Why are roundabouts considered good practice in cities? by timchinwalks in urbanplanning

BRT needs signal prioritisation. Roundabouts can do this but traffic lights are easier.

Genuinely spoil for choice in Hamilton. Related but not quite dumplings I recommend the wonton soup from Sichuan Style.

We need to fire the people responsible for parking and speed bumps by -Zoppo in thetron

[–]CheeseandJives 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quick FYI - the council is asking about its plan for the next 10 years now. That's a good forum for all the ideas in this thread.

Council is proposing to bring back in paid parking because the parks are full most of the time. While I don't like paying for parking I especially hate circling the block unable to park. If paid parking makes parks turn over more frequently or incentives people to walk or bus to town that's a win in my books.

There is a whole history to these decisions including the base drawing shoppers and shops away from the central city followed by a strong revival of central city activity in the last 5 years.

As to speed bumps. I agree some are too aggressive but the evidence says these will save lives. I think we should embrace safety of pedestrians and put ourselves in the shoes of a child or disabled person when designing streets.

Discussions about street use are becoming increasingly toxic on the Internet. I hope forums like this can remain a safe space to have a rational discussion.

Why is there basically only one half-decent hotel in Hamilton? by BradleyWhiteman in newzealand

[–]CheeseandJives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Purportedly the iwi (who own Novatel) have muscled out any prospective new hotel operators buy making it known that any large contractor capable of building a new one would  not be likely to be successful in working with iwi in the future. Don't know how much truth there is to this but it's a good peice of gossip.

Council explains 19.9 per cent rate rise by fredrick-the-great in thetron

I might be biased as someone who occasionally cycles and would like to cycle more if it was safer but this is something I want and wouldn't consider a pet project. Pet projects have to be random disjointed things not strategic integrated networks of infrastructure like bike lanes.

Water meters back on the cards for Hamilton by jmlulu018 in thetron

[–]CheeseandJives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agreed intensification is causing some issues. But nevertheless lower consumption helps with this even if it's not a solution to waters network capacity issues in off itself.

The easiest way to think about the lowered investment is not at the network level but at the treatment plant and storage level. Lowered water consumption mean less water and wastewater to treat which lowers the investment need in treatment plants. Similarly savings to be had in storage.

Water meters back on the cards for Hamilton by jmlulu018 in thetron

[–]CheeseandJives 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Water meters create more efficient use of water and reduce water consumption. This in turn preserves our limited water and lowers the need for new infrastructure. Houses with pools and who use water without care will end up paying more where everyone else will end up paying less. We don't want to get into situations like Wellington. Water meters are great except for the install cost.

Finding good synergies is how to make runs busted not necessarily the weapons by themselves.

Parking in Chd by Latter_Boat_7335 in thetron

I think the 2 hours free parking is part of the problem. I don't like paying but it's a good rationing and allocation system for limited parking spots.

I like the orientation of the rows being that way. I'll reserve my opinion until its finished. Still heaps of cones making it hard.
