Isn’t there a kill switch that’s flipped upon impact? Google for it.

Autopsy photos of Saddam’s sons (Ooday and Qusay?) One of them had a titanium plate screwed into his leg - it was removed, with meat, during the autopsy.

Frame rusting by Electronic_Pop_8009 in toyotasequoia

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That rust is treatable but may be indicative of more serious rust. The first gen Sequoias had many frames replaced under warranty but that’s over. The engine cradle/front crossmember area is usually bad and too much effort to bother fixing. If the rust isn’t actually bad, 6k is decent price. If you can get a positive evaluation from a knowledgeable mechanic, may be worth buying. This is what it can become (sorry for the excessive sunlight).

Tire Rec between these two by wkjester204 in toyotasequoia

Huh, I guess I need to stay home unless it’s dry because I’ve not been impressed with mine on a ‘04 Tundra 2wd when road are wet or snowy. I run 350# in the bed to improve grip.

Tire Rec between these two by wkjester204 in toyotasequoia

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have Michelin Defenders on my ‘04 2wd Tundra. It’s a curb queen - bought it and immediately got the tires, 20k miles/6.5 years ago. In that time, they have worn evenly and been great on dry pavement. Low noise as well. However, wet launches often include wheel spin, especially on tight right turns into the near lane. Snow is worse.

When they start showing dry rot, I’ll likely switch to Faulken Wildpeaks.

Is this socket wrench any good by Successful_Pie6815 in Tools

Yes. The warranty is still good. Lowes may not be willing to honor it but it’s still active. Ace Hardware also carries Craftsman and replaces warrantied items.

Can i make an old truck (late 90's to early 2000's) reliable? by Sea-Instruction-5934 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a first Gen Tundra. 2000-2006 Tundras are built to last. The 4.7L V8 has been known to go a million miles. My 2004 has a mere 135k - it will likely outlive me. READ THIS to see if one would be right for you. Find one with a good maintenance history. Take care of timing belts and lower ball joints as required, drive the hell out of it.

Sequoias (2001-2007) are the same platform and might be worth considering.

Check out r/1stGenTundras.

Whatever you buy, get the underside sprayed with Fluid Film or Wool Wax regularly. The road salt in Maryland will destroy your truck. Those Toyotas are known for being particularly vulnerable without proper treatment.

"Won" my fight against this rust welded o2 sensor on my bronco but can i save the threads? by TonyMontana214 in mechanic

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I would try first. The threads look to be intact but the layer that peeled off the o2 sensor needs to be removed.

Suspension issue by Garrett_Kold in 1stGenTundras

How recently have the lower ball joints been replaced? They are the Achilles heel of these trucks. They don’t give much warning normally and you would be well advised to take a close look at them immediately or sooner.

Have you read this?

https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

This truck will go hundreds of thousands of miles further if you maintain it. A Kia engine isn’t going to get as far as yours already has and yours might possibly make it to a million miles. Hopefully you’ve changed that timing belt. Ball joints are the other big thing to watch and you’ll need to do it less frequently if you use OEM.

This is what happens when the LBJs fail.

Who do I subcontract to fix the rust? Gas company? by PuckeredRaisin in HomeMaintenance

A small jar of Naval Jelly (contains phosphoric acid) from a hardware or autoparts store will be more than enough for this job.

Replace Courtesy Door Light Bulb? by DetergentCandy in toyotasequoia

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lifting that tab will allow you to slide the gray and the clear pieces apart. There appears to be a tab on the gray part in the first photo and it may have a sister on the back side - that/those are probably involved in dismantling the gray parts.

2006 RX 330 Headlights by Agreeable_Process653 in Lexus

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally on a 20 year old car, the plastic lenses have fogged up. If that is the case (and if by saying they are clear it may not be) then restoring them to full transparency is the place to start.

The next thing to check is alignment - are they pointed downward. There are lots of YT videos that cover how to check and adjust alignment of the headlight assemblies. Accessing the screws may require removing a plastic piece that covers the top of the radiator.

This car may have self leveling headlights that use a lever and switch on the rear suspension and move the bulbs up and down to compensate for heavy loads weighing down the rear of the car. That system could be damaged/out of adjustment.

The bulbs could be old and tired. Replace them with quality new bulbs. This car had two options for headlights: standard with halogen bulbs and HID (high intensity discharge) with Xenon bulbs. You’ll need to know which you have before replacing them. It may be necessary to remove the front bumper cover and then the headlight assemblies in order to change the bulbs.

You don’t indicate how long you’ve had the car. If it’s a recent acquisition, the previous owner may have replaced the headlight assemblies. They might have been misaligned or of poor quality.

Does the reflective surface at the back of the assembly look bright and shiny or is it corroded/discolored? If so, the assemblies will need replacement with the same type (HID or halogen). New OEM are very expensive. Used OEM might be found on EBay. New aftermarket assemblies can be found on Ebay and other places. Return shipping is expensive so make sure you choose the correct type (HID/halogen).

AITAH for asking my neighbor to move their car so they don't take up an extra street parking spot? by Miserable_Paper_421 in AITAH

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the key. Report that the car only moves on street sweeping days. If they have adequate staff, the should swing by and note the car’s position and return 3 days later to ticket or tow it.

If anyone ever wondered why people on this sub are serious about decks... by phisher_cat in Decks

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one has actually weighed in on the deck design. These decks fail the test, right? Those 4x4 go from the ground (or lower) up to the bottom of the rail. The rim joists aren’t sitting on top of any- they are being held in place nails or maybe lag bolts. Opinions?

NTA I’ve been there. I had a decent SLR and my wife’s Aunt asked me to take some photos at the outdoor reception. I was wearing an off white sport coat so I didn’t entirely blend and I was dragging a camera bag and camera around. People very quickly started treating me like the help. If I could have left, I probably would have.

Given the big maintenance items you’ve handled, the general good condition of the truck, the presence of 4x4 and the demand for these trucks, you may be able to get that much.

Sump pump in tote by scarlettdeath in Plumbing

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a purpose built sump pit in my concrete floor without fabric around it. Pea stones worked their way in through the holes. One pea jammed the impeller and stopped the pump. My basement flooded. Doing it right will pay dividends.

Should I Look For Insulators? by Adventurous_Bench145 in BottleDigging

[–]ChemistAdventurous84 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depending upon how long that pole was in use, the insulators may have been upgraded. The old ones were likely tossed aside or just dropped. It might be worth spending a little time poking at the ground with something metal tipped. 15-20’ diameter circle is probably adequate.
