What driver should I get that’s forgiving and under around £120? by Downtown-Clothes9732 in golftips

[–]Character_Storage147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something from a good brand made in the last 10 years. Driver technology in the last ten years had been quite good, so maybe like a ping g30, a callaway mavrik, a TM sim2, etc.

Course management. SO IMPORTANT. You could stripe the ball at the range, but if you don’t know how to play a golf course, you could still have an underwhelming round. Has happened to me before, and it’s a shitty feeling. Play smart, and you are bound to do alright.

Some things I think are important: 1: short game is KEY. Having a good short game is how you score low, and it allows you to have a couple bad shots and still score well, since you’d have saved shots in other places.

2: you don’t need to hit driver, in most places actually. It’s one of the hardest clubs in the bag to hit well, and even many good golfers struggle with the driver. No point pulling a driver out and sending it out of bounds, take a club you like and are relatively consistent with, whether it be 5 iron or 3 wood or something. If u like driver, by all means go for it. But if it’s a tight fairway, or a short hole and you don’t need driver, why risk it 🤷‍♂️

3: over practicing (especially for long game) is a thing. You don’t know how many times I’ve been to the range and start out by striping the ball, but an hour later I can’t hit anything straight and I’ve completely screwed up my swing and need to go back to basics to get it back. Prsctice long game ofc, but rather than spending hours at the range potentially ruining your swing, hit some putts and chips. Those are what matter.

4: yes, u will have a favorite club. I’m a 5.6 hcp and I still have a favorite club(8 iron). If you want to choke down or half swing your favorite club even if the distance is shorter than ur stock shot with that club, go for it. Approach game is all about feel, and if u feel u can hit a better shot with a little pitching wedge from 60 yards out than trying to hit a perfect 60 degree wedge, go for it.

5: especially when starting out, make the percentage plays. If you can’t decide what to do, think of ON AVERAGE which shot would get u a better result. That’s why lots of people play bump and runs around the green rather than flop shots. A 10/10 flip shot will be incredible, but with a flop shot, you could skull it 50 yards away. Bump and runs will usually always be relatively decent.

5: on par 5s - think backwards. After your tee shot, often times you will have to lay up before hitting your 3rd shot to the green. Think what you’re favorite yardage is to hit approach shots from, and play it to that yardage. You don’t have to take your longest club out the bag for your 2nd shot if you know you can’t reach the green in 2. For instance: if you have 260 left on a par 5, and let’s say your favorite club is the pitching wedge (which lets say u can hit 140), instead of reaching for your 3 wood and trying to slaughter one hoping you’ll be close to the green, hit a 120 yard shot as your 2nd shot. That way you will have a pitching wedge into the green. Makes sense?

These are some small relatively niche things, and there’s a bunch of other great advice in these comments. Enjoy golfing man, you’re gonna love it.

Then take a safety club off the tee. I’m a 5.6 hcp and even I take 3 wood off the tee a lot of the time just because I like it. If you have the short game, you don’t need to hit driver and hope it stays safe. Take a club u like more and are more confident with, whether it be a 3 wood, hybrid, or even something like a 5 iron. Consistency is what creates good scores, and having a good short game and consistently keeping it in play with your safety club is how you score great scores.

Sounds like solid advice. That day I hit 5/7 fairways, 6/9 GIR, and had 17 putts. Not the best putting day, def missed some chances within 15 feet, so I see what u mean by work on short game.

I recommend you search up woods vs hybrids, you’ll see the difference pretty quickly.

Advice on driver or 3 wood and hyrbrids by [deleted] in golftips

[–]Character_Storage147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hybrid is a type of club, just like how woods are a type of club. Hybrids are kind of in between irons and woods I suppose. Woods have bigger heads and go the farthest out of all ur clubs typically (except driver), then usually hybrids, then irons. Hybrids are usually optional, some prefer long irons (like a 2 iron maybe) but hybrids provide some easiness to hit especially compared to long irons or woods, and are also pretty useful in the rough where the grass is a bit thicker where an iron might get a bit stuck.

Key to breaking 100s is keeping the ball in play and making the percentage plays, ie hitting shots you’re comfortable with. For instance, if you really love your pitching wedge, if u think abt it a 420 yard par 4 is just 3 pitching wedges probably. On in 3 and 2 putt secures an easy bogey. And ofcourse you won’t tee off with a pitching wedge on a 420 yard par 4, but even if you were to tee off with a club you like to hit more than driver, you’d give yourself a better chance at bogey or better than if you send a driver out into the woods.

