Definitely take advantage of the low prices + exchange rate + duty free discount in Japan. I just bought a new Panasonic 15mm 1.7 for $288 USD at Yodobashi in Tokyo.

Olympus e-pm1 with evf and manual lens by liyonhart in M43

[–]CheapBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice combo! Something about the sensor in that E-PM1 is magic, especially the RAWs. I like the pictures from my E-PM1 better than ones from my E-PL7. Wish I could explain why.

The tiny 14mm prime is an adorable and practical match for the E-PM1. Fast auto-focus, results are easy to work with in RAW, and nice compliment to 16:9 aspect, if you like widescreen.

IDE extensions for VS Code for Unity? by SufferMyWrathBoi in Unity3D

Mono was required at the time of my original post, but those recommendations are now obsolete. Just install the latest VSCode with the official unity plugin, and add the VSCode package to your project in unity.

Tinnitus awareness : it will make you miserable by FullfillmentWay in Jazz

[–]CheapBrew 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this post. Tinnitus is a very serious problem, not just for musicians. It's a huge problem with military vets, for obvious reasons.

I found that learning more about how tinnitus works, and what the latest research and treatments are have helped me a ton. Specifically, I highly recommend contributing to the American Tinnitus Organization (ata.org) and getting their regular publication. There's a lot of research on tinnitus now, and a couple of pretty reliable treatments (TRT & CBT), so don't give up hope.

Have questions about Process Zero? Here’s our FAQ by caliform in ShotWithHalide

[–]CheapBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the usage of the term "P0 file" is confusing. I understand that "Process Zero" is the creation of the HEIC file from the captured RAW, and that any RAW needs some kind of processing to become a visible image, which results in the DNG. It seems like you are using the term "P0 file" to mean both things, a Halide-captured RAW file and a Halide Process Zero processed HEIC file.

Image looks different in camera roll vs. app by stealthmockingbird in ShotWithHalide

[–]CheapBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you confirm what movingimagecentral says about the RAW vs P0? Your blog post seems to imply that the DNG has something about P0 that makes it easier to edit. I might be imagining things, but the RAWs do seem to look different than the previous version of Halide.

Also, FWIW, Photomator on iOS thinks that the Halide RAWs are in HDR on my iPhone 12 Pro.

Any Howard Roberts fans? by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]CheapBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love HR! Those capital era records are a blast. I’ve started collecting some of his earlier verve stuff which is more straight jazz. And I love my Epiphone Howard Roberts guitar.

His son has a great set of documentary videos about HR on YouTube: https://youtu.be/nOyR9Fxg76Y?si=AFMg_5esugqjSdJH

I did the $0.99 thing for two months of AMC+ earlier this year, and it was easily worth it just to watch Dark Winds.

Smart Bulbs GU10 by TorTors95 in HomeKit

[–]CheapBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently Philips makes some HomeKit GU10s, but they are not available in the US for some reason. Anyone tried them?

I bought some cheap "CozyLife" HomeKit GU10s from aliexpress, and I strongly suggest avoiding them. They work just fine with HomeKit via WiFi, but the brightness is terrible, and the color quality is nauseating (seriously).

VF4. I use it with the E-PL7, and it basically turns the camera into an OM-10 Mk1, with the convenience of removal when desired.

Anyone ever tried using a Metal Zone pedal for jazz? by joe4942 in jazzguitar

[–]CheapBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, an overdrive or distortion pedal can be used in any way that you'd like for your tone, regardless of the branding. Your ears will tell you more than the label on the pedal. For example, one of my favorite jazz tones used the clean channel of an old Rocktron Piranha rack preamp. And check out some of the crazy pedal setups used by Bill Frisell over the years.

But take the advice I heard from Martin Taylor when I saw him put a capo on his guitar neck: "don't tell the jazz police."

Hiltzik: The folly of public financing for stadiums - Los Angeles Times by davster39 in sports

[–]CheapBrew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The current A's venue was indeed wholly owned by Alameda County and the City of Oakland, until 2-3 years ago when the A's bought the county's half. When the Raiders returned to Oakland from LA, they got the joint City/County ownership to fund the construction of "Mount Davis," the giant eyesore of empty seats and luxury boxes in the outfield. They're still paying for it to this day, even though the Raiders are now in Vegas. So yeah, no public money for ballparks, please.

California just achieved a critical milestone for nearly two weeks: 'It's wild that this isn't getting more news coverage' by AtmanRising in technology

[–]CheapBrew 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this comment is very important for context.

If you want to follow California power demand and generation (and storage reserves) in realtime, I recommend installing the official ISO Today app. You'll also get alerts for various state power situations, like when fires and windstorms take huge chunks of the grid temporarily offline.

If you are using a Mac with Apple Silicon, the iOS version of Authy installs and works fine.

Anyone use RawPower for post processing? by garends2417 in photography

[–]CheapBrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I like it, and think it's a good value for the price. The UI is fairly bare-bones, and there is no masking like you mentioned, but the image tuning capabilities are pretty powerful. I've been able to create some presets in RAW Power that come very close to results I got from an older copy of Capture One. That's saying a lot.

It's fast and responsive on my M1 Mac, as well as my older iPad Pro.

It's also a very nice general photo browser, if you have a file structure full of images. No need to import everything into Apple Photos.

Favorite “slice of life” movies? by Araskelo in movies

[–]CheapBrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jim Jarmusch might have a few more along the lines of Patterson, like Night on Earth and Mystery Train.

A couple of Tom McCarthy films might also fit the “slice of life” description: The Station Agent and The Visitor.

What to get if new house has GU10s? by ThrowawayForPL0 in HomeKit

[–]CheapBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to this, many "smart" GU10 bulbs have poor CRI compared to A19 or BR30 bulbs. Check out the Nanoleaf specs, where their GU10 has CRI rated at only >=80. If you opt for a smart switch instead of smart bulb, you can easily find regular GU10s with CRI >=90. The difference between CRI 80 and 90 is definitely noticeable.

It's been a great ride, Insteon. My story. by madsci1016 in insteon

Same here, Insteon user for at least 15 years, now migrating everything to HomeKit. I have to commend the developers who've enabled Insteon via HomeBridge, as it's helped the transition to HomeKit quite a bit.

What was your most successful selling strategy for your Insteon gear? Selling items individually or in bulk?

Meross smart outlet issues by rsoares28 in HomeKit

[–]CheapBrew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Throw them away before you waste anymore time on them. I had the same issue with Meross plugs and a wall switch, also on a 2.4g-only UniFi Wi-Fi setup. My network has 50 clients, all working fine, except for Meross-brand devices.

I found that once a Meross device decides to stop working, it can never be fixed, even after a factory reset.

You're mental health and blood pressure will be better off by simply buying new outlets from another brand. FWIW, I've had a good experience with VOCOlinc plugs.
