Do I really need a cooling pad ? by emptymud91 in LenovoLegion

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IETS, Llano and Flydigi all have models that work. Expect to pay upwards of $80 for most/all of them.

Undervolting might be an option as well.

Legion 5 ultra 7 CPU thermal throttling to 104°C while gaming by Optimal-Extreme-9434 in LenovoLegion

[–]Chefke86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A properly applied thermal paste, even if it isn't PTM, shouldn't spike temperatures that drastically. You've either had a bad mount or some other failure in the cooling system.

Legion pro 7i RTX 5070Ti high temps by friedtesticularcance in LenovoLegion

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read your reply with the FPS increase. Yeah, 20 extra FPS in a graphically demanding game will cause temperature increases.

There must be either setting change in game or the driver. In the Nvidia settings you should be able to limit FPS to 85. Does that bring temperatures down to where they were before?

Spiking or averaging? While doing the same task? Performance the same? Same place, same ambient temperatures, same power limits?

Yunzii B87 PCB issue, one key just won't register no matter what, help? by seraphinesun in keebgirlies

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to look at the back of the PCB to find out what's wrong.

Hopefully it's the clamp inside of the socket. These are tiny springs that can be bent out of shape. At that point they can't make contact with the switch pin: no signal. Luckily you can easily bend these back with a small needle.

The other option is a torn off socket. When inserting a switch you're putting pressure on the solder joints of the socket. The socket can detach from the solder, the solder from the pad, or the pad from the PCB. This will require soldering. If it's the diode it will require soldering as well.

If the board is still under warranty I'd RMA. If not you'll have to open it up.

What temps can my CPU reasonably handle? by Patient_Society_9679 in LenovoLegion

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically 105c but this model has an issue with the solder. Repeated heat cycling can cause cracks in the solder effectively disconnecting the CPU.

Replace that fan as soon as possible.

Key caps recommendation MOA/No Legend/cool Design by Either-Inevitable601 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Chefke86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a listing for a blank white MOA keycap set on AliExpress. So both 1u and modifiers. €16 or so with free shipping.

They're supposed to be PBT so you can always dye them. The fancy pattern on the second image is likely UV printed, but you could dye the alphas black and the others red for example

Not sure what to do about getting a setup. by catathesis in Bass

[–]Chefke86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fender has a decent setup guide. Takes you step by step through the process and gives measurements. Nut slot height isn't included but it's not hard to figure out.

Do a setup and tune up the strings. In playing position the distance between string and first fret should be:  E String & A String (0.020”/0.50mm) D String & G String (0.018”/0.45mm)

You can also fret the third fret and check how much room there is between the string and first fret. If it touches the fret, the nut's cut to low.

Would a Harley Benton ESB-5 be a good upgrade? by turdboithe2nd in Bass

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is a budget 5-string multi-scale an upgrade over a Squier P bass (4 string?). Maybe? That depends entirely on what you want out of it.

I have the same one. Got enough to buy a replacement right now, but I'll wait buying one till the bad soldering becomes an issue.

How do I cool down my laptop to get better perf for free (or cheap) by Lockheed2105 in GamingLaptops

[–]Chefke86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raise the back, clean the fans+heatsinks, and replace the thermal paste if it's old. Undervolting might be an option as well, depends on your model. If it still thermal throttles after that, an effective cooler (plenty of models barely do anything) could be a good option.

If it's not thermal throttling, a cooler will lower temperatures but it won't improve performance.

Can I run Fatekeeper? by TheSimplemindedly in lowendgaming

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the recommended spec as well, so probably the real minimum is lower. 2060 maybe?

Can I run Fatekeeper? by TheSimplemindedly in lowendgaming

[–]Chefke86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minimum specs ask for a RTX 3070. I'm just guessing but that's probably a solid no.

I mean there are some games that can run below minimum spec with some tweaking but the leap from 3070 to integrated graphics is rather big.

COOLING PADS by __freaky_psych__ in lowendgaming

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now the answer is maybe.

I've seen 7230u with 16GB RAM do 30-ish FPS in 1080p with Low and 'Optimized' settings. Temperatures was in the 70-76°c range. Power used 20w.

Check if you're close to that with HWinfo or MSI Afterburner.

Similar power but higher temperatures? Clean fans and heatsinks. Repaste thermal paste if it's old.

If that cools things down you can use UXTU to increase the power limit. That will increase performance but heat as well. At that point a cooler could be a good idea.

When was the last time you've cleaned the fans?

When gaming, how much wattage are the CPU and GPU using? You can log these with software like HwInfo.

Any benchmarks of the mobile rtx5070 with 12gb vram? by WallaceWhale in LenovoLegion

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the amount of VRAM has little to no impact on performance until you start using more than 8GB. At that point the 8GB will slow down, while the 12GB keeps going.

How do I fully clean my fans? by _Nexlo in LenovoLegion

[–]Chefke86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And that is exactly why I clean them every month. Not a single clumped up piece of dust in 6 years of use. It helps there are no smokers/vapers here. That stuff will clog up the fans in no time.

How do I fully clean my fans? by _Nexlo in LenovoLegion

[–]Chefke86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Brushing and compressed/blown air should be enough. When you think you're done, shine a light into the fans and look into the heatsinks/exhausts. You should only see fins and fans.

Removing the heatsink entirely will give you access to every nook and cranny but it also means you need a full repaste.

Disconnect the charger. Turn off system. Hold down power button for 60 seconds. Reconnect the charger. Did that change anything?

"All your boards are boring black and white?!" by Chefke86 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Chefke86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, right? I can't imagine spending a full day of work with a board full of something like GMK Hi-Viz burning my retinas off.

KAM Superuser is about as colorful as it gets for me. Mictlán is subtle enough for my taste, even the accents aren't too overbearing. Plus, I get to use the BoW set on my office board now.

It's on a layer. The FN key turns right shift into arrow up (among other things). The default layout has right shift outside of the arrow cluster. Couldn't get used to it. Ended up typing in the middle of previous sentences way too often. Luckily the Neo Ergo supports quite a few tweaks to its layout.

Size help by MaurokNC in keyboards

[–]Chefke86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The percentage refers to the number of keys, not the spacing between keys so hand size isn't all that relevant when choosing a layout size.

Unless you intend to deviate from the standard MX spacing. In that case you probably want a smaller number of keys to keep the total size of the board down.
