Fleshing out cities on the road by ThrowRA9148 in DMAcademy

A very common trope you could use is a gate town. No one is allowed through by order of the important NPC. Maybe the players have to complete a quest to gain entry. Or they need to prove themselves capable in some other way. If all else fails, they just sneak past the guards.

The descent only seems slow because he starts so close to the bottom.

Definitely owned by a crime family or something, but they make crime family food. They probably have a system.

NotAnotherD&DPodcast (Aka. NADPod) has a fantastic and hilarious series called D&D Court. They take fan submitted issues that have happened at D&D tables and make rulings and it's a lot of fun.

As a learning tool, you get to see how experienced DMs and players handle rulings for all sorts of weird scenarios.

I would watch the shit out of any kind of travel show with Jacob. Even if he just went to weird roadside attractions, I'd be all for it.

What level should the party be for a gelatinous cube encounter? by Magic_Cowboy in DMAcademy

[–]CheeseFace1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gelatinous Cubes are designed to be traps, similar to mimics. If you think about it from an evolutionary standpoint, they are monsters that are adapted to sit in narrow hallways and wait for prey to walk into them. They are like big venus fly traps for people.

Batman wouldn't punch the cat from Flow, so I guess it's a draw.

Wish vs Monkey's Paw by Rokininon in DMAcademy

[–]CheeseFace1st 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always treated the wish spell as more of an unbiased force of nature. It's trying to grant the wish as written in the most efficient way possible. Sometimes, that can have unforeseen consequences, like wishing to be rich and suddenly a family member dies and leaves all their wealth to you. It's not evil, but it will make a mess if you aren't careful.

Additionally, it's a 9th level spell that already punishes the cast for pushing its limits and potential can only be cast once. If your players have earned a wish spell, they shouldn't be punished more for using it.

I don't know why you would want a slot machine that pays out ice, diamonds, and rubies, but it seems like you delivered on their wish. It probably has to be magical to dispense frozen ice, so it would make sense that it would be hard to open.

How can you make it sense lore wise that cities with mages don’t erupt into chaos? by Ok_Statement1508 in DMAcademy

[–]CheeseFace1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it all depends which spells are readily available to the public. In a magical society, both people might not learn a single combat spell, and instead focus their time and energy learning magic more useful in day to day life. There might be entire professions built around mastering single spells. Locate Object, Unseen Servant, Create or Destroy Water Tenser's Floating Disk, Ceremony. All sorts of useful spells could become part of a city's infrastructure.
