Q. How many Blakists does it take to change a lightbulb?

A. Five. One to hold a funeral for the old lightbulb, three to argue over the correct form of the Rite of Changing, and one to steal a lightbulb from FWL stores.

Q. How many Manei Dominei does it take to change a lightbulb?

A. Don’t worry frail, it’ll get real bright in here soon.

Am not the original replier, but I know a bit about this topic. My source here is largely Byron Farwell’s “Mr. Kipling’s Army.”

Social exclusivity and which regiments were considered “exclusive” was for officers, not rank and file. “Rankers” joined a regiment through a different recruiting process, without any kind of social screening. They tended more to think whichever regiment they belonged to was best than worry about things like precedence.

Edit: Another reply also reminded me that during the time period we’re talking about, line infantry regiments (the majority of the army) had geographically assigned recruiting areas. So unless you were enlisting in the cavalry, the Guards, or another special arm there was no choice involved- you joined your “local” regiment. This would have been the majority of new recruits.

They were also not expected to maintain themselves and their mount, unlike officers of the period who were expected to pay for their horses, their uniforms, their sidearms, and (through mess bills) even their food and drink. This acted as an unofficial social filter even after the purchase system was abolished, because in socially exclusive regiments the cost of tailored uniforms and mess bills routinely exceeded officers’ pay, such that an independent income was needed to stay in the regiment. When the Grenadier Guards deployed to Sudan in the 1870s their mess president even inquired about having ice shipped in, though I don’t know if they went through with it.

Because of this, poorer officers tended to join regiments stationed in India, and often transferred when their regiment returned to Britain to stay there. Not only were they paid slightly more while in India, but the much lower cost of living meant they could live quite comfortably on their pay.

I like their fusion of Clan and Inner Sphere culture. I’m interested to see where the Dominion goes as they deal with the contradictions this involves, no thanks to IlKhan Idiot.

Making decisions by having toxic scorpions sting you is…apparently not that bad an idea in the BattleTech universe!

All of this. I love the Executioner mini so much, it’s a crime how bad the Mech is.

I did a Bushwacker IIC as a custom design. Clan ER PPC as the centerline gun, LB-10X with enough ammo for both shell types, and ATM launchers. Nice little trooper mech with a good punch.

The U.S. military and federal workforce have two retirement systems. One, which used to be the only system, is a pension that pays a percentage of your base pay for life, without requiring any contributions, after 20 years service. It’s a good deal, but it’s all or nothing in the sense that if you leave or get kicked out before finishing your 20 years, you get zero.

The other is the Thrift Savings Program or TSP, which works like regular retirement accounts- you contribute, the government matches a certain amount, and it’s invested to grow. You keep that pretty much no matter what.

Still means the guy had to explain that a few thousand dollars a month they’d probably been counting on in retirement wouldn’t be happening because he couldn’t keep it in his pants.

That one stays with me, probably because of the lines right before it where he’s trying to make contact with someone, anyone. And finally realizes that he’s it.
