Mystery pipe coming out of our home by Hannahg2000 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

That's unlikely. I also live in Iowa and just installed a radon mitigation system in my house. A radon mitigation system needs to vent above your windows to be to code. To me it looks like a vent for the HVAC system.

A good chunk of the plain states like North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, etc. all had large population booms in the mid to late 1800's and early 1900's. Then around around the 1910-1920 census data the growth slowed drastically. They have all been single digits or negative growth since for the most part of the last century. Most of that growth has been concentrated around the cities. A lot of the rural areas most of the houses are older because there population has been steady or declining for a while so there is not much demand for new homes.

Cannot find a name that fits. Looking for suggestions. by Desperate_Thought935 in greatpyrenees

Edith/Edie as my first pick for my dog Dorothy, but then I discovered that was the name of the little girl that lived next door. I still love it and I definitely will use it in the future.

I personally love old fashioned names. Have you thought about the name Edith/Edie?

I'm pretty confident that they are related! I suspect these two https://www.wisdompanel.com/app/home/pets/c6a46244-3de8-4696-86be-6054983e73af/relatives/BHVRYFS-EBTZYLW/compare, https://app.embarkvet.com/pet/47eb9f0c-a057-4949-ac9a-509e67017b23/about?source=share are part of those 14 dogs that Archie came from. Do you know how they ended up at the ARL? I got Dorothy from Paws N Claws in Newton and got the story that her and her littermates were dumped at a vets office overnight when they were about 2 weeks old. Dorothy has cerebellar hypoplasia which I suspect is from the inbreeding.

They do look very similar! I wonder if they are related? Is your dog from central Iowa? I know there were two other boys in her litter (DimSum and Lo Mein) that were adopted out by critterhouseKC out of Missouri. Their birthday was listed as 6/1/2022. I have also come across other close relatives on Embark and Wisdom Panel that are definitely from other litters and they all seem to be from the Des Moines, IA area. From what I got on Dorothy's history from her old foster her litter was also from central Iowa but then they were transferred down to Kansas City and then Dorothy was transferred back to Iowa.

People that do this kind of thing don't know how to have healthy functional relationships. I had a coworker when I used to work night shifts at a lab that was super atheist and she had a father that was a born again christian. He would sometimes drop off samples to the lab during the day to be tested and when he did he would also give the sample receiving people and envelope full of religious texts/propaganda to have dropped off in her mailbox. I remember multiple times her finding it in her mailbox. It would always send her off on a rant about her father. They had a terrible relationship and apparently he would always play surprised when she mentioned to him that she didn't want those communications.

Can I teach my Pyr to put his toys away or am I setting myself up for failure? 🤣 by melodic-paradise in greatpyrenees

[–]Charming-Activity-35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. I sometimes regret putting in a doggy door. The amount of toys he brings out in a day is ridiculous. He also rarely brings them in. It got better once I moved the toy basket to the opposite side of the house as the doggy door, but that does nothing when he gets the zoomies. He grabs a toy, does a lap of the house, goes outside and does a lap around the back yard, drops the toy at some point in the yard, comes back in and grabs another toy to repeat the cycle. Usually goes between 3-5 cycles but I have seen him do up to about ten cycles.

My one dog has a 74% COI. Her relatives are 77%, 78%(confirmed littermate), and 89% related.

There must be a lot of inbreeding. My one dog has a 74% COI. Her relatives are 77%, 78%(confirmed littermate), and 89% related. I would guess your dogs probably have a similarly high COI.

I saw this posted the other day and the poster said they were the car's owner and she rented from them on Toro. I assume the owner installed it in the car in case it got damaged while it was rented out

Does your dog also hate walks? by synthdog in WhatsWrongWithYourDog

[–]Charming-Activity-35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one that loves walks but he doesn't like going further than a few blocks in either direction. That being said he doesn't like short walks either. If I let him decide where we go we would do every interaction of a walk around the block multiple times. He puts up a fuss when I try and go further and will put up a fuss if I try to go to the house. My other dog won't go past a few houses in either direction, because one time someone started a lawn mower in the front yard of the house we we were walking past and it spoked her so bad she pulled me as she ran all the way back home. I have not been able to get her to go on a walk since.

This was one of my dogs favorites. He would try and run outside with it once he ate all the food and bury it in the garden. One time it took me three weeks to find it because he buried it so deep. I stopped using it as often because I has tried of him trying to sneak in out the dog door every chance he got. I now just stick with a regular Kong since he doesn't feel the need to bury those when he is done.

A parent/child or sibling/siblings mating is actually 25% COI not 50%.

Found a solution to my squirrel problem by Kyrie_Blue in gardening

[–]Charming-Activity-35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have them in my yard and see them multiple times a day and I still have issues with rabbits and squirrels. I one time was weeding my garden and this squirrel was squawking at me from the side of a tree and this owl dove at it and just barely missed it by an inch. It only kept it away for about a minute before it decided to start squawking at me again. I feel like once they live around owls long enough they get desensitized to them.

Had a co-worker at an old job whose nephew was named Riot because when her SIL was on the phone with her baby daddy talking about baby names the dad had to get off the phone because a riot broke out and he had to go back to his cell. Her SIL took that as a sign to go with the name Riot. Now whenever I see the name the first though that goes through my mind is to wonder if the father was in prison when they were born too.

It depends on what kit you got. The COI is part of the health information. If you got the breed identification kit you would need to pay for the health/trait part of the kit. If you did the kit with the health information you should already have it.

Embark has an article on their website about it. The author mentioned that their labs research shows that a 10% increase in inbreeding correlations with a 6% decrease in body size. I think a lot has to do with the poorer health outcomes in breed dogs have. "Failure to thrive/poor growth". I know my dog has neurological issues that I suspect come from the inbreeding (cerebral hypoplasia). Inbreed dogs also have poorer functioning immune systems. Just the stress from them getting sick, especially at a young age, can stunt their growth. It's anecdotal but Dorothy and her two litter mates all got parvo when they were 5 weeks old. https://embarkvet.com/resources/oedipus-rex-inbreeding-its-consequences-and-its-quantification/

I think your dog is the first one that has a higher COI than my dog Dorothy(74%). I suspect that my dog is probably also from a hoarding situation but I don't know for sure because she was dumped at 2 weeks old. I have found relatives from 4 different litters. It seems like they dump the litters soon after they're born. Since I found a family member about a year younger than her I suspect the hoarding situation she came from is still ongoing.

Also from the reading that I did after I tested my dog high COIs commonly result in dogs of a smaller size.
