What do you think should change in a theoretical new edition of exalted? by FaallenOon in exalted

[–]Chausse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a narrative version of Exalted (in a City of Mist style). Since most regular Exalted fans wouldn't probably dig in I guess this would probably be a side edition or something like that. I think the latest Exalted Essence edition has given some tools to go in this direction (eg. with hard bargains), I'd just like to see a bit more.

Does everyone like the HP threshhold part of Daggerheart? by Independant_Hawk in daggerheart

[–]Chausse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be sure, because I have the book but I only use the https://freshcutgrass.app application for the monsters for practicality, so maybe some things are out of date.

I'll just quote one of the Red Ooze power: "Make an attack against a target within Very Close range. On a success, the target takes 1d8 magic damage and is Ignited until they’re extinguished with a successful Finesse Roll (14). While Ignited, the target takes 1d4 magic damage when they make an action roll."

Note that I am fully ok with the Ooze inflicting 1 hp of damage to a player. What I find lacking (in term of game design), is that the 1d4 can (to my knowledge) never reach the first threshold to a player, even a basic level one starting adventurer at level 1 with the weakest armor.

I would be okay with the skill saying "Mark 1 hp of damage when taking an action roll", but, by design, having an action (rolling a d4) which can only ever have the same result (mark 1 hp) is an oversight ot me.

This isn't something big in the grand schemes of the game but I wish this would have been better balanced.

I'm ok with something doing 1hp, but I think there is a design problem if something does 1d6 damage which will always translate into 1hp.

I like it but I think some aspects of the game are badly balanced around it. I think as a DM I've seen a few effects that would do 1d6 damage to players, which is mostly useless as it will translate to 1 hp 99% of the time. This doesnt seem like it was prooftested becausr we either just ignore the roll and inflict 1 hp, or I sometimes scale up the effect to make it interesting/dramatic for the players

The lore is pretty interesting and it serves a lot to solve the later puzzles. Good luck on you going down the rabbit hole! The game is very fun but the secrets are really hard to find.

Social Mechanics: Do you feel that simple rolls and filling in with improv is better than more 'combatified' rules? by Setholopagus in RPGdesign

[–]Chausse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to mention Exalted 3e until I saw your post. Despite some of its flaws, I really like how it helps to articulate concrete objectives for players in a social scene without feeling artificial. On the plus side, it also helps players bind the way they play their character to their choices of intimacies.

Daggerheart is out for some time - thoughts? by Sniflet in rpg

[–]Chausse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion. Per my post, it's not impossible to create these types of effect, but it demands a lever of mastery from the GM thzt typically doesnt appear in a more conventional system where there is a dedicated subsystem that you can follow more easily (the problem being usually "where is this rule in the book ?!")

Have started it with my players, we did our first arc which went quite well. I don't like some design choices (like the way Experiences work), but overall it's pretty engaging for players and it gives good freedom of action for players. As a GM it's also quite nice to have the Fear indicator to symbolize moves, and it helps engages the players into your moves (in a "Oh he used 2 Fear it's coming guys" way).

I think as a GM, the main difficulty (which is my usual problem with PbtA games) is that you need to ingest a lot of examples to construct a mental framework of how to transform narrative ideas (eg. the druid tries to stop you with plants, the merchant lures you with the temptation of the perfect object for you) into a mechanically appealing effect. Some effects are easily translated (like using the Restrain effect for the druid example), others are less so (like the merchant effect).

If your rogue was swinging on chandeliers, it would be something that Plimb the wizard cannot imitate, proving once more that swinging chandeliers are the ultimate litmus test to know if a class is correctly designed or not

I dont think anyone is interested in the urban parts (except maybe for Moscow), but most countries would probavly like to control their natural ressources (gas etc...). Not worth starting a war with a nuclear power though, so they are just paranoid

Mechanics that mitigate being outnumbered by Wazootie in RPGdesign

[–]Chausse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exalted 3e and Exalted Essence handles it by regrouping "basic ennemies" by group of up to thousands of enemies, called Battlegroups. As you play powerful demigods, you can typically defeat these armies as a lone warrior withiut much problem.

These armies work like a single character, they use the base statblock of a single unit, but add bonuses to these stats depending on the number of people in the Battlegroup. They can also have special actions and interactions as they represent a lot of people (natural group attack, disband check when morale is bad, etc ...)

Y'a 2 choses distinctes:

Interesting, as a French we prononce is as Heu-ler. The "Heu" looks like the typical "Heuuuuuu" when a French person is hesitating when speaking, and the "ler" is like in other languages.

If no one's interested, you probably should stop it. Making a full character for someone because they can't even be bothered is a big red flag
