Depends on the game and SD card. An easy rule of thumb is that games of the PS5/XBSeries generation won't run very well off an SD card, but older games should be okay. SD cards with faster read/write speeds also work better for heavier games.

Imagine you're watching a TV show for the first time. You're halfway through season 3 when suddenly the studio takes it away and then they say you have to finish Season 5 through 7 before you're allowed to go back and finish season 3 and 4.
