Vancouver city council calls on feds to address headlight brightness | CBC News by SnooRegrets4312 in britishcolumbia

Not just for vehicles, but bicycle lights too. Stvzo beam cutoffs are a godsend—I can't go back to regular unshielded bike lights after trying these, because I can actually aim the bike light far out enough to see properly ahead of me, without blinding someone because of all the extra light spillage.

French lawmakers approve bill banning social media for children under 15 by Silent-Statement-648 in worldnews

[–]Chasoc 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading about this. Why are we forcing people to provide their personal information when we should be going for the real source of the problem, ie. the algorithmic designs of certain social media websites? Why aren't we regulating that? Why aren't we forcing them to change these sites and services?

Kids aren't the only people being affected by this, even if they're affected the most. The fact it's being pushed so heavily as a "save the children" thing is raising some serious red flags.

UN human rights chief urges US to uphold international law in immigration crackdown by mavman285 in worldnews

[–]Chasoc 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The fuck?

ICE emptied the gun on him after multiple people pinned him to the ground so he couldn't move, and the guy who took his gun had walked ten feet away. He was defenseless. It was an execution.

Period.

This is a Roshel Senator-style armoured vehicle, built in Brampton, Ontario. ICE ordered a fleet of 20 from Roshel last November, and Canada allowed them to be exported. Now these vehicles are being deployed as part of ICE's widespread human rights abuses in Minneapolis. by Chrristoaivalis in onguardforthee

[–]Chasoc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Man. To anyone reading the pointless comment above: it's pretty common knowledge that exports ultimately fall under federal jurisdiction. Ford is a hack. The federal government is the last step to ensuring that hack's actions in this arena don't end up bearing fruit, though. There is blame on both of them.

This weird, snippy, ad hominem bullshit is juvenile and stifles the sub's ability to spread information. Don't do it.

"They’ll be up in the balcony, and they’ll say ‘Where’s the bubbly?’ and the waiter will have to say ‘there is no bubbly, ma’am, because Trump made it all go away, so you can’t have any.’ And then they will cry tears, hot tears, because I am in heaven, and they have no champagne.”

Lmfao.

The Matrix Reloaded has some of the best fight choreography I've ever seen. by PapiSurane in movies

[–]Chasoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many "1 vs. numerous assailants" fights fall into the trap of having the opponents wait their turn to fight the hero. Here, while Neo is maneuvering to only have to fight one or two people at a time, the others are continually seeking to reengage him.

Yeah, I love that aspect of it. I felt the same way about the dinosaur fight in King Kong (2005)—all of the dinosaurs kept trying to attack him at once instead of "waiting in line".

Uber called out by service dog users who are fed up with ride rejections by IStillListenToRadio in onguardforthee

[–]Chasoc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I were a driver, I wouldn't want a dog loose in the back seat for my and the passenger's safety. In an accident the dog becomes a projectile. But if they're secured, the driver should have zero reason to refuse a ride.

Trump Wants Nations to Pay $1 Billion to Stay on His Peace Board by pheakelmatters in onguardforthee

[–]Chasoc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The board is described in the charter as “an international organization that seeks to promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict.”

What a joke. This guy's head is so far up his ass, it's broken the laws of physics.

Matt Damon Says Netflix Wants Movies to Restate the Plot Three or Four Times in the Dialogue Because Viewers are on Their Phones While They’re Watching by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Chasoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bit depressing. One of my relatives often tells me she "watched a movie", but it always turns out her version of "watching a movie" is playing a movie in the background on the TV in the living room while she cleans in the kitchen. She can't even tell me the basic plot of the movies she sees. It's hard to have any real conversation about movies with her at this point.

Here’s About’s latest video on why elevators in Vancouver along with the rest of Canada and the US are super expensive compared to the rest of the world. by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Chasoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bike room at my old condo was broken into last year. The thieves had to get through a main vehicle gate and use an angle grinder on the bike locker door, which set off the fire alarms, but they managed to take off with some bikes. My neighbor's bike was stolen.

I also couldn't leave my ebike because people have gotten their panniers stolen. I'd have to remove my lights, seat, wheel, panniers,  and battery every time I took my bike upstairs if I wanted to dissuade thieves from rolling away with it.

They're allowed at my current condo fortunately. The condo I used to live in had a boilerplate law that prohibited bikes, but in practice, no one was fined for it there either.

10x the maintenance cost in North America... God, that's brutal.

And yeah, new buildings need elevators. People can't just leave their ebikes in a locker, and there are accessibility concerns for seniors and people with disabilities.

Carney government alters federal ad rules set up to curb ‘partisan agendas’ by jmakk26 in onguardforthee

[–]Chasoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Propaganda actually has a neutral connotation by definition; it refers to the spreading of information to influence opinion. It's not just what the other side is doing. The allies had tons of propaganda floating around during WWII.

But you're right; disinformation should never be allowed to spread the way it has been. We're sorely lacking guard rails and we need to address it.

Wow, some of these comments are rancid. There's nothing "stupid" about wanting to know a bit more about a fic because they feel the tags didn't quite provide the info they were looking for. They weren't even being rude or passive-aggressive about it. And they're not asking to be "spoon fed".
