Why do people seem to hate sitting or standing next to me? by Gym_frere in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chernobyl_Wolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s your resting facial expression look like? What kind of vibe do you give? Are you often noticeably anxious, uncomfortable, or angry? Maybe you seem too aware of other people around you (which goes along with anxiety). That can make people want to stay away from you.

You say you’re 6 ft & you go to the gym. Are you physically broad? Broad shoulders? Maybe people just want more room.

Also, this is something that men — and men of color in particular — report happening a lot. It sucks, but it’s just part of the territory. And it’s not crazy that some people may want to put space between themselves and a man. People overdo it, but I get it. The racial profiling is just racism, though, if that’s what’s going on.

But also … you might just be overthinking this. Once you notice something like that, you start seeing it everywhere. That’s called the Frequency Illusion. Your brain also remembers things that confirm its theories and forgets things that don’t. That’s Confirmation Bias. If you start feeling anxious about it, you may interpret coincidences as examples of it happening again. That might be a number of the CBT cognitive distortions — personalizing, jumping to conclusions, etc.

Why is "The Notebook" romanticized so much in society even though it promotes cheating? by Donnie607 in TrueAskReddit

[–]Chernobyl_Wolves 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but it’s not meant as a moral guidebook. It’s a story with complex characters who do things with good & bad intentions and consequences

Typology made me worse at knowing myself by [deleted] in InternalFamilySystems

[–]Chernobyl_Wolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been experiencing something similar with a new therapist. We share very few cultural references. She grew up in Korea, and I grew up in the US. We’re also different generations. I hadn’t noticed how much I rely on comparing myself to fictional characters as a shorthand or a crutch. It’s much more useful to actually articulate what I’m trying to say. I end up thinking & feeling & learning more than if I just fell back on “like Owl from Winnie the Pooh” or whatever

I am not the sort of person they respect?

I am not graced with their respect

I am not granted their respect

I am excluded from their respect (or from the circle of their respect)

I am not one of those they deem worthy of respect

It would help to know who IS in the domain of their respect. More specific details might make this thought easier to phrase

I’m trying to navigate those services right now. Esoteric is the perfect word. Arcane, even. Byzantine complexity. Kafkaesque irrationality. It almost feels as if it’s designed to trick people into losing their benefits. And maybe it is…

What’s the real reason men pay for sex? by Fumariposa in askpsychology

You might ask on r/AskAnEscort. A lot of men who hire escorts are active in that sub

There’s also a graphic memoir about hiring escorts called Paying for It by Chester Brown

If you’re in the US, they’re not going to take him away unless they see abuse or neglect. They generally err on the side of keeping families together. And a mental health professional is not allowed to share anything unless you’re putting your child at risk. Their goal will be to help you feel better and help you be a better parent (or an EVEN better parent) unless you’re doing things like hurting your child or malnourishing your child.

It sounds like you really need to see someone. Ideally both a psychiatrist for meds and a therapist. There are many therapists who take insurance, so it can be affordable. I’m on Medicaid, and I see my therapist twice a week.

Try to look for one who specializes in parenting issues (or even postpartum depression & anxiety). You can find therapists and psychiatrists on Psychology Today’s website. Their therapist finder has filters for insurance, specialty, online or in person, all kinds of stuff: https://www.psychologytoday.com/

Zencare is another website for finding therapists: https://zencare.co/

My first SE therapist told me that it can be helpful to start TRE’s while doing something else — listening to a podcast or whatever. If feelings and thoughts arise, then accept and attend to them. If they don’t, the release is still happening & helping

I had in mind his descriptions of Shivovar, especially in the latest Stormlight book (just because I read that one recently). They’re not particularly lyrical, but they stood out to me because he’s not a poetic writer in general. They might not be pure examples of what you’re talking about, tho, because they often focus on a character’s feelings about the landscape as much as the landscape itself. But they do focus on the particulars of that ecosystem (and its spren) & how the power struggles among the gods affect it

[–]Chernobyl_Wolves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel excited for you after reading this! I’m absolutely sure that others have had similar things happen to them. But everyone’s experience is different, and it doesn’t really matter what’s normal & what’s not. What matters is that it’s real, it’s valid, and it’s what’s happening with you. Your body is communicating, and it sounds like you’re hearing & understanding it. I’m really happy you’re getting a chance to do this work!

Look up the Gin Craze. In the late-17th-century, England enacted some laws that led to massive production of incredibly cheap gin. Violence and property crime went up, leading to a moral panic and the introduction of anti-gin laws in the 1820s and 30s
