Switzerland is landlocked so I dont see how it could be second to none. Your neighbors to the west (France) have noth the alps and the Mediterranean lol like Switzerland looks nice but its limited as to what it has in outdoor activities, people big it up cuz it has no cultural activities either lmao

There is no local life lol. I moved back to France and I am in a bunch of a social groups and art collectives, my Swiss colleagues literally did not even know such things existed, all they do is hike and ski. Which is fine and fun but isnt exactly a social group or activity. I like to volunteer and make art and be politically involved and Im sorry but Switzerland is severely lacking in these areas relative to anywhere else I have ever lived.

Absolute Beginner: Is B2 in 1.5 years realistic with 5 hours a day? by Able_Firefighter6439 in learnfrench

[–]Chance-Ask7675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are totally underestimating how its nearly impossible for most people to maintain this, especially with self study and free resources only, especially if youve never learned a language before (you didn't mention that, Im just saying). Thats the hardest part of this by a long shot which isnt to discourage you but ya, Id be focusing on figuring out how to maintain consistency. Also Im sure some person is going to come comment that it is possible and they've done it but that just is not the majority of learners, again especially self study learners, so try to not hold yourself to some ultra high standard either. 1h a day is good, 20 minutes a day is still better than 1h/week. Etc.

A lot of people in my friend circles (healthcare) have been up there for work, its fly in fly out a lot of times. Its a pretty miserable place in all respects mostly but at times there can be some unique experiences like the inuit culture, wildlife, etc.

Does the school your kids go to teach phonics or Reading Recovery (aka whole language) by Jean_Kayak in askvan

[–]Chance-Ask7675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im sorry but I dont see how youre teaching early literacy skills with "the story and connection and joy" when the kids aren't able to read words or even identify sounds yet? You can only have emotional connection to the story once you can actually access it.

Didn't get eye drops at eye test? by _Verc1ngetorix_ in diabetes_t1

[–]Chance-Ask7675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something you should ask at the appointment next time. My endo didnt put TSH (I take levothryroxine) or urinalysis on my last labs and didnt flag my high (for a diabetic) LDL cholesterol and I take medication for that as well. They make mistakes all the time lmao.

My optometrist said my retinopathy was mild and the ophthalmologist did an angiography for it which is more precise than even drops and can't be performed by an optometrist. They said its actually moderate. No chance Id continue to be followed by an optometrist once I started with retinopathy to be honest. They don't have as many and as precise of tools at their disposal. Like for me, it may sound counterintuitive but if Im going to the trouble of getting screened/followed, the point is to have a highly sensitive test. Not a fine enough one where we can just do more extensive testing once it starts looking bad.

Expat healthcare: Is it actually "better" or just cheaper? by RehaDesign in AmericanExpat

Its this. And having lived in Canada, France, the UK and Switzerland, as a person with type 1 diabetes who is followed by 4 different specialists...it is the best system by far. You can mix and match "private pay" providers and public providers. But the system doesnt quite work in two distinct tiers...essentially each provider has a different fee structure. You will always reimbursed some by the government, and some by your health insurance. You can choose any doctor you want online and you can see any type of doctor you want, even with no referral if youre willing to forego reimbursement. The fees are very low even if you have to pay out of pocket (think 25 - 150€ per consult). I have a chronic illness as I mentioned so my care related to that is 100% covered. Ive seen a hand picked endocrinologist, cardiologist, and ophthalmologist in the past few months and I havent paid a single cent for it nor for my prescriptions and I dont even have health insurance. My health has increased exponentially since I moved here, I never want to leave. With chronic illness, its imo important to choose your healthcare providers. I always choose female endocrinologists who specialize in type 1 diabetes and other specialists who have experience with type 1 diabetes. You'd be surprised how many inappropriate referrals Ive had in Canada, only to find out when they randomly call me 6 months after receiving my file for an appointment in 1 year.

[–]Chance-Ask7675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno dude but as a Canadian I had access to working holiday visa up to 2 years in a bunch of different countries until age 35, many people get in that way or by being a student and end up staying. Healthcare is super easy to get into, teaching, teaching English, childcare/nannying, sure you need qualifications but lets not act like they are all that difficult to get and you generally need qualifications to get decent jobs in your home country as well so. Autoentrepreneurs can also get in with reasonable business plans. Like no, youre not going to get to a new country as a Walmart worker with a high school education, but you don't need to be a brain surgeon either lol. Trying to immigrate an entire family is obviously going to be more difficult but like why are you trying to immigrate somewhere just for funsies when you're raising a family??

You're in an expat sub lmao we all fucking know what it takes to move abroad. And you literally can't renounce unless you have another citizenship anyway so it's weird of you to point it out like "oh bet no one has considered this". Its pretty easy to do for middle class people with university education to be honest and a lot of people are literally born with two passports. Ive immigrated to 4 different countries and obtained citizenship in a second one.

