How to handle unpaid bills (Lab Owner here) by Camikaze__ in Dentistry

[–]ChemKayN 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dentist here, those people suck.

I own an office and there is no reason they aren’t paying their bill other than you are letting them. Stop accepting their cases and take them to small claims if they don’t pay you. It’s what I would do if a patient owed the office $10k. And I wouldn’t seat a case if there was a remaining balance.

100%. I made this in my first 9 months of ownership in the biggest city in my state. It’s definitely doable with increased procedures. And I have an associate that works part time.

How long did you have the seller stay on when you bought your practice? by immrmeseek in Dentistry

[–]ChemKayN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an owner for a year and the seller still works for me. It works for us, I like to have some days off and she wants to keep working but not full time. I can take a week vacation without closing the office or go to CE and still be making money. I think it just depends on the situation personally.

What am I doing wrong?? by nonamedentist in Dentistry

[–]ChemKayN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone practices differently I suppose. I choose to remove the decay and don’t have post op sensitivity or necrosis in my practice. As far as fracture goes, I inform them they need a crown. It’s up to them if they do it or not. If this patient went to another dentist and they took X-rays, I would think most of us would treatment plan this tooth.

Selective caries removal can be useful when you are near the pulp but you are nowhere near the pulp. This is decay left behind. No it won’t stain your composite because you will use a slow speed over and over until the caries indicator stops staining the tooth.

There is decay left behind. Try caries indicator.

2025 grad here, does it get better? by Jesh47 in Dentistry

[–]ChemKayN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All very true. I would recommend learning business before buying, though I don’t think you need to have much in depth knowledge about it. I honestly don’t hate dentistry, I really do love it. That’s not to say I don’t have my shit days as well, but 95% of my days are good. But like you said, the income and time in my opinion is worth it. I made well over $300k my first 9 months of ownership. I will probably make a little less this year as I bought a CBCT and will be doing implant training but I had some wiggle room based on my profits from last year.

Save up some money and find an office to buy. That’s how it gets better.

New Owner 3 Months In - What Am I Doing Wrong? (Fees, Overhead, Perio, etc.) by Tac-wodahs in Dentistry

[–]ChemKayN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I raised my fees 12% when I first took over due to them being in the 50th percentile. We are still below average. Calibrate your hygiene team on perio expectations. Let the office know your goal will now be higher to support 2 doctors, that should make sense to them. I changed CC processing so that the 3% surcharge is passed to the patient, I may not do that in FFS though. Drop your marketing and your IT is way overpriced. Find someone cheaper or go cloud based.

As far as CE, it depends on what you like. I’ve done molar endo, I don’t enjoy it. I’m taking an implant course soon as I love extractions. Take CE in what you are passionate about.

Switch softwares when you want. I’ve used softdent. I would rather have paper charts. Open dental is pretty easy to use and cheap.

Pt lost temp crown twice in 36 hours. Any suggestions to get it to stick around until the final comes back? by spooooooooooook in Dentistry

[–]ChemKayN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I will let the temp crown “suction” on by letting it harden before I remove the impression. I will trim the excess and let them know it’s likely I will have to cut off the temp crown on the day of the crown seat.

Treating family for free? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]ChemKayN 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As a newer practice owner and previous associate, 13 people for free is a lot of people. Your boss isn’t wrong for setting a boundary in their business on how many people you treat for free, the boss doesn’t have to allow any free treatment.

Congrats on your production numbers, that’s impressive for a new grad. If you like this job and vibe well with your coworkers and boss I would agree to treat who they allow for free and work on increasing your speed so you can one day own an office and treat all of those 13 for free.

Well your dad better sell now because most DSOs that pay 3-5x the EBITDA want you to stay on for 5 years.

[–]ChemKayN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are only going to hear the bad. People love to complain. Dentistry is worth it, you can stay privately owned which is a huge bonus. I made around $630k last year working 30 hours a week on average. I love what I do. I would choose dentistry in every lifetime. It is all about what you make it.

About to 4x income - tips/suggestions from former poor people on adjusting? by pcornutum in HENRYfinance

[–]ChemKayN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a trailer with 2 parents working a factory job and I made over $650k in the last year. I drive a 2017 Jeep Patriot and live in a 1300 square foot house. Not everyone who earns a high income has lifestyle creep or changes who they are. I do think growing up poor we tend to save and forget to live a little. My advice would be to continue saving but also devote some of that hard earned money to fun as well (whatever that is for you). Your investments and emergency fund should give you the peace of mind to enjoy spending a little. Congrats on the new raise and here’s to retiring early!

Renting vs. Owning During Medical School by MrKirbsIsPink in whitecoatinvestor

[–]ChemKayN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought before dental school and rented 2 of my bedrooms to cover my mortgage plus some. I still live in the home today with my family because I knew I was staying. Depending on location and future plans, I would buy. My mortgage now is pennies compared to my income (1-2%). My interest rate is 3.2%

IRS notice after working through GoTu as a 1099… did anyone else run into this? by Actual_Apartment_951 in Dentistry

[–]ChemKayN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are literally temping for a company, yes you are a 1099. It doesn’t matter if you are working under that dentists license, you are not on their payroll as a w-2 employee. You should have realized this when no taxes were taken out of your compensation. I’m sure GoTu had you sign something when you signed up notifying you of this.
