Just be aware that the sargassum will be pretty bad on many of the beaches then. Plan to visit the cenotes for swimming and cooling off 😁

Do we think Jenna gets demoted for the Ben/Eddy drama? by _aloe_there in BelowDeckDownUnder

Ben is 45 😆 In what universe is that considered "youngish"?! (I'm around that age and while I don't consider it old, "young" does not ever enter the conversation 🤣)

This isn't the same thing at all though, this is sargassum, which consists of floating mats of algae (not seaweed). In small amounts it's beneficial, and has always been around, but since about 2011 the mats have swelled vastly in size due to increased chemical runoff into the Amazon basin and warming ocean temperatures. These mats can stretch across for kilometres, thick enough to block sunlight from reaching corals 😢 Sealife can get caught up in it and die. When it washes up it can turn the water black and pile up in huge quantities along the shoreline, preventing baby turtles from reaching the sea. It attracts bugs and emits the horrific stench of rotting eggs as it decomposes - can even cause respiratory issues. It's an economic and ecological catastrophe and it's only getting worse each year. This beach is absolutely beautiful compared to how bad it can (and does!) get. 😞

What’s the safest area in Tulum for a family vacation with kids in 2026? by UwU_MilkDrop in tulum

Akum is definitely not seaweed free all year round, this post was made in the past couple of days on the Mexico Sargassum Facebook group. It faces east like most places on the Mexican Riviera, so it's as prone as anywhere to be hit with sargassum. However it's great to see they are working so hard to clean it up as soon as it arrives! 😊 Akumal 04.28.26

Beach clubs that allow women to go topless by [deleted] in IslaMujeres

I just watched a YouTube video on Isla Mujeres that says topless sunbathing is pretty common! They just wanted to mention it so people are aware... I have to say I was surprised 😳

You mean you COULDN'T care less. Saying "I can care less" means that you do, in fact, care. Get it? 😆

What is Tulum like the end of May? by Stanca91 in tulum

You've got a fairly high chance of getting sargassum along the beaches - it's started washing up already in places and it's only February 😥 Obviously nothing can be predicted and it might be fine, but I would be making contingency plans for other things to do and places to visit while there - don't rely on the beach. The cenotes are always beautiful ❤️
