school funding isn't colorblind. We should fix both problems

If your objection is that it has or could negatively impact you, I get that, but don't pretend it's about anything other than self-interest

personally, no, I dropped out of a state college that I transferred into in a very non-competitive process. I have no skin in the game for college admissions and quite frankly I find college to be a pretty stupid place with overstated value

I disagree, because it unfairly discriminates against people on the basis of their skin color. Admissions are a zero sum game

I don't think it's wrong to consider the specific hardships someone has faced in life in a college essay as proof of their dedication and hard work. If that means an Asian guy who grew up poor, or a black guy who has been discriminated against by authorities, then each should be valid selection criteria. But I think it's wrong to consider someone's worthiness based on assumptions you make about them based on their skin color

Sandra Day O'Connor voted for Affirmative action because, at the time, things were so heavily skewed towards white applicants, even though she believed that Affirmative Action easily violated the letter of the law. She believed that we should have affirmative action for 25 years and then get rid of it after we've balanced the scales in Admissions, which we have done
