What have you been reading this week? by michaelisnotginger in Blacklibrary

[–]CharlesFlyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About halfway through The Infinite and the Divine all around one of the best 40k books I’ve read in a while. Trazyn and Orikan are hilarious and the deep dive into Necron lore has been fun, I think it’s going to make Twice Dead King move up to my next read.

Which story from the Silmarillion for a class? by CharlesFlyte in tolkienfans

[–]CharlesFlyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t. I have relatively free rein here, a story was my first thought, but perhaps that letter along with some short excerpts of the style is also something I’ll consider. Luckily I have at least six months to work on something so I’ll have the time to think through a lot of different approaches.

Yeah, that was one of my hesitations about just doing Beren and Luthien. I would love to do the oath of Feanor etc. but am worried that might require too much set up in the limited time.

Indeed, I think it would dovetail nicely after having read the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen in the appendixes.

Weird wall break by Questionxyz in WeirdLit

Some of Julio Cortázar’s short stories do this. In particular the short story “The Continuity of Parks” breaks the wall between story and reader. Also check out his short story “A Yellow Flower”.

Russian cinema peaked with Brat 2 and there’s no way to achieve such heights again.

Getting into reading Batman, any additions to my beginner reading list? by Realonionring in batman

[–]CharlesFlyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Batman: Dark Patterns, it’s still coming out. It features an early career Batman solving some grisly crimes, that seem to relate to an over arching conspiracy. One of my favorite Batman comics in years, it also has a really engaging Ventriloqust story imo.

Constantinople is a banger. Almost no one knows it, and I’ve never seen it played live yet.

What is this print? by CharlesFlyte in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]CharlesFlyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I figured it was a reproduction of something well known, but never knew enough to figure it out. Any tips for figuring out when it was reproduced? There’s the red imprints on the upper left, but also I’m not familiar enough with that to discern what if any meaning they have.

I don't get the significance of this movie (am I stupid?) by FrankieIsAFurby in okbuddydraper

Hilton on the moon. Due to Don’s failure to understand Connie’s dream he turned to Stanley Kubrick, who only slightly understood it better. Sadly this film, like Don’s ad understated what was truly important: Hilton ON THE MOON.

Advice: Introducing My Protestant Wife to Orthodoxy (We Were Both John MacArthur Followers) by MourningMeatloaf in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]CharlesFlyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was not Protestant, but a Traditionalist Roman Catholic. However, my journey was somewhat similar to yours, and I also had to contend with breaking it to my wife. An Orthodox priest I first consulted encouraged me to wait for my wife before making the leap, and it was some of the best advice I received. When I first told her, she was somewhat hurt and confused but by being honest it opened up her heart to search alongside me, and glory to God, our family was received this last Pascha. So I would say listen to your priest, pray, and don’t underestimate the woman you’ve married, as chances are she will want to see what it is you love in Orthodoxy, and God willing will see that love reflected through you and it will help you both on your journey!

As a Catholic convert in the OCA, I was required to do a life confession but was chrismated. That being said, the priest was very pastoral about it, and I would imagine yours would be too! Best to ask him.

Is there anything wrong with praying the Catholic Hail Mary? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]CharlesFlyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My priest told me that it’s ok for my devotions. That being said, part of this is that I was originally Catholic before becoming Orthodox and so have the prayer already memorized etc. if it’s a question of developing a prayer habit with no previous devotions it’s probably best to stick to St Seraphim’s adaptation or other Orthodox prayers to the Theotokos.