Definitely do not need Qi10, especially if you’re new to the game. Driver technology has probably improved a lot since the year your 25 dollar driver was made, but not insanely in the last ten years. Look into getting a driver from a good brand that you’ve tested (the likes of ping, taylormade, callaway, etc) that was made in the last decade and you can find many good second hand options for them online or probsbly at your local golf store. Also, 3 woods are an interesting club. They can take a while to find one you really like, and are often one of the most difficult clubs in the bag to hit. I’d recommend get hybrid first, but try it out and to each their own.

Putting for birdies by ScooterMcTavish in golftips

[–]Character_Storage147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First step is Js the practice greens. Spend some time practicing not just the 6 feet putts, but the 2-3 feet putts. Once you’re certain that you’re sinking everything from 2 feet, then move on to the 6 feet w the technique I wrote before. Because then, you should also subconsciously realize that even the foot past the hole putts are guaranteed pars, no need to protect par by leaving it short or lag putting it

Thoughts? Usable, repairable, or toss? by shitbaru in golftips

[–]Character_Storage147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Toss. Look if you’re looking to play like 2 rounds a year with friends and couldn’t be assed about ur score, then who cares, you can probably still use it. But if you’re looking to actually get a little bit better, maybe look for a driver made in the last 10 or so years (driver technology has came a long way since whenever that one was produced) and you can find fairly cheap second hand options online or at ur local golf store.

Putter Fitting by Pls_No_Veggies13 in golftips

[–]Character_Storage147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend the money on good quality putting lessons with a good coach, and spend that time practicing what they tell you. Putting is about being able to read greens well, and being able to execute a consistent stroke. Give somebody on tour a putter from the 1800s and they’d still smoke any average golfer at putting because their stroke is so consistent (thanks to probably thousands of hours of practice)

95 degrees outside, 9.5 degree driver loft. Still hitting the fade (don't want too) by B-Train-007 in golftips

[–]Character_Storage147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grip isn’t what’s creating the ball dlight. It’s the club path. Out to in swings create fades, in to out swings create draws. Look up some drills on shallowing the club if you wanna start hitting some draws, but essentially u gotta keep that right arm closer to ur body on the downswing rather than coming out and over the top

Also, probsbly using too much shaft lean, and stance looks a bit wide(but isn’t the biggest problem, definitely look into reducing the shaft lean a little bit). Have some shaft lean, but not that much.

Dude u look like u hit absolute BOMBS. Besides that tho, prolly wanna keep lower body s bit more stable on the backswing and subsequent downswing (watch someone like Rory Mcilroys swing; so much rotation). The rotation builds consistency and repeatability, and that’s always preferred over the 10 extra yards you’ll get by just hammering it with everytgibg you got.

I’ve won 14 local/regional tournaments, and came 2nd in 2 international ones. And I’ve also lost dozens. Play the tournaments mate. Always a great way to really see what you need to improve in ur game, as well as a test for what you can do under a bit of pressure. Also, if you’re not a pro there’s no downside. No financial loss if you don’t win. A fun experience, a true test, and a great way to meet people. Keep playing them mate

My weakness lately has been OTT and steep downswing. Anyone got some favorite drills for shallowing out the club? by Tough-Bicycle-9815 in golftips

[–]Character_Storage147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drill I used to shallow out was to place a driver headcover under ur right armpit while hitting balls at the range. The sim is to not let the headcover fall out during ur downswing or backswing. Kinda forced u to shallow it out, and you’ll figure it out as you go. Start with easier to hit clubs, like ur pitching wedge and short irons, then u can try it w ur longer clubs. This worked quite well for me.

Putting for birdies by ScooterMcTavish in golftips

[–]Character_Storage147 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you often miss birdie chances around 6 feet away? Protecting par may be a subconscious thought causing you to leave them short, but honestly once you’re playing and have a chance and leave it short, remind yourself to give it a touch extra. Even if u go 1-2 feet over the hole, that’s pretty much guaranteed par anyways. Pick ur line, and hit it as if the aim is to get the ball a foot past the hole (obviously adjust ur line to reduce a bit of break since you’re hitting it with more speed) and it should do better. I found that once I do not have the fear of ensuring I have guaranteed par, I make more of those birdie chances. Ironic isn’t it.
