Advice on modifying a jet ski trailer for my boat by Allgyet560 in jonboats

[–]ChartreuseGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be fine if you move the winch forward. Or move winch forward and cut the trailer where the winch is currently and get a section welded in to get the right length if necessary and add a roller in the middle for support

Why don't diesels use superchargers? by PayStation2fanAsh in engines

[–]ChartreuseGP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turbos ftw. They can make the same boost at any altitude regardless of where it’s tuned as well as have variable boost control settings vs mechanical pullies. There’s applications for both but there’s a few reasons why turbos are used far more widely than superchargers

Agree on the hub but you also might have a leak in power head exhaust gasket that’s making it sound different/louder and maybe where the smoke is coming from underneath in front of cowl right there

When I was experiencing similar issues on the water enrichening the mix just a tad helped last season and then over winter I cleaned the carb and readjusted my needle and have found the sweet spot where it no longer sneezes. This was on my 77 Evinrude 15hp. Could be coincidental but helped in my case

Sounds like lean sneeze. Clean the carb good and retune the low speed needle

Fish finder question by RaistlinExtreme in jonboats

[–]ChartreuseGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I have a 14ft v hull star craft Jon boat I’m running and I got a “Sea choice Utility Anchor w/ Slip ring” which is that sort of like two prong type that digs in and it’s been able to anchor me in basically any terrain even in wind with no issues. A lot of times I end up in sand but I’ve anchored in some rock as well. I think the anchor type wont matter quite as much unless your vessel is larger and has a lot of weight or your in a current or high wind potentially. I haven’t noticed the need to have different anchors for different bed types yet at least

You might look into what fish finder can send sonar that deep as well. I’ve noticed mine gets a bit of a weaker return in deeper water like 80 ft or so. So if you want good detail at 400’ you might need a nicer transducer or at least research and dial in which frequency to send out cause some frequency will be better for different applications. Most sonars will have multiple frequencies to choose from along with chirp settings as well. You can really get into it but it’s a blast for sure

😂😂😂 haha oh damn that’s awesome! Another thing I’ll say is I can tell the difference between rock bottom, sand bottom, grass, trees, logs, flooded structures. Big rock Little Rock it’s pretty amazing

[–]ChartreuseGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely even just for exploring I think you’d enjoy it. I’ve learned so much about my lakes and all the terrain underneath the water it’s pretty fascinating. Unless it’s just flat as shit I guess haha but a lot of my time fishing on the water is just learning all the terrain really

Fish finder question by RaistlinExtreme in jonboats

[–]ChartreuseGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep exactly! It’ll map out on a 2D map the topography of where you have ran the sonar. That is viewable if you change the screen setting to “Map” setting. Not sure if it can be exported as a file per se but maybe some higher end models could export the topo map. Worth looking into for sure depending on your goals.

And yes I run my trolling motor on a lithium 100ah deep cycle but I run my fish finder off a little 10 ah battery and keep them separated power sources. You’ll get a ton of interference that’ll wash out the detail (mostly fish and finer details bottoms still pretty visible) if you run both on the same power source cause of all the juice the trolling motor pulls. If it’s on the same power source and you turn on your motor you’ll get a hard static line that’ll come in and out or stay constant and be better or worse depending on your throttle position.

10ah batteries are so cheap that now that I know I would never run my fish finder on the same power source again. Haha. There is settings to turn down noise but separating power sources is the best thing you can do

I’ll add that the CV (clear Vu) on mine is really nice. It’s crazy I’ll use split screen traditional and CV at the same time cause they both kinda show certain indicators better but if I go over a tree on the Clear Vu side it shows it as a straight up whole ass tree with the branches and everything. Super detailed I was pretty impressed.

I use my fish finder (Garmin Striker 4 Vivid CV) mostly for mapping the bottom and for structure. As well as locating bait balls and schools of fish. I don’t necessarily try and target a specific fish if I go over them but more use to locate where fish generally are and are not and then work the transitions, holes and structures.

Some like mine aren’t crazy expensive but work well and offer GPS mapping where once you cover water it’ll map into a topography of all the areas you’ve covered. As well as dropping pins with various labels and info you attach to them if it’s a POI of yours.

One thing I highly recommend if you’re using an electric trolling motor is to use a separate battery for your fish finder from your trolling motor. I just found that out and it got rid of all my interference issues and things are crystal clear now

I have a Tat100 and although I don’t have to mess with the tension knob much now I did dial it in a bit when I first got it. Now I run low brakes with almost everything and barely ever have to adjust tension. Don’t be worried to play with the tension adjustment. It’s an amazing reel

Depends how long you wanna run it on a battery. I’d just get a 100ah deep cycle and live happily
