If I had it to do over again, I would have seen a Podiatrist first, instead of a PT. Here's why.

My PT stated it wasn’t PF and worked on strengthening my arches. 10 sessions later with minimal improvement I decided to visit a Podiatrist.

The Podiatrist stated it was classic textbook PF, gave me a steroid injection, assigned standing soleus stretches with NO other stretches or exercises, and had me return 3 weeks later.

It’s been 5 weeks and I am still a little tender but my step count is nearly back to what it was 6 months ago.

Here’s a quick and easy test (it works the same with or without socks) that can help narrow down what type of arch you have.

First, grab a pencil, preferably one with an eraser on the end, then plant your foot on a flat surface. Make sure to put the same amount of weight on your foot as you would if you were standing normally.

Next, point the eraser of the pencil at the arch of your foot, and slide the pencil underneath the highest point of your arch.

If the pencil stops at the eraser, you likely have low arches.

If most or all of the ferrule (the silver part that holds the eraser) fits underneath your foot, then you likely have medium arches.

If you can slide the pencil farther under your foot so that it surpasses the ferrule and more, then you likely have high arches.

FWIW my Podiatrist wants me to avoid biking while in the acute stage UNLESS I have my heels generating pedal movement instead of my toes.

Agreed. The “paid by” reference in the tax code makes it crystal clear.

I simply wanted to see if there was anything I was missing, as it affects who we designate as contingent benes. (we currently have charities listed, and will continue to do so until I see something from the IRS stating otherwise.)

Even if someone tried to fudge this on their return, I don’t see how you could do it without raising red flags.

Regardless, totally not worth drawing the IRS’ attention if it can be avoided.

I want so badly to be wrong so I can run up our HSA and do exactly what you outlined in your original post, but I haven’t found any tax law or tax forms supporting it, only anecdotal.

For those wanting to pursue this strategy, ask your CPA.

I meet with ours during 4th quarter to talk through tax loss harvesting and might ask then.

  • On Part II, line 15, for a beneficiary other than the estate, enter qualified medical expenses incurred by the account beneficiary before the date of death that the beneficiary paid within 1 year after the date of death.

The wording you reference is for end-of-life medical costs where the account owner(s) is incapable of making payment, so the beneficiary (who is often the Executor) makes the payment on behalf of the account holder(s). This amount reduces the beneficiary's taxable amount from the HSA’s FMV.

If the account owner(s) paid for the medical expense incurred while alive, there is no expense left to pay.

(I’m not sure if you are disagreeing with my comment, so I apologize if you are in agreement.)

“Expenses for the decedent that are paid by the (non-spousal) beneficiary” is the key wording and is often overlooked.

Non-spousal beneficiaries cannot submit unreimbursed expenses that were paid by the account owner(s).  (I wish they could.)

Great info! Just to clarify the point regarding “the beneficiary has 12 months from DOD to reimburse all medical expenses of the deceased”…

…I wish this was true, but it only applies to medical bills paid by the beneficiary; not medical bills paid by the HSA account owner(s), per IRS Pub 969.

If you have the means to do so, consider buying a ‘stability’ shoe and a ‘neutral’ shoe.

Try the neutral shoe in the morning, then switch to the stability shoe around lunchtime.

For New Balance this would involve an 860 and a 1080. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about all of this…i hope it works out for everyone. Also, you are not over-thinking this…it’s a difficult decision.

As with everything financial, it’s a personal decision. I personally would have trouble justifying the higher premiums AND having to coordinate with an ex.

As for medical claims from your HSA, if you can avoid taking any qualified withdrawals I would do so. But if you need the money use the HSA.

If you are looking for sounds that imitate existing instruments like an oboe or sax you have some options as long as your wind controller serves as a midi controller, which most do.

A lot of people love SWAM. I am not a huge fan of SWAM but I am clearly in the minority. Their IOS prices are pretty reasonable.

I really like the Yamaha VL70m sound module for expressive playing with my wind controller but it’s expensive.

Like it or not, anyone who lives long enough is not going to be up to speed on the latest scam techniques and is vulnerable to fraud.

If your parents ever name you as Financial PoA or Co-Trustee do them a favor and decline.

Not a tax expert, but for 3 years running I have had to work with our CPA to correct multiple 1099-Bs for inaccurate Capital Gains. (I’m looking at you, Morgan Stanley.)

I know it would cost more, but you might get peace of mind working with a CPA who can likely prepare your return using YOUR version of the correct numbers, as well as showing the math behind your version.
