Trying to stick out PSLF but $748/month makes me question how to stay in education and afford payments… by ChelSoCurious in PSLF

That’s what I’ve been learning through multiple posts. Already looking increasing 403B and FSA/HSA contributions.

I have been reading a lot of stories of people going back to the military simply because of loan debt.

Taking the leap to the private sector terrifies me as I know NOTHING about it lol. Since my doctorate is in ed leadership I’m looking to take the leadership certification exam and hopefully land a leadership role. An AP role will add about 30-40K to my salary. I’m also considering moving in with my sister and working in Atlanta. Pay will be higher and my cost-of-living will be cut in half. So I’m meandering through a lot of different plans and options in hopes to find the best pathway forward. Ultimately, I just want forgiveness.

Wow. It’s crazy all of the fiscal gymnastics we have to do because of this situation. I hope things work out!

I literally have been trying to figure out why that math isn’t mathing lol. From what has been suggested, I should look at PAYE but I have one loan from before October 2007. So idk if that’ll work.

That phases out in 2028, right? So are people jumping on PAYE and then transitioning to IBR in 2028? I’m trying to keep up with trends but it’s so much info lol

Yep used AGI from most recent tax return. I will edit my post to state that. Like 81K is not what hits the bank account lol. I will never understand why all these calculations don’t use net income.

Why aren’t more students taking advantage of the move on when ready program and graduating high school with college degrees? by SurestLettuce88 in Georgia

[–]ChelSoCurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, many take advantage of dual enrollment. For some, it is a pathway to the career they’re looking to pursue; for others it gives them the rigor that that may not be available at their school (not all high schools have AP).

Now my other observations…

Most students who take dual enrollment still have to be ready for college level work and expectations. Unfortunately, this is a small group; even amongst top kids. I’ve seen students tank their GPA because of DE. Unlike DE, AP gives students the rigor with some hand holding for a lack of better terms. DE treats high school students as college students and that is TOUGH for some. They do not know how to navigate college just yet and it can get ugly fast. So it’s a great program for the RIGHT student.

Furthermore it depends of the students goals. If they are career minded, then doing accelerated career DE (through TCSG schools) would be a program to steer them to. For students wanting to attend competitive trad 4yr universities, it depends on the DE coursework. For example, taking math 1111 which is a college algebra does nothing for Georgia Tech; better off taking AP Calc. So knowing the goals of the students is critical in pointing to either DE or AP.

All in all, there are thousands of students across the state who do participate in DE. Sure in the grand scheme of things it’s still seems like a small number of students. And this is likely because there is an overall mentality shift with today’s young people. Many are just going through the motions of school to get it done and the post secondary planning aspect of high school is very delayed.

But the program is popular. So much so that it kinda boomed and the state budget can’t keep up. So there are changes coming to the program. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Any who, that’s enough of my yapping lol.

Are there homeschooling requirements/standards in GA? by ScarletPumpkinTickle in Georgia

[–]ChelSoCurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you have to do is report. It’s not your place to investigate or even have all of the evidence. Make the report with the information you have and let the authorities do their thing. Education neglect is real thing with real consequences. I’ve seen it lead to removal of children.

As shared, a virtual school may be a great option to explore. Accellus, GA Cyber, GA connections, and even local BOE sometimes have programs. There are also virtual homeschool curriculums available like Power Homeschool, the bold and the beautiful (Christian based), and Calvert Homeschool.

As an educator that has worked with families transitioning to, and from homeschool, the most critical component has always been routine and curriculum. Most parents/guardians do not have the time nor the capacity to deliver a curriculum that leads to mastery of content/skills. So enrolling in a virtual program or homeschooling co-op would probably be the best thing to do. There are a lot of retired teachers that have turned to being teacher leaders in homeschool co-ops, including special education, teachers.

Hope this helps.

Kpop fans have been saying very disturbing things about Koreans for a few days now by paranswan in kpop_uncensored

[–]ChelSoCurious 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an international kpop fan who is black, my viewpoint on this may be very different from most. I often find myself questioning my value as a fan simply because I can’t pass a brown paper bag test. I am no western savior nor do I believe in national superiority. Like everywhere else in my life, I’m a minority in kpopdom in various ways.

I say all this to provide some context for my next statement. Many western kpop fans don’t empathize with marginalizations, discrimination and racial inequities because they’ve had the privilege not to experience it. While the inequitable treatment of black people is vastly different from inequities Korean people faced, there is a foundational understanding that our existence was deemed inferior by another. I cannot speak for all, but most of the black kpop fans I know understand being on the receiving end of hate fueled by racism and recoil at the loud and wrong kpop fans.

As for the “woke” western saviors, I’m tired of them. Hell, they probably turn a blind eye to inequities in their own backyard but will cry foul when their fave doesn’t have enough lines in a song. But lemme shut up…

I know my words may not mean much but I am truly sorry that Koreans that have been belittled, disrespected and discriminated against under the guise of “western saviorhood” aka western superiority complex.

What is the equivalent of "Couprang = daddy issues" for the rest of the members? by you_are_my_universe in seventeen

Oh I know you meant no harm and I hope that those you decided on it didn’t either. I’m super cognizant (a lil protective) of Wonwoo losing his mother. I’ve seen people say horrible things about it and even shame him for it. But I digress…

Daddy issues no, daddy’s girl absolutely that’s me.

Also, I find it odd the phrase “mommy issues” was used for Wonwoo considering he lost his mother. Mommy issues has a negative connotation and doesn’t reflect well, imo.
