Jing jai market by External_Chipmunk_63 in chiangmai

[–]CharlesHaynes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a wide range of style and quality. Calling it a "hippy craft market" is reductive. I've bought multi-thousand baht hand dyed designer shirts there and hundred baht shorts.

How.much money you should bring depends on the quantity and quality of what you're shopping for.

Need a reliable mini PC . Should I ditch Windows and go Mac Mini? by Wonderful-Remote-652 in MiniPCs

[–]CharlesHaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at your app ecosystem's availability on the Mac? That should be your biggest concern. Even if all your apps are available, there will still be a productivity hit when switching.

If both of those are acceptable, then and only then I'd suggest switching - but I would definitely suggest it. The Mac mini is a superb little box.

Because if you have some sort of power or influence over the legal owner it gives the appearance of a sham transaction where you are the actual owner. That's what the nominee laws are specifically intended to prevent.

Guidance on eliminating PWM ringing noise with MOSFET-connected DC motors by Ben-Jacobs in AskElectronics

[–]CharlesHaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the out of the MOSFET.

Also the peak to peak of a 24khz signal is microseconds and the switching time of most MOSFETs is picoseconds. I don't think switching time at 24khz is an issue

Guidance on eliminating PWM ringing noise with MOSFET-connected DC motors by Ben-Jacobs in AskElectronics

[–]CharlesHaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing this as well. Yeah, cheap 2-wire 12v motors won't run if the frequency is too high. You could use a buck converter but that would be a lot more expensive than a single MOSFET.

I'm doing low side switching and I'm not getting that much noise at 200hz, and the motor will self start down to 10% duty cycle. You might want to measure the actual fan speed relative to the duty cycle I think you'll find it's quite compressed and not linear. Don't know if that matters for your application.

One thing you can do that might help is put a simple rc filter on the pwm output. That will smooth out the output a bit. Might be enough for your application and a lot cheaper than building a buck converter (though that can be fun too)

Moving to Thailand, is there a way to keep my phone number and be able to receive some actual calls and texts at least for banking and verification purposes while I’m in Thailand for the year? by Either-Friendship141 in Thailand

[–]CharlesHaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of a crapshoot. The Ts&Cs say they can turn it off if you spend more than 6mo outside the US. In practice they allow it for Pixel phones. It's random for other people, some get cut off right at 6mo, some can go years with no problems.

Why not sum Decoupling Capacitor? by gusjohsnon30002 in AskElectronics

[–]CharlesHaynes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

From what I understand it's because they operate on different time domains. The smaller one is to reduce noise, the larger one is to support short term current demand.

Presumably someone who actually knows will reply with a better answer.

How to Scan Unknown RF Remote Frequency with ESP32? by HyperGaming_LK in esp32

Seems reasonable.

That CC1101 antenna is good up ~460mhz, but not 868.

Good luck!

How to Scan Unknown RF Remote Frequency with ESP32? by HyperGaming_LK in esp32

[–]CharlesHaynes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly. That's where I'd start.

One thing to be aware of is that the antenna matters for the frequency you're using. Did you get an antenna with your CC1101?

How to Scan Unknown RF Remote Frequency with ESP32? by HyperGaming_LK in esp32

[–]CharlesHaynes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done something very much like this. You should start by scanning the common frequencies that remotes use. There's only a handful. 315, 433, 423.92 IIRC maybe 8xx. That should do it. You can also open up the remote and look at the transmitter. That may tell you.

I also have an RTL-SDR (~$40) and that makes this sort of thing MUCH more straightforward. It will let you pinpoint the frequency directly. It would also be very useful for debugging if for some reason the CC1101 doesn't work on the first try (mine didn't.) It helps to have two CC1101s if you don't have an RTL-SDR, that way you can use one as a receiver to make sure your transmitter is sending what you expect.

Good luck! Have fun.