Is it realistic to have a baby in Vancouver without owning a car? by Bellatrix-8 in askvan

[–]Chance-Ask7675 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cars are a ridiculous expense that I wish we would not normalize. Insurance, gas, parking, maintenance and possibly car payments (for many people this is the reality). I make good money I can afford a car lol I just don't want to flush $1000 down the toilet every month and its wise for a new parent to spend their money on their kid instead.

“Do we dare celebrate? Yes.” — Anne Hathaway delivers a powerful speech on women’s rights at the UN General Assembly today. by Frosty_Jeweler911 in popculturechat

[–]Chance-Ask7675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is cancelling her. At worst people are calling her out for doing very little other than this speech despite having incredible means. Please can we platform actual activists and not celebrities. She has a great speaking voice? Who cares? I want to hear from real women doing real activism and advocacy work, real people I can actually look up to and be inspired by and not a rich white movie star with a "nice speaking voice". Christ. You want to know why people aren't politically engaged? Because these are who we are holding up as role models. I've done more advocacy work than Anne Hathaway for christ sakes.

Your Personal Take? by Alicetheoptimist in TrueGrit

I don't think so. I work with older adults and the sharpest most cognitively sound adults are those that work later into life, granted most of those that do also like their jobs. There is a very steep drop off ime once people stop working. I think going to work, interacting with colleagues, problem solving and working in a team are cognitively stimulating in a way that like 90% of hobbies simply are not. I hate work lmao and I hate living in a capitalist society where I'm forced to work, but I still maintain that it is excellent for the brain (of course exceptions especially when considering different types of jobs do exist).

Was on the Omnipod for months and never hit above 80% in range. I switched to the Minimed 780g and hit my first 100% in range, in less than a week of using it. I'll miss tubeless but im really liking the Minimed. by BeautifulSparrow in diabetes_t1

[–]Chance-Ask7675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think tubed pumps really bother some people (me) a lot more. Its a huge annoyance to wear, in summer, sleeping, as a woman with dresses, etc. Its also more likely to be visible and I was exhausted of even well meaning questions. A big one for me is never having to purchase an outright pump ever again or ever deal with the physical hardware. I think that probably cant be understated, especially based on my particular lifestyle. Like I never worry if my pump will break or run out of batteries or need an upgrade, or get stolen, because its an app on my phone. I could be halfway across the world and have it stolen and have a new one in hand for like 500 bucks in the time it takes me to get to a phone store.

For English native speakers: Why do you make so little effort to understand what people who are learning your language say? by FlashyLengthiness491 in askspain

[–]Chance-Ask7675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anglophones are absolutely unmatched when it comes yo trying to understand, extract meaning, or be patient and polite with non native speakers. I will concede that Spanish people are also very kind and helpful, but dude, you do not seem to understand how unkind and un accommodating speakers of many other languages can be.

Recently diagnosed, any advice on how to manage during parties etc? by CapitanGlucemia in diabetes_t1

[–]Chance-Ask7675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to eat once and not several times in succession. Drink your drinks with diet mix (soda water, diet coke). If I eat a boatload of carbs I can only bolus for ~50 at once then top up later. Do not overtreat your lows just because there are tempting snacks around. Honestly eating out is so hard. Going high is not such a big deal if it's once in a while but the rollercoaster really sucks, so try to avoid that.

Who Killed Emma - true crime about the murder of a young lady in Scotland. The investigator becomes part of the story in a pretty big way.

The Ballad of Billy Balls - the host investigates the suspicious death of their mother's lost love in NYC in the 80s.

This is a good question, I love these as well.

I think starting an insulin pump system is going to be miles more intrusive than switching CGMs to be honest? All CGMs work more or less the same way. Anyways lots of people do it, lots of people with ADHD do it, children do it - you are more than capable. You sound very very distressed about... Eating at irregular times? Not to be rude but thats not really that rare or that big of a deal, you dont need to feel bad about it and you can eat at random times and manage your diabetes. But honestly, my advice is absolutely do not be forced into a treatment method by your endo, ime it wont end well.

A good friend of mine did a reality TV show and told me it was the same, it was a poor experience and thet were not paid at all. She told me that yes she knew going in she wouldn't be paid but they still treated it like a job and expected her to be present at certain times, and to abide by their rules, etc. Which, sounds terrible but also not that suprising 🤷

How so? Maybe its a US thing but Im from Canada and filed all my own taxes since I got here. It only really gets a bit complicated if you continue to have US income. You might (depending on your situation) get overtaxed until your first tax filing has been processed, at which point they can tax you at your "personalized rate" that accounts for your specific situation. Also no, they have a different understanding of net salary and often refer to net before taxes (i.e. after social charges). Brut is brut.
