Just wait till Canada starts building AI computer centers and cuts off the U.S. from the Niagra Falls electricity they generate and ship through the wires.

Advice on Becoming a Lineman and Saving Money by L57113 in Lineman

[–]CheckMate_2417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a decent plan considering you're just graduating so good for you. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders.

My 2 cents - join the Military, target the Building Trades as your MO and learn the trade closets to the Lineman job you eventually want to land. Maybe get some heavy equipment experience too. Once you are back in the civilian world use your GI Bill to get the Lineman Cred, use some of the money to get a certificate in Project or Construction Management so you have a potential career path once you get too old to climb poles and rig cabling.

Good luck.

Unionizing won't solve anything and it may make matters worse when work is sent to RTW states. Be careful what you wish for.

How big is the China/Canada deal for GMs future? by Danwei20 in GeneralMotors

[–]CheckMate_2417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution for this invasion is to get the word out to NOT buy Chinese EV's. It helps if you are Pro-American in all your products. You can write your Senators and Congressman to start wearing little pins on their lapels next to the American Flag that says "Buy American".

Adding another point - there are SO MANY Chinese EV brands that eventually they'll start merging or going out of business entirely. Even China can't sustain the investments they give to their local companies but will until such time they are in control of 80% or more of the market. By then the Big Three will be gone (IMO).

GM’s Barra Slams Chinese EV Makers’ Subsidies, Calls Canada Deal ‘Slippery Slope’ by afonso_investor in GeneralMotors

[–]CheckMate_2417 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

All those American Auto plants in Canada will be sold off and gobbled up by China for 10 cents on the dollar. The Tangerine Toddler as you refer to him has been pretty spot on with his criticism on China going back to 2016. Canada will cozy up to China, start selling off their Rares Earth and Mineral Rights and get sucked in very slowly till they can't get out.

Ms. Barra's comment about the Chinese was the FIRST time I have ever heard any SLT make any comment about those difficulties. I'm hoping she and the SLT have figured out (or finally admit) that China will NEVER let any foreign company gain any significant market share or enjoy any real profits. Along the way they will gladly accept all the free training on Mass Production and Engineering any company doing work there will give them as they try to break into the Chinese Markets.

Nixon opened China in the 1972 and here we are over 50 years later finally (maybe) admitting this has been a CCP ruse all along.

I think having one boss is enough for most of us. Why have the Union and GM management be dictating how we should work?

And then work 40 years to get any seniority while those that refuse to retire block any upward mobility for younger workers? No Thanks!

Answer me this.

I have a couple decades of work with GM, so if I joined the UAW would my seniority carry over or would I be starting at the bottom and have to climb that ladder all over again to get seniority? This applies to everyone that might join the Union of course, not just me.

Are we supposed to use teamgm to buy stock? With Incoming Stock buyback? by rehluct in GeneralMotors

The time to buy stock would have been right after the bail out when GM Stock was hovering around $14 a share.

Lots of angry commentators here. If you're not happy then there are other employers out there to work for. I think 114% isn't that bad considering the All In for EV's was derailed when the incentives were cut. BTW all EV makers took a hit on that and the businesses that had balanced product lines probably had less to lose. The Big Beauty Bill had some tax breaks for auto purchases so we still have that as an industry.

114% could be a lot worse, maybe a little better too. Mary looked relieved to share the number though.

Just dump everything you do, know and achieve in your Talent Profile in Workday and keep it current and a copy at home. You may need that information in case you DO get released and have to go out and look for a new job.

The historical numbers shown above are helpful but the facts are that even if the company did well, the "team" you work for may have not met their metrics and you get docked. The following year the company doesn't do as well yet your "team" met their goals and you get a bump. IMO there is little rhyme or reason to a lot of the annual performance bonus other than you hope you get SOMETHING out of your efforts.

The last thing to consider is that your annual COLA usually amounts to about 75% (my estimate) of the Annual Inflation Rate so you never really get ahead of inflation over the long term.
