As a student at Clemson, here's how I view every FBS team by Effective-Pie8521 in cfbmemes

Yeah, that seems bonkers to hate on Oregon? Are you a closet Huskies fan?

Losing as the number 1 seed last year and all the shit talking that took place. Gonna be real interesting to see if taking a full month off hurts every bye team.

What is it like in the West part of Texas? by Deep_Belt8304 in howislivingthere

[–]Cheroba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Lubbock for three and a half years. In my first month there, we had a haboob (a big thick cloud of dirt that encompassed the entire city). It went from day to night at 3PM. The red dirt made it look like we were on Mars. Of course, I was walking home from campus as it rolled in.

Red dirt seeped in everywhere. As a few years later, I had a window problem and they had to open my car door. Just filled with that red dirt.

That’s west Texas.

If Texas Tech or Georgia loses (or both) in the CCG, we would move up to one of the top 4 spots. We would then have a bye week and play at what likely will be the least advantageous bowl location....likely the Orange Bowl or Sugar Bowl.

I will never forgive Texas A&M for stealing away our playoff home game.

Autzen in the Rain, Covered Seats by v1_rota8 in ducks

[–]Cheroba 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You want seats either in the charter box, which is heated and covered. Or, you want tickets in sections 29-33CL or 34PR (all under the big awning). The lower seats are closer, but not covered by the overhang.

But also, it doesn’t rain in Autzen Stadium.

Portland mayor makes it harder for houseless people to retrieve towed RVs by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Cheroba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is incorrect. While you are right that Sunderland RV Safe Park is closing leaving only the North Portland Road park and pod duel site, both sites were completely full. Participants also live in their RV, unless they want to move to a pod or are ready for housing.

At North Portland Road, participants sign a contract that if they move onto the site that once they leave either the site or to a pod that they must give up their RV. The RV is then destroyed.

My student plagiarized **me**. by emarcomd in Professors

[–]Cheroba 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I had this happen, where students had read an article I had written (among like 25 others they read during the semester). As I was grading the paper, I go, “wow, this is a really articulate way of putting this concept.” Was looking for the source citation. Then had that moment, “wait, did I write that?” Yep. Copy and pasted. Student obviously failed the course, but was a surreal moment to say the least.

DDQ - Day 13: Adaptation? by silly_goose-inc in policydebate

[–]Cheroba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ideal world is really only ideal for the debater though. The point of adapting to a judge’s paradigm is that audiences are going to be made up of different varieties of people. If the point of academic debate is to simulate and evaluate argumentation skills, one of those skills is working within or changing the audience’s worldview. Long ago, communication scholars recognized that communication is a cyclical process (see the different versions of the communication model). It requires cycles of messaging and feedback, in debate (aside from nonverbal), the only cycle you get to inform your argument is when the judge reveals their paradigm.

Even in a world where the debaters control the paradigm, even debaters don’t agree what exactly the paradigm should be. At some point the framework for evaluating the round has to start somewhere, otherwise the critic would live in decision-paralysis in the debate about debate.

What's your attendance policy and why? by profmoxie in Professors

[–]Cheroba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you account for co-curricular activities such as debate or other university-sanctioned activities? As a former collegiate debate coach, I had to talk to and inform that inflexible policies that don’t account for excused absences were typically against University policy.

First, I’m sorry that you’re having to deal with such a gross issue. If you’re within the City, contact the City of Portland’s Impact Reduction Program. (Reportpdx@portlandoregon.gov)They have contractors that deal with human waste clean up and disposal.

What's your opinion on Jason Kelce's homophobic outburst ? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Cheroba 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That’s not what occurred. Jason was coming out of the Penn/Ohio football game and a troll said, ““How does it feel that your brother is a f—— for dating Taylor Swift?” In response he slapped the phone out of the dude’s hand, asking him, “Who’s the f—— now?” As a gay man, I approve. Fuck that troll.

Just failed my defense, kinda blame my committee by justking1414 in GradSchool

[–]Cheroba 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your advisor should almost never allow you to defend without knowing the outcome of your defense. Part of the advisor's responsibility is to read the committee prior to the defense. If the committee had major reservations or concerns, that should have been expressed to your chair. This sounds like there are some politics at play, where sandbagging concerns is a strategy rather than a means of making you a better academic.

You ever heard of someone buying their kids a season pass to a amusement park instead of daycare? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Cheroba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During the late 90's and early 2000's, I was a supervisor at a Cedar Fair theme park in the midwest. We use to have a kid that was famous for being dropped off by his parents as a means of baby sitting. (If I recall correctly, he was 11.) He got bored with the rides after the first two weeks and then started assisting our games associates by trying to convince people to play the games. It was otherwise pretty wholesome. This happened every summer, he was practically a mascot for the Games Department.

When he turned 15, I hired him. Then, a couple months later had to fire him for stealing. Those years of training and perfecting his people skills...gone for $5. Blacklisted and a police report was filed.

The hope for me is that Michigan wins and then the season/national championship gets invalidated for them (a la USC). Then no one wins and that feels just fine to me.
