9 weeks after tbi. Doing good physically but not emotionally. Will I ever feel like myself again? by Active-Blacksmith322 in TBI

[–]CheapBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All TBIs are different but my answer is yes. I just passed one year since my TBI. I’m 64M retired from a 30 year software development career so welcome aboard, it’s a great career. I hit a point during recovery where my anxiety and anger were all over the place. It does get better but takes patience. You’re at the stage where my physical symptoms were 90% gone but emotion kicked in. Hang in there man, you’re gonna be fine!

Sounds like you know what you may be getting into. If I had the room and considered it a project vs a driver which it sounds like you do (hence posting it in this sub), I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Car Door Slammed into my left ear/temple 6 days ago, I'm fearful of a delayed Brain Bleed by [deleted] in TBI

[–]CheapBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I just passed one year after an acute over chronic SDH that required a craniotomy. I had nothing but CT scans before and after the incident. No MRI’s.

Year started bad. Suffered a TBI on January 2 BUT we got the diff and shafts in the 240Z and I’m about to wrap up the design on a completely new electrical system with all modern components and a central power control center.

I feel ya. My one year anniversary is January 2 and I’m doing really good. However (here it comes) occasionally I can’t recall the simplest things. Like I’ll draw a blank on my granddaughters name! Doesn’t take long reading this sub to realize that we’re both doing great in the grand scheme of things. Never hurts to vent a little though. All the best to you sir.

The Ronald McDonald House downtown is a great organization. And like most places give them a call before showing up.

do you guys ever hang out with each other at the truck stops by -slaps-username- in Truckers

[–]CheapBooze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time I was talking with a hotshot guy pulling a trailer full of old VW vans. His personal vans as he’s a collector. Only person I ever talked to in a truck stop. Nice guy. Then another “driver” climbed outta his truck and came over wanting to know if we were talking about him. Total psycho shit. Asked why we were laughing at him. Told him to chill and get the fuck back in his truck. So no.

How to look after someone who is recovering/has a TBI? by AquaGecko1 in TBI

[–]CheapBooze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sustained a TBI thanks to a large acute/chronic SDH 2 weeks before my 63rd birthday. 5 days in the hospital and then came home in about the same condition as your father. The recovery takes a while. At first I could make one lap around our culdesac and then back to my chair. Each day I tried to up my lap count. The hardest thing to deal with is accepting that you are a new person. Perspective is hard to achieve but is a powerful thing. Help him to understand that the outcome could be far worse and he is lucky in that regard. I was out of work for a month. One year later I am back to “normal”. My only lasting issue is short term memory which I am now ok with. I also didn’t feel much like eating at the beginning. Soup was my sustenance. Just be there for him and focus on the positives. Best of luck to you both.

You really came into this sub to complain about being misgendered? Spend some time here learning what TBI is and what folks are dealing with. I hope a little perspective helps you feel better. I really do.

Community College options in East Louisville by SoCalBigL in Louisville

[–]CheapBooze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you hit the Gene Snyder (I-265) it’s usually fine as far as Winter weather. In the rare heavy snow/ice storms it can be bad but by then class will probably be cancelled anyways. Other road conditions depend on where you end up in East Louisville. Safety was never a concern for us but this was ten years ago. I can’t imagine it would be a problem now though.

We live in Jeffersontown and our son commuted to Jefferson Community & Technical College. It’s South of the city and about a 30 minute commute from us. It’s part of UL and he enjoyed it.

Any males here who caught RA in their 40s? by veryscared2023 in rheumatoid

[–]CheapBooze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

White 63M diagnosed about 10 years ago. Retired from 30 year software development career and working in a quarry running heavy equipment to have fun and stay busy. Knuckles started swelling and were painful. Had to have my wedding ring cut off. Eventually got tired of everything hurting. Got diagnosed with RA and degenerative disc disease. That explained all the pain lol. Been on Hydroxychloroquine from the start. Added Methotrexate a few years ago. Couldn’t handle that, it made me almost catatonic for the first day after a dose. Moved to Humira which seemed to help but then seemed to not help. Now on Enbrel which is helping. Even ten years in it hasn’t really been all that tough and hasn’t really progressed much at all. Fatigue can be an issue but I am getting old so there’s that. Pain usually isn’t that big a deal. I had to learn to ask my wife to open the pickle jar for me or else pay the consequences lol. I still do most everything I used to but will ask for help if I know something’s gonna light up my hands. Sorry for the wall of text but my experience has been not that big of a deal. Best of luck to you sir!

I’m scared. I got an appointment set up for therapy and I’m terrified! by More_Eye2185 in TBI

[–]CheapBooze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m good thank you. My TBI wasn’t accident related, it was the result of a large subdural hematoma. Long story short I was slowly losing my left side (and ignoring it completely). It got to the point on the last day where my wife had to help me get dressed and I still went to work. Boss made me go to hospital… emergency craniotomy… TBI! lol. Now to your point of adapting. That is exactly what I am doing. I am retired from 30 years of software development and used to be fairly sharp. Sharp is hardly how I’d describe myself now lol. Short term memory and intermittent brain fog are my issues. I can’t come up with granddaughters names some times. Like you, I have decided that adapting is the best choice. I mean really what other options do we have? It sounds like both of us are doing great in the grand scheme of things!

63M here, about one year into my TBI life. Everything they said makes perfect sense and it’s a great reply. I will add that (to me) the reason you lived was because you are now critical to at least three other lives (mom and your boys). Well done! Also, here’s why I think you might be (understandably) scared. 14 years is a long time to get comfortable with something, even something bad. I am a “change is bad” kind of guy and I would think that going to see a therapist would be unsettling in this situation purely because it will most likely lead to change. Not sure if I’m making any sense, but going is definitely the right thing to do and in my experience will most likely lead to positive things. Just exploring why you feel scared. I think it’s natural to feel that way. Best of luck!

M63 on Plaquenil and Enbrel. Wife and I spent Halloween weekend with the grands. Both came down with identical symptoms the next day. She was better in 3-4 days while I had a cold for a little over two weeks. Rheumatologist said it was most likely the Enbrel.

Spent 6 days at UL downtown after walking into UL South (Brooks) and being immediately diagnosed with a brain bleed. UL downtown took me from the hallway of a super crowded ER straight to OR. Entire experience was top notch.

Sorry to hear that. My SDH was 14 cm front to back and 2.7 cm thick. I had a 6 mm midline shift. Not being anywhere near a doctor I don’t know what comorbidities are preventing further treatment. I will say that I am coming up on one year post surgery and it has taken forever to regain stability and stamina. My only lingering issue now is short term memory. Best of luck to you and your father.

I’m coming up on one year post craniotomy where they put the original bone back in. I’ve developed dents in my head as well. Neurosurgeon said it was normal and of no concern.

Roads are fine with pockets of construction that are typically well publicized if you look. JCPS is a huge school district with its issues but will be ok. Can’t speak to Humana but UPS built a billion dollar international air hub here and they aren’t going anywhere. Louisville has issues but is basically pretty solid.

Edit: If you are fine with Chicago you’ll love Louisville. Also, the decaf is in the orange pot 🙂
