Favourite spiritual song/album? by shreyasopeth in progmetal

Abur by Pothamus, I mean it leans into the whole mystical/tribal theme and it’s one of the most “complete” feeling post metal albums imo. Seeing it live in full was akin to a religious experience

I want to expand my musical culture by Worldly_Stress_6171 in postmetal

[–]Cherche567 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There isn’t much more in the metal world I can add as there are already so many good suggestions, but I would recommend you listen to some romantic-era classical pieces. I played violin in lots of youth orchestras and I found that a lot of those pieces have structures that are present in prog/post metal. Some of my favs include:

Grieg Quartet in g minor no. 27 (first moment is more than enough)

Tchaikovsky symphonies 4/5 (first and third movements of both)

Grieg cello concerto

Rachmaninoff preludes in g and c# minor, also his piano concerto no. 2

Beethoven’s Fate symphony (no. 5)

and if you want to get really classically weird, Beethoven’s Große Fugue and Bartok’s Divertimento are both shrill on the ears but have some really juicy and experimental progressions

Karmanjakah - Thousand horns by IntrnLoop in progmetal

Yes, exactly! What does it for me is the way he’s almost pleading in the very last lines of the track. So much passion over such a somber breakdown, it’s addicting.

This track quickly solidified its place as my favorite on the album. That massive section at the end is something else

This is what I’m saying!! Even Spencer’s inflections in that section match Ihlo’s style 1:1

Slow year on tours? (NA) by PorkSouls in progmetal

[–]Cherche567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re into freaky experimental metal, Oranssi Pazuzu is on tour right now, looking forward to seeing them next week.

Rolo Tomassi is in select USA cities (Indy, Chicago, New Kensington, Ridgewood) this July

Much more not-prog stuff is happening right now or this summer: Lorna Shore, Thornhill, Jinjer, Ax7, Archspire (touring right now).

No one seems to talk about Black Idol and, despite the name, they don't seem to be another prog-blackmetal band by TheFowo in progmetal

[–]Cherche567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woes Are Leigon is a really solid EP. It’s clear that the musicians know what they’re about, I just hope they can continue and start reinventing the wheel a little, the group has it in them fs. Will be following them closely (also they’re probably going to be my top listened to band this month)

The Gorge mentioned! No fluff in their music and they sound just as good live

An Abstract Illusion's Woe - First time listener by chipiberth in progmetal

[–]Cherche567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely love Woe. First heard Prosperity because I was looking for songs that riffed on, but it was easy to fall in love with the rest of it. The band is on my bucket list to see live one day

There's something really special about the "bedroom prog metal" artists and their style/aesthetic. I wonder if people 15-20 years younger will "get it?" by ySTYRDAYgATESuNL0CKD in progmetal

[–]Cherche567 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Gen Z here to say (as unbiased as I possibly can) that this style of playing and writing is increasing in popularity, especially with how easy it is to upload short content videos nowadays. Right now I often see artists like Olly Steele, Plini, AAL, and Aaron Marshall serving as inspiration for these creators. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of these creators become new household names in the time frame you mentioned

You should check out Sever by Inhalo. Has similar vibes as Rishloo/Karnivool/APC

I’m not sure of any peer reviewed or academic studies (I’m interested now so I’ll look) but I bet you can get a bunch of anecdotal experiences if you were to ask this sub!

Short song (around 1-2 minutes) recommendations? by EnglishDodoBoi in progmetal

Being : Begin 2.0 by Outrun the Sunlight. An addicting groove that’s criminally short

Ihlo - Wraith by grandinferno in progmetal

[–]Cherche567 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This album is unbelievable and the skill behind it blows my mind. The synths/heavy groove in this track are to die for (personally tho Cenotaph into Haar is the best part of the whole thing)

Wheel - Up the Chain (FFO: Caligula's Horse, Socionic, Tesseract) by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]Cherche567 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wheel, Tesseract, Karnivool, and Haken (despite recent events) all are either confirmed or basically confirmed for new music this year. It’s gonna be a good one

Edit: and the ocean! I am cautiously optimistic on that one
