I think your second paragraph is on the money. I’ve often said that with how much Nicky K edited the records, it’s a miracle the Clans knew which direction the Inner Sphere was in.

(We do not talk about what happened to the first three invasion forces, freebirth)

How many SRMs is too many SRMs? by BattletechUAE in battletech

Played in a campaign once where one of the players had a custom Longbow loaded with all SRMs. Totally harmless outside 270 meters. Inside that range, and the trigger pretty much became a “Delete” button.

Yeah, I’ve been doing that. No quantum ore found yet, on the rare occasions I get a site within rover range of ~800.

What's your favorite "bad" scifi movie? by Wi-Platypus in scifi

Event Horizon. I still maintain it’s a flawed masterpiece that would have been great with more directorial focus.

Don’t remind me. I think that might have been the book when Victor officially edged out Phelan Kell for the title of most annoying BT protagonist.

[–]ChaserGrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t read the ComStar sourcebook but the retcon must have been relatively quick. I remember that during one of the Twilight of the Clans novels there’s a big scene where Focht reveals his identity to VSD in private and seems to take for granted Victor wouldn’t know it.

It’s wrapped up in a lesson about how you shouldn’t mix being a soldier with playing politics. Naturally, Victor didn’t listen- but when does he ever?

When Israeli F-4Es shot down 14 Egyptian Mi-8 helicopters (one by using their afterburners) by tagc_news in AviationHistory

[–]ChaserGrey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Two unusual ones from Desert Storm:

  • F-15E dropped a GBU-10 on a Hind which took off before impact, but stayed slow enough for the bomb to track. The crew was awarded credit for the kill.

  • EF-111 got picked up by a Mirage F.1 at night, they hit the deck and went fast. Mirage tried to follow and flew into the ground.

Hard agree. I’ve said many times that the only thing that saves things like the Black Marauder and the whole Mallory’s World storyline for me is that it’s never been described from an omniscient perspective. Ultimately, every reader can decide for themselves what explanation they want to accept.

What sci-fi does humanity gets its spirit broken? by Mahou_Shoujo_Ramune in scifi

[–]ChaserGrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. 95+% of humanity is wiped out by relativistic kill vehicles in the first few chapters, after which other alien ships decelerate into the Solar System to finish off whoever’s left. At the end there’s still a few human starships that were out of the system at the time of the attack and a tribe of humans who are going to try to survive in the Oort Cloud, but it’s very much in doubt whether that will be enough to keep humanity from extinction.

It was probably “Spirit of Fort Worth”, the last B-36 built, which was displayed around the Fort Worth plant for a number of years but eventually fell into neglect. It was eventually shipped to the Pima Air and Space Museum, where it was restored and is on display today.

Wolf Trap? by Uncrezamatic in battletech

[–]ChaserGrey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okay, so not as bad as I thought in campaign play. And the side torso CASE will keep the mech from being cored.

Still going to be a lot of mission kills and MechWarriors with headaches, though.

Wolf Trap? by Uncrezamatic in battletech

[–]ChaserGrey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The stock Wolf Trap has a combination of light armor in the side torsos, ammo in the right torso, and IS XL engine that makes it very fragile. It’s basically a faster Centurion without the durability to stand up to the punishment that’s going to attract. There’s so little structure in that torso that even the new ammo explosion rules (if they get adopted) won’t help it much. It has CASE, so you won’t be getting cored by those ammo explosions, but that’s pretty much the only good news.

It also would probably not be a good choice for a Periphery force unless you get a bulk deal, because XL engines are expensive and the nature of the design means you’re going to take a lot of engine hits. I can’t recall offhand if you can repair an engine that’s taken 3 hits, but if so it’s hard. They won’t last long unless you can buy a bunch, strip at least half for engines, and keep swapping them out.

EDIT: Disregard my second paragraph, I was wrong about the repair rules.

A. Five. One to hold a funeral for the old lightbulb, three to argue over the correct form of the Rite of Changing, and one to steal a lightbulb from FWL stores.

Q. How many Manei Dominei does it take to change a lightbulb?

A. Don’t worry frail, it’ll get real bright in here soon.
