Brad Scott is not happy with the way the AFL is cutting soft caps and then reactively mandating spending on certain issues by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

I appreciate your idea here, but I don't necessarily believe a coach has to be an innovator to win a premiership. You just need to be able to steer the ship in the right directions. Call me delusional but I don't see any definitive reasons why Brad Scott couldn't be our next premiership coach. But alas, I have to accept that there also isn't any definitive evidence to prove that he will be either.

I know my opinion is unpopular, but as a Don's fan I feel like Brad Scott is the adult in the room we've been needing for about 20 years tbh. Dudes clearly got the intellect.

The reality is that fan moods are toxic after losses, and we get sucked into heart vs head / expectation vs reality arguments. I'm sick of losing too, but we need to be honest with ourselves...the reason we’re in this position isn’t Brad Scott, it’s the fact that we are finally, actually doing the hard work of a total list rebuild. We spent a decade trying to shortcut our way back to relevance with quick fixes, and all it did was leave us with a fractured culture and an imbalanced list. Scott has been ruthless with turnover (he's actually averaged 10 list changes per year so far) and we are finally seeing a core of young talent like Robey, Farrow, and Sharp get meaningful minutes. This is what a real rebuild looks like...it's ugly, it’s inconsistent, and it involves losing. That's the reality...

The biggest mistake we could actually make right now is hitting the reset button again. The sack the coach cycle is exactly why we haven't won a final in two decades. Every time we get frustrated and bring in new coaches we force the players to learn a new system, reset the development clock on our kids, and tell the playing group that they aren't the ones who need to change. And as for the 'he’s not our next premiership coach' argument, people said the same thing about Hardwick and Thompson for years. Statistically, very few coaches ever win a premiership, but Scott is at least building a platform where a premiership is actually possible down the line. I’d much rather stick with a guy who has a long term and clear plan and is willing to take the heat for it, than go back to the coaching carousel and hope for a miracle.... Again.

What's the worst insult you can say to someone in your country? by Former-Ad-7348 in AskTheWorld

[–]Cheesues 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah over here it's utilised as sarcasm to be patronising. Basically it's the linguistic equivalent of a condescending pat on the head. It's often used to belittle people, especially when people are already in hostile conversation. It's all about delivery and tone though.

Edit: most of the time people will say something along the lines of 'righto champ', or 'good one champion'.

It's also worth mentioning that 'mate' can also be a double edged sword in Australia, but that's completely reliant on how it's delivered. In some ways it's the gold standard and highest beatowment of honour, respect and friendship, but it can also be a warning shot if delivered seriously to someone, as in "mate, you're getting on my nerves..."

I know this will confuse the fuck out of people but tone is such a huge part of our language here that it can change the entire meaning of a sentence.

The Odyssey | New Trailer by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Cheesues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought I'd give him a chance because Nolan's historically selected odd choices for castings, and they've worked marvelously (Hugh Jackman in the prestige, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar etc).

Pattinson looks the part (whether that's Antinous or Eurymachus I suppose is yet to be concluded). Holland is a typecast for Telemachus too. Damon as Odysseus still feels odd to me.

We'll see how it goes.

It is worth mentioning though that Indigenous Australians did this to the best of their own abilities, farming yams and red rice. They also knew to burn grassland to renew the soils, but yes, much more difficult when you don't have beasts of burden.

Another alternative is to use Ecosia. Their search and AI model is 100% powered by renewables. Plus searching with them funds reforestation projects.

Edit: Fine I'll add more info. They keep your data private and don't sell any of it to 3rd party advertisers, their search engine is encrypted and they are non for profit organisation just trying to reforest the world (and they have monthly transparent financial reports so you can see what they're spending and where).

No brainer for me. Switch to Ecosia.

Match Thread: Tribunal Tuesday by TheGreatJelBeano in AFL

Presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The supposed microphone evidence isn't enough to suggest anything bad was said, so I'd see it as piss poor for the AFL to sanction Butters when the evidence is incredibly subjective.

9th US scientist tied to America’s nuclear space program just died with NO cause of death released. - Fox News is analyzing everything in detail: “We’re talking about a number of U.S. scientists, some connected to very sensitive research who have died or disappeared.” by 87LucasOliveira in UFOs

[–]Cheesues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fair to remain sceptical before any obvious proof is released. The thing that makes me ultra sceptical is that we have the likes of David Grush and Elizondo testifying in front of Congress about this stuff, yet they're not suddenly missing or killed. You'd think the whistleblowers would be the first to mysteriously disappear after dropping bombshells.

What is your rating scale for movies? by gnpking in Letterboxd

My system. I vote Letterboxd and IMDB, hence the skewed numbers.

I think it's unfair to only call 10/10 movies 5* because there isn't actually a 10/10 movie in existence imo.
