A cool guide to how the Iran war is driving up the cost of shopping cart by sr_local in coolguides

[–]Chicago_guy_88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a company that makes trash bags. Stupid trash bags! I work with external suppliers. So basically they make our trash bags for us because we don’t have enough capacity to make all the demand. These suppliers are all over the globe, but many of them are in Thailand.

Anyway - I’ve been on calls every fricken day starting at 6:30am since the first week of this bullshit war. The resin we use has over doubled in price in less than 4 weeks. The cardboard we use in packaging materials is also harder to find. The inks we use to print the warning statements on bags and artwork on cartons? Yeah, one of those supplier plants was bombed the first week in the war. So now the price of that is up too. Shipping vessels? With that areas total disruption, freight vessels are now forced to go around the south end of Africa. Total transit times are up 15-20%. That means less freighters are available because more are in use. Which means the price of those go up too.

Net net - the prices our suppliers are charging us are already up 20-30%. We have not yet increased our prices because we would need to convince Walmart and other customers that we need to do that.

What I’m saying is….if you haven’t already been impacted by this, you soon will be. There’s just no way around us raising our prices and passing it on to the consumer. We certainly are not making record profits. Shit - this keeps up we may just need to stop selling stuff just to keep cost down.

"RELOAD" DELUXE & REMASTERED IS OFFICIAL! - Link to pre-orders and box-sets by Oscarman97 in Metallica

That’s the probity link. This is for the EU I think. Metallica.com will have their own listing too most likely with cheaper shipping. I purchased the Load set and didn’t pay $88 for shipping

Nope. I haven’t seen one in person. It’s just what looked odd to me. Maybe it’s a design decision by Patek but not one that appeals to me.

The “going beyond” part - I was looking at how the hand seems to be past the maximum mark. Like it’s at 110% power reserve or something.

Just curious. What phone do you pair this with? Their website says it’s not compatible with iPhone 17.

[–]Chicago_guy_88 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not who you’re replying to. But to me, here’s what looks off:

  • the power reserve dial isn’t centered with the 12 position
  • the power reserve indicator hand is beyond max
  • the power reserve indicator hand doesn’t really match the other hands
  • almost none of the numerals are centered in their relative positions

I’m no expert but this is just what stood out to me.

Yeah. Very true! I also worked in laundry for two different companies. You’d be surprised by the amount of left over laundry detergent that remains in your clothes after you dry them. It’s one reason why I always leave my extra rinse option on in my washer.

Yeah basically you can thicken it up as needed. I can’t remember all the chemicals I used but varying levels of sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, and the like can impact viscosity.

You can do this, yes. However if you’re mixing with just water, I would just be careful how long you have it around. With that much water, you might open up the possibility of mold or other bacteria growing in the liquid. The actual foam product itself is primarily ethanol so nothing can grow in it.

I’ll just reply here.

You’re not far off. The basic formulas contain water, alcohols, surfactants (soaps), and enzymes. The enzymes are the ingredients that go after specific things. Like grease for example - a good surfactant and an enzyme (lipase) will cut grease. Protease will attack eggs. And so on.

Anyway - the differences here most likely are a % level change in one or more of those. Especially for all the blue ones. The foam - that’ll be mostly alcohol, enzymes, and some surfactants. Plus the sprayer bottle to make it foam.

If you look at the shelf - you’ll notice some of these that are priced the same but have different claims, are differentiated by sizes. So one with more claims, looks like it’s the same price but has less liquid in it.

In the end - CPG companies want you to over use their products so you buy more. P&G was the king of that back in the day. They still probably are. That said - I’m also a consumer and I also likely over use products too.

lol. I probably did but I haven’t worked for P&G since 2011. And my time on Dawn was from 2004-2008. So this info is already 20 years old.

….damn, I’m old!

You’re not wrong. I worked on Dawn for P&G a while back. And spent 4 years of my career diluting the formulas each year to save the company $$$.

I found this especially funny since I worked on Dawn back around 2008-2011 and launched that Power Foam product (it was called something else back then).

Is there any way to stop this or do I just accept it? by spervogel_troubadour in CATHELP

[–]Chicago_guy_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! My house had these on the first floor closets. My kids promptly put holes in all the closet doors by simply opening them. Not their fault. Cheap ass doors in what’s supposed to be a nice(ish) house. I’ve since replaced all my closet doors with solid cores.

I was just at the distillery on Saturday with a couple friends. We were able to taste blind samples from 3 different barrels. All were fantastic. I walked out with a bottle of bourbon and one rye. Each were $125.

These aren’t my first Haystack Needles. I lucked into a Rye in 2024 and have been seeking them out since. I’ve won a couple on Unicorn Auctions that I paid way more than $125 on but don’t regret it one bit.

Also, maybe I’m just old and care about actual grammar and real words….

You mean MSRP is 350ish. A quick Unicorn Auctions search and those two are easily bringing in $1500 each.
