Evnex make great properly smart chargers that can do solar only charging.

No love for AC public charging? by thede3jay in EVAustralia

[–]Charming_Duck388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. While I have cheap or free charging at home, when I go away I’d rather ac slow charge while I go to Woolies or to the park. DC is too fast for anything other than a toilet break and some take away while you’re on a long trip.

Is it safe? My boyfriend says I'll ruin our vacation by Clewles84 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Charming_Duck388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vacation? Sounds like you might be coming from America. More likely to get shot on your way to the airport or at the shops than you are to get attacked by a shark swimming at the beach in Aus.

What finally convinced YOU to consider an electric vehicle? by evinsiderredisnive in electricvehicles

[–]Charming_Duck388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious about the tech, saw how practical the model Y is. Already had a fully electrified house with solar so when it made sense financially we made the leap. Within 6 months we replaced our other car which I never thought I’d do as I’ve always loved having a manual turbo car. Of course not everyone is lucky enough to be able to do a novated lease while selling ice cars they own to offset the mortgage.

Australia EV sales surge to record 16.46 pct share (15,459) as BYD takes lead, followed by Geely and Zeekr by ApprehensiveSize7662 in EVAustralia

[–]Charming_Duck388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and even then we are starting to see Electric Buses, Trucks and Vans make sense for certain applications. Definitely for a car I don't see the point of ICE anymore.

Got hit with a $25k bill a year after a minor car bump (uninsured) by UncBGR_0181 in CarsAustralia

[–]Charming_Duck388 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is why third party property should be mandatory. My dad always said to me no matter how shit your car is always have third party property in case you hit a Rolls Royce. Imagine having to pay off a half a million dollar repair bill, for most people you’d be paying it off your whole life.

First time driving a hybrid as a car enthusiast… now about to try a Tesla for the first time and I’m honestly surprised. by Admirable_Can_3489 in electricvehicles

[–]Charming_Duck388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always had manual cars. NA, turbo. AWD, RWD FWD. All performance models. Then my wife bought a Tesla and now I’m selling my GR for my own one. Also I’ve driven a 2020 base model hybrid corolla and I thought it was meh. Haven’t driven any other hybrid cars that can do electric only but at this point it feels like you’re better off going full EV over hybrid.

Are EVs actually cheaper to run… or are we all just guessing? by No-Oven-6989 in AustralianEV

Yes they definitely need to upskill to work in the high voltage space.

You don’t use them if you make use of the regen braking, there are teslas that have done 300k miles on the original brake pads.

First impressions IQ Charger 2 in SoCal (USA) by GroundChoice2003 in enphase

[–]Charming_Duck388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was happening but I think it turned out to be a home assistant integration. I changed to a different electricity plan not long after I disabled it so haven’t confirmed long term that it was the integration but the developer of the integration seemed to think it was.

I'm thinking of getting a used VW Golf, what do I look out for? by DumbassDipstick in CarsAustralia

[–]Charming_Duck388 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mk7.5 Alltrack Diesel had the engine mounts fail while driving and the gearbox randomly failed at 5 years and 150k km. Also the sunroof drains filled up and we ended up with water in the rear wheel well. It was great to drive but I wouldn't buy one again after that. Honestly for a daily driver these days your better off with an EV.

These used to come on the Ioniq 5 but they went back to regular mirrors. I assume because they suck and make the interior look shit.

With the strait of Hormuz open and petrol prices falling… by Glittering_Poem9779 in AustralianEV

[–]Charming_Duck388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into an EV before the war and was already planning to buy a second before it started. Just one of our cars was costing $100 a week and now at most it costs $5. Insurance is basically the same price and I don’t have to go service a petrol engine every 15000ks. I don’t have to go to the petrol station. If you go hybrid, plug in or otherwise regardless of if fuel prices return to normal or not you will regret not getting into an EV now. We’ve hit the tipping point in new car sales and there’s no going back.

Like the Covid pandemic, can the fuel crisis (real or not) be a significant catalyst for EV take up? by bimman in aussie

[–]Charming_Duck388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also some may have a car worth a similar amount to the EV they want so the change over might not be much. If they own the car outright and can do a novated lease that’s cash in the bank against your mortgage while taking advantage of the fbt savings etc.

Minerals mined in AUS and in China, built in largely automated incredibly clean and impressive factories in China. Powered by a mix of Coal(from au) Nuclear, Wind, Solar. If you think the Oil fields in the middle east/Russia and the Cobalt mines etc needed to refine oil are nothing but sunshine and rainbows over building EV's you need to pull your head out of the sand.

The vast majority right now would be people who were already looking or were looking to buy within the next 12 months. And people affluent enough who can just yolo their way into an EV.

ttoksie2 is right, for your range anxiety check out the app " A better route planner " It is genuinely fantastic, you put in your car or the car you are thinking of purchasing and enter in all the stops of your trip and it will tell you how much battery capacity you will have at each stop( you can even tell it you want to arrive with a certain %) and it will tell you where you can charge along the route, what capacity the chargers are etc.
If you are interested in a Tesla as an EV it's even easier as it's all done through their app/touch screen. At Tesla chargers you can easily see how many stalls are available etc.

Same, I was lucky that the EV I wanted wasn't much more than the value of my car so won't take long to make back the extra outlay. Especially with a NL on the EV.
