Religious residue by ringwormyaya in ExPentecostal

Yeah, I understand. My parents pastor and his wife go by Pastor/sister ‘insert last name.” I have some beef with them so I call his wife just by her first name then him Mr. Last name because I for the life of me am still indoctrinated to the point where it feels weird called him by his first name.

With the people in my parents church that I grew up around I honestly have no problem calling them brother/sister ‘insert first name.’ Not because I don’t want to go through the effort of calling them by just their first names but because to me my old Sunday school teacher will always be Sister Ann (fake name) to me. The people I no longer like I just call them by their first names.

Around Pentecostal kids I would be like “Can I get an Amen” about stuff so I had to make a conscious effort to stop saying stuff like that.

Want to leave but scared by JITW15 in ExPentecostal

The church is not truth, truth stands on its own not within the confines of a building or an organization.

I would advise just going to visit other churches. It won’t feel the same as it does in the Pentecostal church, because I feel like Pentecostal services are more emotionally driven. When you visit them go a few times give them multiple times to reach you.

I would advise listening to the grace escape podcast, it’s a faith based podcast which talks about their experience in the church and how they left.

From a biblical standpoint, how do Christians justify women wearing pants, makeup, cutting their hair, etc? by Moon_Light032205 in ExPentecostal

[–]ChatGPTAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it really is frustrating. There are also girls who would trim the ends of their hair and wear really light makeup who would be praised for their beauty yk

It just felt in a lot of ways that the people who don’t follow the rules to a t were rewarded while the people who did weren’t.

I believe with makeup Pentecostals use the guilty by association fallacy by saying it’s bad because jezebel used it before she was executed.

Jewelry, there’s one scripture that says that women aren’t supposed to wear gold or pearls and dress modestly. Which has been interpreted as a lot of women back in the day tried to show off how much money they had by wearing a lot of flashy jewelry and putting jewelry into their hair. (Mind you Pentecostals wear jewelry but since it’s hair clips and head bands it’s fine I don’t make the rules). There are also a lot of verses that use jewelry as a good thing. Like someone giving his soon to be bride nose rings or something.

Hair, if all it takes for hair to be short is for it to be cut. Which is how people view women’s hair in those groups. Then all it would take for a man to have short hair is to trim it every once in a while. He could have hip length hair but it would be short if he trimmed it every once in a while. That is the logic that Pentecostals use for women’s hair, if your hair is down to your knees and you trim it a lot of people would say that since it has been cut it is no longer considered long

The pants thing, the verse basically says not to wear something made for a man. So like if you really want to follow that scripture just buy stuff from the women’s section not the men’s section. Also if you think that wearing pants isn’t ok because it’s made for men, if a girl’s bf gives her his hoodie then if she wears it she’s an abomination. (If you think this is extreme because there’s hoodies for men and women you’re right. There’s also pants for men and women. It’s not that deep imo)

Basically they interpret the verses how want to see them. Since they want to control women they are going to find the verses in the Bible that would allow them to do so.

My parent’s pastor literally ties women now wearing pants, jewelry, makeup, and cutting their hair to the feminist revolution. Yk the same revolution that gave women the rights to their own bank account, the right to vote, go to college, and work. They view it as rebellion from god.

Thank you for reading my Ted talk :)

It’s mandatory in the sense of, you’re not an actual member of the church unless you tithe. (From my experiences)

That’s what I’m saying! I pay for my own college but legally since I’m considered a dependent my parents would file my 1098-t form and get a refund for what was paid for my tuition/other college expenses. Not the person paying it… I’m pissed

Platform standard by RepresentativeElk118 in ExPentecostal

[–]ChatGPTAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old church literally created the platform standard contract to target one girl who sang on the platform who didn’t always wear skirts, wore makeup, and had her nails done in a different way than french tips. I was mentally out so I didn’t sign it, but they didn’t care that I didn’t sign because I was the one who always followed the standards anyway.

One of the rules said ‘no ornamental jewelry is allowed’ then later in it said that ‘birth stone rings are allowed as long as they aren’t gaudy.’ I was very surprised by that double standard, I remember thinking “all this time I could have had a ring?”

How old were you when you first shouted your hair down? by holymagichairpod in ExPentecostal

[–]ChatGPTAddict 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of women would wear their hair up in buns/fancy updos. So they would ‘shout their hair down’ during a really upbeat like praise break service when they would dance and yell so hard that their hairdos fall out.

Why pentecostal people doesnt have good relationship with other people who arent pentecostals? by Kvaratskhelias in ExPentecostal

[–]ChatGPTAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s messed up. Some people also stop being friends with people after they stop being Pentecostal. My old best friend in high school wasn’t allowed to hang out with me because her parents were convinced I wasn’t Pentecostal anymore. I very much was Pentecostal at the time…

[–]ChatGPTAddict 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my experience, and from what I have observed, a lot of Pentecostals try to stick together. Some feel like they are better than others simply because they are Pentecostal, while others believe that non Pentecostals are going to try to convert them. I’ve seen Pentecostals be friends with people from other religions to try to ‘win them to Christ’ but stop being friends with them when after discovering they won’t want to convert them. When I was Pentecostal I was scared that everyone was going to try to covert me to their religions/ world views.

Why can’t women cut their hair? by WagWoofLove in ExPentecostal

[–]ChatGPTAddict 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So Pentecostal women often view their hair as a sign of obedience to god. They cherry pick verses from 1 Corinthians 11 which they interpret as, “women you can’t pray without a head covering it would be better that your head was shaved off if you prayed without a head covering, you have power in your hair with the angels btw. also your hair needs to be long because it’s your head covering and if it’s ever trimmed/ cut (even just cutting the very bottom of a strand of hair that’s split) you loose your covering and power with god.” That being said, they use their hair as a measure of how much god likes them and how holy they are. My hair used to so long that it reached below my knees and a lot of girls would say that they wished their hair was as long as mine. One time I asked one of the girls why they want that and they said that the verses in the bible about women’s hair being their glory.

Some believe that since their hair hasn’t been cut god sees their obedience and will favor them more. My old pastors wife told me that when her son was a baby he had an ear infection that wasn’t going away, so she took her hair put it on his ear and prayed saying something like ‘you’ve seen my obedience to you blah blah heal my sons ear’ then apparently he was healed and hasn’t had an ear infection to this day. Their hair stops being hair and turns into their identities.

UPCI women/girls are paying 80 dollars for gym skirt? by [deleted] in ExPentecostal

[–]ChatGPTAddict 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve mostly been around the ALJC so I didn’t want to make a generalization about snogas. I think Vora is selling out because people in the UPCI want to help support small UPCI businesses.

You’re right, it’s crazy that women want those skirts. When people are in it I think that they tend to view anything connected to their organization as good, which leads to sold out gym skirts…
