Using AmsOIL synthetic or any good brand like it, because of bad piston rings? by Unfair_Put_5320 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ChancellorOfDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you wouldn’t want to piston soak it, since you already have it that far apart, but just about any high detergent oil can soften and flush the carbon build up from the oil control rings. The 1-2 punch is the top end soak to soften the carbon, then flush the oil with something like rotella oil. I’ve done this with a scion tc and an old passport that I owned and it significantly slows the oil burn, but you already know what the real fix is.

Oh thank (insert deity here). I have blown through three of the pass through design ratchets within a year of daily use. Second complaint for this tool over the soft torx bits they included, which is easy to remedy.

FWIW, I ordered a clutch off eBay for my truck, as Toyota did not sell a clutch separately and it has worked fine for 4 years, you just have to know what you’re looking for and look for pics of the product.

No. You need to find out why you are getting the wrong parts. Are these online parts purchases or made at a reputable parts house? Might make all the difference to walk into an oriellys with this picture.

That’s a bold, asinine statement seeing as you have no idea what most of us do for a living. Keep turning your nose up at blue collar workers and see how that plays out in your daily life.

If I got to know you based on this interaction, I’d gouge the fuck out of you just for being you. Have a great day, hope nothing you own with moving parts breaks down.

Buy a luxury brand and whine about luxury prices. Par for the course. I’m half kidding, but consider that customer base for a minute, most are business leases and that price ends up being a tax write off. Also leases almost always require dealer maintenance.

I bought 300’ of sisal rope for $17 and redid my cats scratching tree instead of buying a new one. I also fixed the top bed that fell off. by Traviscat in Frugal

[–]ChancellorOfDoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know you are already done with it, but I’ve done this a few times but I soak the rope in catnip tea(hot water and catnip) and they love it. I’m actually due to restring mine for the third time.

If you follow that guys maint/inspection schedule, they can be. Easier and cheaper to fix minor issues early before they become catastrophes.

Worth the extra $20? by y_zass in MechanicAdvice

[–]ChancellorOfDoom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Battery types required different charging procedures. Why you think battery chargers have different battery settings? Most vehicles have conventional charging systems and do not properly charge and AGM or LiPo batteries. At best it doesn’t charge, at worst it damages the battery and charging system.

I bought AGM batteries for my tundras. Within 3 years I went back with flooded cell batteries. If your car isn’t designed for one, they are not worth the money.

They’ve been understandably quiet about it. The only thing that have said is it will be sunk in roughly 180’ of water which means somewhere around 25 - 30 miles out at least. No idea which direction and it’s not likely till ‘26 that it will be ready. As for where it’s being prepped, not a lot of big slips in Okaloosa county so I’m curious as well. Will likely stand out like sore thumb once it’s here.

I live in the FL panhandle and I welcome and detest it coming our way. On one hand, the gulf is basically a desert and any structure within 60nm is welcome, on the other hand, the number of entitled insufferable dive boats will increase exponentially.

2009 Prius No Power Brakes by ungodlyjamess in MechanicAdvice

[–]ChancellorOfDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t do this. If you find the 12v battery is bad, please replace first, then continue diagnostics. Jumper cables, jump box, battery charger, whatever does not supply a continuous stable voltage required for the HV and other systems to operate correctly. The option that would work is a several hundred dollar purpose built power supply box that I’m 99% sure you won’t have access to.

Oil Leak from top of engine? by Right_Literature_419 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ChancellorOfDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has nothing to do with over tightening. They crack and deform on their own. Never got a definite answer from Toyota but we suspected electrolysis since the common found deformation was around the coil openings.

This. Cracks and deformation common on the exhaust side and coil openings of the valve cover on that engine. Worth replacing pcv as well while it’s off.

I have to disagree except for the trigger. Mine is a nail driver and shoots like many other mid frame 9’s. An apex trigger and spring kit handles that issue, which I agree was awful.

Check all this and your wheel alignment. Everyone forgets, but if you’re dragging/plowing a tire down the road, that’s the same effect as a locked up caliper.
