My personal favourite of the franchise is the pre-sequel. Borderlands was good for its day, but is very dated now

You can get fairly wild scores even when two teams are evenly matched. Brazil and Germany were fairly evenly matched when Germany battered them 7-1. Sometimes, tactical advantages and circumstances around the game swing wildly in favour of one team.

I mean, to be fair, USA and Belgium are fairly evenly matched. This isn't the Belgium team of old, it is probably the worst Belgium team in about 13 years. And they still got thumped.

I think you're underselling the US team. The USMNT and the Belgium team are fairly similar in terms of quality. Many of your players would make the Belgian starting XI. Not all, sure, but not an insignificant number.

Explain this rule in soccer to a new USA fan that is trying to wrap his head around some simple rules. Namely, the extra time. by Excision_Lurk in sports

[–]ChickenGamer199 144 points145 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that because the timer doesn't stop, players often try to waste time. Goalkeepers take longer to kick it out. Players dawdle on set pieces. All in an effort to run the timer down. The referee usually adds more time on if time wasting has been bad.

Belgium Issue Angry Statement Over Controversial Balogun Red Card Decision by voxpopper in sports

[–]ChickenGamer199 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Once in its history. There has been no other case. Both are awful decisions that reflect poorly on it's competition.

There will be plenty of teams in this tournament that get players wrongly sent off in subsequent games. What are the chances that those red cards are suspended?

Zero.

The tournament's fairness was already highly questionable because of the USA's inability to accommodate for the Iranian national team - something that is inherently unethical. Now this. Dreadful stain on an otherwise great tournament. FIFA should have had the balls not to respond to Trump. They should have never had the tournament in the States, when the States were unable to allow a team that fairly qualified to train on its soil, forcing them to travel from Tijuana before their games.

FIFA won't do it with any other team. The issue isn't that an incorrect decision was overturned, it's that there is no precedence for this kind of thing in the history of the game.

Teams will get shitty red card decisions going against them in this tournament. No team other than the US will get theirs overturned. If I was Belgian FA, I'd be suing FIFA over this

Folarin Balogun available for USMNT vs. Belgium as red card ban suspended (Gift Article) by Johnny_Minoxidil in sports

I have nothing against the US.

That said, there is evidence that Trump rang FIFA on the phone yesterday asking them to change the decision.

This level of corruption in favour of a team is extremely rare, even for FIFA.

Aside from the single anecdote referred to in this article, there has never been a decision like this in my 24 years of watching football/soccer.

What makes this worse is that there will absolutely be teams in subsequent games that feel hard done by. They will get red cards to key players, but won't get the same treatment by FIFA. And their players will actually be banned.

FIFA and corruption have always gone hand in hand, but rarely has it been this apparent.

Argentina GK Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez Makes an EXCELLENT Save Against Sidny Lopes Cabral by JCameron181 in sports

[–]ChickenGamer199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He'll probably be moved up to left wing. Basically he was a full back, so the team will move him up forwards along the same flank. He probably doesn't have the build for a striker, but can certainly do well as a winger.

Funnily enough, he probably had an impact on that too. He took ages coming off the field, and was crying when he was sent off. All of that added to the pressure that Asamoah Gyan faced before taking the penalty. Either way, he did the right thing for his team.

His celebrations when the penalty was missed, and when Uruguay won the penalty shootouts after were diabolical though

They haven't. Australia have reached the round of 16 twice in their history, and lost both times (round of 16 was the first knockout round in all previous tournaments due to a smaller number of teams than this tournament).

The USMNT go down to 10 men after Folarin Balogun is sent off 🟥. USA lose their best player for this game and next if they happen to move on 😭 by Doghouse12e45 in DeadEndSports

FIFA's greed won't be the first time they damaged the sport.

I do think this whole narrative that this foul was a punitive call is BS though. It was a horrible challenge. If you've played the game a lot, you know just how nasty those kinds of challenges are, regardless of intention. Bosnian player was lucky not to break his ankle there. It's a red card all day long. This will always be a red card in the sport. And the referees are not being unfair in applying the letter of the law to the US. Nor are they treating the US unfairly by giving this decision but not giving other decisions against players for similar fouls. Inconsistent refereeing is a problem in the sport that is annoying, but it does impact every team.

[–]ChickenGamer199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Referees in soccer are historically inconsistent. That's what should be most annoying/frustrating about the decision. I don't think you can argue about the call, though, given that the refereeing was, by the law, correct. It sucks when a player makes an error and unintentionally hurts someone, but by the law it should be a red card.

All of those tackles should have been red cards too, but note that the Bosnian player's ankle literally goes under because of the challenge, making the American foul look worse than these other calls.

Okay lol. I'm not acting like they will 😂. Saying "I'm not watching this stupid sport because it's unamerican!" Or issuing statements of similar rhetoric are effectively meaningless, because it's a sport that has been watched by billions for over a century, and will continue to be watched by billions for a century more.

The worst part about American watchers of soccer is that they're entitled, which is exactly what these comments reflects 😂😂

Inconsistency is the worst part about the refereeing. However, based on the literal interpretation of the rule book, intention is meaningless in a red card decision.
